Entertainment unions, groups
hail state film tax credit extension

Los Angeles Times, by Richard Verrier

Original Article

A broad coalition of unions representing the entertainment industry hailed Governor Jerry Brown's decision to sign into law a two-year extension of California's film and television tax credit. "We commend the legislature and Gov. Brown for recognizing that the motion picture business is an integral part of the economic and cultural powerhouse that has been California during the last 100 years," said a statement issued by a coalition of entertainment industry unions, including the Directors Guild of America, the Teamsters, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and SAG-AFTRA. Brown approved legislation that was overwhelmingly supported by the state Assembly

Comments:
What's this? Democrats handing out $200 million in tax breaks to the film industry?

Somebody tell Jessica Alba and George Clooney that they're not paying their fair share.

Texas, New Mexico and Louisiana have given the film industry huge tax incentives to bring their projects here. They have - in droves. CA is just trying to stay competitive. Maybe they've learned that higher taxes drives away business.

#3. it is the government picking and choosing industries to give our tax dollars to, that is the scandal here.

There are a ton of businesses and industries that need tax relief. So, instead of trying to support the whole business community, Brown and this corrupt Democrat legislature spread their (our!) largess on unions and cronies.

I don't disagree at all. As a tv/film producer in Texas, I'm just explaining some of the rationale as to why this industry was chosen.

Reply 6 - Posted by: CEP, 9/30/2012 11:52:38 PM     (No. 8901213)

Aren't these the people that are lecturing everyone about having to pay their fair share.

Reply 7 - Posted by: billa, 10/1/2012 1:41:09 AM     (No. 8901305)

I really do not care that the entertainment industry gets some tax relief. It is a business which employs 100,000s of people.

What I would like to see is that ticket prices drop to half. Besides the garbage that has been filmed lately, the prices are so high (CA) you could go out to dinner, drinks and dancing for the same price.

By the way one of the many reasons why production costs are astronomical is because all the trade unions have wages so high, that a truck driver who only delivers the set - does not remove it or return it, makes well over $80,000 as well as the lighting people, the set people and many of the behind the scenes labor.

If shareholders and the executive producers of the major studios broke the union, just like every other industry that is strangle held by over paid union laborers, the employment numbers would sky rocket with free market and way more talented employees.

But status quo is so much easier.

Where are the Iacoccos and R. Reagans.

How about that? The fat cats in Tinsel Town make billions, but somehow they're the downtrodden who don't have to pay their fair share.

Isn't Chris Dodd a paid lobbiest for Hollyweird? He is a master of criminal moves.

American eaters, let’s talk about the birds and the bees: The U.S. food supply – from chickens injected with arsenic to dying bee colonies – is under unprecedented siege from a blitz of man-made hazards, meaning some of your favorite treats someday may vanish from your plate, experts say. Warmer and moister air ringing much of the planet – punctuated by droughts in other locales – is threatening the prime ingredients in many daily meals, including the maple syrup on your morning pancakes and the salmon on your evening grill as well as the wine in your glass and the

A Russian scientist has claimed that he has found the first fragments of a mystery object which caused a huge explosion over Siberia more than a century ago. The Tunguska Event in June 1908 saw a mysterious blast more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb flatten trees over an 800 square mile radius, knock people from their feet and shatter windows. The widely accepted theory is that the explosion was caused by an asteroid or comet breaking up as it entered the Earth´s atmosphere. But with no evidence of a comet, just one death and few witnesses, experts have been

NEW YORK - Niall Ferguson, a Harvard history professor and author, is apologizing for saying economist John Maynard Keynes didn´t care about the future because he was gay and had no children. Ferguson made the remarks on Thursday during a question-and-answer session after a prepared speech at the Altegris Strategic Investment conference in Carlsbad, Calif. Asked to comment about Keynes, he suggested that the British economist´s philosophy was shaped by being homosexual and therefore childless. The remarks were reported by the website of Financial Advisor magazine and other online publications. On Saturday Ferguson acknowledged the remarks and said he never

My National Journal colleague Ron Brownstein wrote a column for last week’s magazine that I thought was the most important piece of the week. In it, he argues that “large portions of the Democratic base still don’t understand the political and economic dynamics of the party’s changing electoral coalition.” Brownstein is absolutely right. For liberals, Democrats, and others to argue that Social Security and Medicare should not be touched in any way sends the message that we are just going to run up the tab and send the bill to the millennial and subsequent generations. Over the past five years, Nevada´s primary state psychiatric hospital has put hundreds of mentally ill patients on Greyhound buses and sent them to cities and towns across America. Since July 2008, Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital in Las Vegas has transported more than 1,500 patients to other cities via Greyhound bus, sending at least one person to every state in the continental United States, according to a Bee review of bus receipts kept by Nevada´s mental health division. About a third of those patients were dispatched to California, including more than 200 to Los Angeles County,

ATTLEBORO, Mass. — As many as 25 students at a Massachusetts school were denied lunch this week — with at least some forced to dump their food in the garbage — because they couldn´t pay, school officials and parents said. Outraged parents said some students at Coelho Middle School in Attleboro cried when they were told by a worker for the district´s food service provider they could not eat on Tuesday because they couldn´t pay or their pre-paid accounts were short on funds. The on-site director for the company, Whitsons Culinary Group of Islandia, N.Y., was placed on administrative leave by

This story was co-produced with NPR. Imagine filing your income taxes in five minutes — and for free. You´d open up a pre-filled return, see what the government thinks you owe, make any needed changes and be done. The miserable annual IRS shuffle, gone. It´s already a reality in Denmark, Sweden and Spain. The government-prepared return would estimate your taxes using information your employer and bank already send it. Advocates say tens of millions of taxpayers could use such a system each year, saving them a collective $2 billion and 225 million hours in prep costs and time, according to one estimate.

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State´s top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council. Nuland´s nomination -- which requires Senate confirmation -- could come under scrutiny from Republicans who see her as playing a central role in shaping

What´s so interesting about 60 tea partiers protesting the IRS in San Jose, California on Tuesday, May 21st? The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. What was a DHS agent doing at the San Jose Tea Party protest? (snip) they weren´t just spying on us in San Jose and monitoring us in San Francisco, they were watching us throughout the entire state

Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose

On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.

MARK LEVIN: So why didn´t Chairman Issa hold an investigative hearing a year ago? Why didn´t Chairman Camp, all Republicans, hold an investigative hearing a year ago, and all the other tripping over themselves right now? I´ll tell you why. Because the establishment Republicans, the RINO Republicans, despise the Tea Party. They despise the conservative movement. We exist to be managed, to be shuttled to the polling place, to vote for their candidates. The Karl Roves of the world, and all the rest of them. They fight us in the primaries, they fight us at the grassroots.
