There was a video leading the Drudge Report on Thursday afternoon of a poor black woman with messed-up teeth saying she's voting for President Obama because he gave her a free phone, and perhaps you have some questions about it. Questions like: Is this video racist? Is Obama really giving away phones? Is anyone really bothered by these Obama Phones? And, come on, this is just blatant racism, right? We'll try to answer them. Info corrected by staff
|
Comments: It is not possible to criticize Obama or any of his supporters for any reason whatsoever without some liberal calling you a racist.

I could see that video turned into an incredible ad. No voice over needed. Just let it play and at the end, "I'm Mitt Romney and I approved this message." Landslide.

I think that the writer concluded that simply recording the words of this person on a video is a racist action. I wonder if that means it is a hate crime?

The good news is that is a term is over-used, people begin ignoring it. When I watch such a video, I think of Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams and it keeps it all in perspective. Mia Love is proof the Black gene pool is not totally depleted.

It may be sterotypical, bbut not racist. The ad spekas for itself, there is no editing, no doctoring of the video. Maybe some racists will enjoy the video too much, some black people will cringe. but the video is not racist, but indicative of some failures in society.

FTA: Strictly speaking, it's not a government-funded program: the telephone companies make payments to a fund administered by a non-profit called the Universal Service Administrative Company, but anyone with a phone bill chips in through a surcharge on their service.
What a crock. It's paid for by consumers via Congressional legislation.
FTA: Is this video racist? Let's start by saying it's racial.
Right. It's "racial" because: a) she happens to be black, apparently "poor" (though how is that proven?). She's also pretty stupid, IMO - since SHE obviously thinks the phones are "Obama phones".
But that's the whole issue - Obama DEPENDS on people like this woman. But to call this racist - or "racial" as the too-clever-by-half author calls it - is pathetic at best, and a blatant lie at the worst.

If the same video had shown a white Obama supporter then it would have been deemed racist for claiming that the only whites who support Obama are complete idiots.
Again, it is not possible to criticize Obama or any of his supporters for any reason whatsoever without some liberal calling you a racist.

The meme on rightwing blogs became that it was an angry mob in search of "Obama money."
The meme of left wingers everywhere is that conservatives are racist. Nothing can happen in American politics unless there is a racial component. Ms. Reeves is a disgusting example of this racism.

The "Its from Obama" message might be delivered along with the phone, either in writing or verbally during the application process.
And the category of "racial" as opposed to "racist" is a good one, in the same way that "sexual" is usually more apt than, "sexist".

My first thought when I saw the article, [not the video] ..... was..... How Sad! ........ Selling your self to the D Party for a lousy Cell Phone.!!!!!
Is that racist? and if so ....how?
What is sad ...... is that so many people are for sell to the Ds for so little .......
Do they think so poorly of themselves that they put S-O-O-O low a value on Themselves and their Freedom!!!!!!!
And if so ...... WHO put them in that position?
Not the 300,000 Union troops who died to free them ........ nor the R. Congressmen who passed the 1950s Civil Rights........ legislation....
Maybe it was ..... and continues to be the D. politicians who after the C W disenfranchised them in the South ......... and who have for over a hundred years in the North ...... buought them and their votes for crumbs and small gifts .... phones and $10 bills each election.....
How tragic and How Pitiful..... NOT HOW RACIST.

Actually, the free-phone program began in 1984 under President Reagan. It was NOT caused by "progressive Republicans" but by a 40 year demonrat controlled Congress. President Reagan didn't supply the LANDLINES, anymore than obama does. TAXPAYERS pay for them...obama just greatly expanded the program and added Cell Phones, which weren't a necessity (sarcasm) in the 1980's..If the Ms.Reeve really wants to investigate "racism" she need look no further than at the face of the woman screaming about Mitt Romney and how much he "sucks". Good Grief!

The charges against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who remained hospitalized with severe injuries, could be filed this weekend, but it might take longer as law enforcement officials continue investigating numerous crime scenes in and around Boston. During oral arguments today at the Supreme Court, Justice Antonin Scalia and attorney Ted Olson had a pointed exchange over whether same-sex marriage is a fundamental right guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. Scalia's argument, which was advanced by Chief Justice John Roberts before him, was that when the institution of marriage developed historically, it was not done with the explicit intent of excluding gay and lesbian couples.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”

But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy.
