Today's Front Pages: Headline
Writers Avoid Calling a Winner

Slate, by Josh Voorhees

Original Article

As we explained late last night pundits wasted little time scoring Wednesday's debate a clear cut win for Mitt Romney. But a quick scan of the morning's front pages shows that—fortunately for President Obama—the nation's headline writers and art team largely avoided specifics in the hours between when the debate ended and when Thursday's editions went to press. As you'll see there was the occasional talk of a "Romney doing well; Obama didn't err," but that type of punditry was largely relegated to subheads. A typical bold-faced headline, meanwhile, involved the two men "sparring," "clashing" or "debating."

Comments:
Well, duh.

Voorhees includes a sampling from some of the swing states to illustrate his point.

A bit earlier some were castigating Gov. Palin for predicting this.
Crow pie time!

"I mean, I — I had a friend who said, you don’t just pick the winners and losers; you pick the losers. All right? So — so this is not — this is not the kind of policy you want to have if you want to get America energy-secure."~~~~~~~~~
As good as it gets.

Which is when you KNOW Romney won decisively.

Axelrod and Matthews were on every channel trying to spin (lie) about the horrible performance from Obama.

Sarah Palin can see more clearly from Wasilla than the media talking heads can see from their glass towers.

Remember, Sarah was the one who saw the Obamacare 'death panels' coming and pushed for domestic energy revival and independence.

Unfortunate for Obama, people no longer look to the nation's newspapers for fact and opinion. It was already hashed, cussed, and discussed online last night and communicated before the West Coast was tucked in.

Reply 6 - Posted by: snowoutlaw, 10/4/2012 7:55:08 AM     (No. 8909098)

So what's so surprising about the LSM avoiding the facts? Did you expect them to become honest over night? The one thing the debates do is remove the lying media from the message, the media can't edit the live debate so Obma is on his own for once in his life and he failed as I would have expected.

Reply 7 - Posted by: cheese, 10/4/2012 7:57:24 AM     (No. 8909107)

Yes, the headline in our local online newspaper says "Obama, Romney Offer Nothing New in First Debate, U-W Eau Claire Students Say" (oh, yeah, let the students tell us what to think) and "Romney, Obama clash on Economy in First Debate". This is the paper that, when Governor Scott Walker decisively won the recall election, ran its top headline the morning after the election about money spent on refurbishing a local park. They were at home crying into their pillows, just like this morning.

#3, I'm not sure what Matthews was doing could be described as "spin." DA, yes -- it's openly his job. CM was in the midst of a near-breakdown, granted only more so than usual.

Reply 9 - Posted by: tnorling, 10/4/2012 8:22:58 AM     (No. 8909169)

Yea. I glanced at USA Today and I think it said something like "Romney light on economic details." And USA Today is light on facts and the truth. Not to put too fine a point on it - commie trash! It is unnerving though to see such partisanism from what purports to be an unbiased source.

Reply 10 - Posted by: Dthorny, 10/4/2012 8:23:21 AM     (No. 8909172)

ROMNEY WINS, ROMNEY WINS.

Romney knows economics, Obowma no show.

Romney leads, Obowma bleeds.

Romney the winner, Obowma the beginner

Romney is hailed while Obowma failed.

As of this moment Fox's web site still hasn't described it accurately, and it was worse at daybreak.

Reply 12 - Posted by: msjena, 10/4/2012 9:03:59 AM     (No. 8909284)

When Romney mentioned the "unelected board" of medical advisers, all I could think about were death panels. That's what they are. They will decide, for instance, that a hip replacement is too expensive for a 90 year old who isn't likely to live that long. Or worse, that cancer treatment is a waste for someone who is "too old." Romney correctly pointed out that his plan in Massachusetts didn't have anything like this. Sarah called it, just like she called it that that the media would cover for Obama's performance.

While giving the commencement address at the United States Coast Guard Academy, Vice President Joe Biden confused Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy with Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley. Why Did Lois Lerner

Among the criteria by which the Internal Revenue Service selected groups in for its political targeting program in 2012 was "educating on the constitution and bill of rights" (lowercase in original), according to the Inspector General´s Report. Lois Lerner, who directs the office at the center of that effort, has received her own education in the Constitution.(Snip)Josh Marshall, proprietor of TalkingPointsMemo.com, concedes that Lerner "has every right" to invoke the Fifth Amendment "and may be wise to do so. But that´s a decision that simply is not consistent with her remaining in her job.

CINCINNATI, OH - The claim that the ongoing IRS scandal is limited to low level employees is falling apart. The six Cincinnati workers we have identified, who sent scrutinizing letters to conservative groups with words including "patriot, liberty, tea party or 9-12" in their names are Mitchel Steele, Carly Young, Joseph Herr, Stephen Seok, Liz Hofacre and a woman identified only as Ms. Richards. (Snip) Because all six of our IRS workers have different individual and territory managers, Cindy Thomas is one manager they all have common.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.

There’s really no reason for the press to suggest that the recent slew of scandals involving the Obama administration — Benghazi, the AP phone-record seizure, the snooping in James Rosen’s e-mail, the IRS’s targeting of conservative groups, and so on — are a confusing jumble. There is a very clear thread running through all of the administration’s actions: The U.S. deputy chief of mission in Libya, Gregory Hicks, says that he was told not to speak to a member of Congress about Benghazi without a State Department lawyer present, that he received a phone call from Hillary Clinton’s
