| The world could face a shortage of disposable nappies* after an explosion and fire at a chemical plant in Japan responsible for as much as one fifth of the global market. The blast, which killed a firefighter and injured 35 other emergency service workers, occurred after a fire caused by a chemical reaction broke out on Saturday afternoon at a plant operated by Nippon Shokubai Co. in the city of Himeji, close to Osaka in central Japan. Nippon Shokubai controls the largest share of the world market for super-absorbent polymers, which is used in the production of nappies, and

*Diapers, for those who haven't come across the word heretofore. (Serviette is the word used for table napkin.)
There are more than a few of us dinosaurs around who were not fortunate enough to have disposable diapers at their, um, disposal. Comparing disposables to the other kind, I'd say there will be panic--bacon is nothing compared to this. Perhaps renting a PODS, sticking it in the driveway and filling it full of disposable diapers, quick, before shortages hit, would be a good solution. Of course, you'd need 24/7 security.

This sounds to me like an opportunity. If it's true that this company has that much of a monopoly on the industry, it's about time they had some competition.

Citing defense ministry sources in Seoul, Yonhap said the missiles had crashed into the Sea of Japan, off the eastern coast of the Korean peninsula. The lawmaker leading the charge to investigate the Benghazi terror attack on Friday subpoenaed the co-author of a report that slammed the State Department but didn´t interview Hillary Clinton. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) formally demanded that retired ambassador Thomas Pickering submit to being deposed by the committee next Thursday. The subpoena comes in the wake of a series of acrimonious public exchanges this week between the two men. Issa didn´t issue a subpoena to former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen, who co-authored the Benghazi report with Pickering.
