The World Doesn’t Love
the First Amendment

Slate Magazine, by Eric Posner

Original Article

The universal response in the United States to the uproar over the anti-Muslim video is that the Muslim world will just have to get used to freedom of expression. President Obama said so himself in a speech at the United Nations today, which included both a strong defense of the First Amendment and (“in the alternative,” as lawyers say) and a plea that the United States is helpless anyway when it comes to controlling information.(snip) This is that Americans need to learn that the rest of the world—and not just Muslims—see no sense in the First Amendment.

Comments:
A scary piece of work by a true leftist who lets the mask slip in this article. Even the commenters at Slate recognize this anti-American dirt-ball for what he is. The only thing that surprises me is that he hasn't landed a position in the 0bama administration.

Immigrants: Don't like the First Amendment, then stay the heck home and don't come here. "Americans": Don't like the First Amendment, move. It's our Constitution; it's our national religion, if you will. I frankly don't care what the world thinks, and Obama did NOT defend the First Amendment. He said that "...the future doesn’t belong to people who slander the Prophet Mohammed." Guess what, Barky. You're dead wrong. And it's my right to say so.

Neither do a lot of so-called "Americans," as we're seeing and hearing more and more these days. If they mess with the First Amendment and cross the line, they're really going to hate the real-world application of the Second.

Typical -and dangerous- obfuscation regarding freedom of speech. This is particularly prevalent among academics in America who, along with journalists, are the biggest enemies of free speech in the country. This man, an attorney, happens to be affiliated with the University of Chicago Law School. There are more like him. They constitute a much bigger danger to American liberties than all of the world's Muslims together.

The world loves the USA.

Why else do they come here in droves?

Mexicans don't run to Russia, or France or Iran.

They come here for free speech, liberty and
the right to to start a business.

FTA:"But there is another possible response. This is that Americans need to learn that the rest of the world—and not just Muslims—see no sense in the First Amendment. Even other Western nations take a more circumspect position on freedom of expression than we do, realizing that often free speech must yield to other values and the need for order."
This is amazing, he slams the First Amendment which gives him the right to do so! This is further proof that liberalism is a mental disease.

Ah yes, Chicago continues to be a hot bed of communist love. The Demonrat party and the Leftists who populate it are all about control of others. They are forever trying to create opportunities to shut down free speech. Of course it never applies to them since they are so enlightened.

Vote out all Demonrats if you want to hang onto remaining freedoms.

United Nations human rights instruments provide almost the same level of free speech protection as does the American Constitution. The most obvious difference is that Americans take their First Amendment rights seriously whereas leftists around the world ignore UN human rights instruments because these instruments undermine the collectivist approach so favoured by the left.

This is only one of many attacks of the liberals against freedom. I recall Thomas Freedman looking lovingly at the authoritarian Chinese government and several Democratic Party elected officials talking about how there is too much "democracy" in America.

These are signs of a political movement that has lost the intellectual argument for their beliefs. They have slid into the lazy intellectual habit of wishfully thinking that if only they could compel everyone to get on their program, they would succeed. Suddenly, dissent has become unpatriotic.

This new love for restricting speech on Islam is actually a sign of the cowardice of liberals. They have had no problems insulting Christians for many years with shameful lies but now, they will not allow anyone else to tell the embarrrassing truth (as verifiable from Islamic scriptures themselves) about their new found BFF, Islamofascism, including the *true* biographical information of its founder.

based on what our 'current' President said at the UN...he is not a big fan of 'free speach' either...right?

The ''world'' according to Slate can bite my big broad beam! Let them nitpick each other to death, but don't tread on me. I'd like to see a rusty spike driven through the heart of Political correctness. If Slate is the face of that, then so much the better.

Good point, #6. If Islam is so darn good, why don't folks flock to those Third World and Sixth Century places??

Yo, Eric! We didn't ask them when we adopted the First Amendment, or any of the rest of it. So their opinions still don't matter. Got it?

#10: Read the whole thing. Some of the last words in the "UN Declaration of Universal Human Rights" say "anything above" [all the rights "granting" language] "that conflicts with the goals of the UN is void." No, I didn't bother to go pull out the exact words. I know what they said, and it's a totalitarian crock.

#13: "Flock back"? Nuts, send 'em back.

Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), the Senate Finance Committee Chairman, predicted in an interview airing Sunday that the scandal surrounding the Internal Revenue Service selectively targeting conservative political groups will grow. “I have a hunch that a lot more is going to come out, frankly,” Baucus told Bloomberg News. “It’s broader than the current focus.” Steven Miller, the acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service who was ousted earlier this week, is testifying Friday before the House Ways and Means committee in what is expected to be the first of many congressional grillings over the scandal.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., charged Republicans with “exploiting” the questions surrounding the Benghazi talking points, the AP phone records seizure, and the IRS scandal in order to attack President Obama because “they fear” his agenda and eloquence. “This president — they make so much of these issues because this president is such a great president,” Pelosi told reporters during her weekly press briefing. “They will use talking points on Benghazi, they will use the IRS, they will use AP, as, I think, subterfuges — evasions — of what the American people want us to do.”

Public Policy Polling´s new national survey paints a rather unprecedented picture for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie´s 2016 aspirations -- one that is alternatively beneficial and uncomfortable. According to PPP, Christie earns favorable ratings across political ideologies, something that hasn´t been seen in a potential presidential nominee since Republican John McCain in 2008. Overall, 40 percent of Democrats, 41 percent of Republicans, and 45 percent of Independents view Christie favorably. He is the only potential 2016 candidate who earns favorable views across party lines

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has a personal reason for wanting to ban discrimination in the workplace. "My niece is a lesbian," Reid told the Huffington Post on Wednesday. "She´s a school teacher. Her employment shouldn´t be affected with that. We should have a law that says that, not just the good graces of wherever you work." Reid´s revelation is just the latest example of a member of Congress explaining a personal reason behind a political stance.

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) predicted Thursday that President Obama will renounce his signature healthcare law in the face of mounting conservative opposition to the reform. Bachmann said the ongoing scandal involving the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and challenges in implementing the Affordable Care Act put the law´s survival "back on the table." "The issue is now revived," she said at a press conference. "We believe that the heat will become so hot that even the president of the United States will be forced to repudiate his signature legislation."

Obama administration officials who were in key positions on Sept. 11, 2012, acknowledge that a range of mistakes were made the night of the attacks on the U.S. missions in Benghazi, and in messaging to Congress and the public in the aftermath. The officials spoke to CBS News in a series of interviews and communications under the condition of anonymity so that they could be more frank in their assessments. They do not all agree on the list of mistakes and it's important to note that they universally claim that any errors or missteps did not cost lives and reflect "incompetence rather than malice or cover up.

In the wake of one of the worst abuses of government power in recent history, many are rushing to frame the Internal Revenue Service scandal as simply an attack on conservative activists. That view risks creating a partisan political football and misses a fundamentally scarier abuse that exceeds the scandals of Watergate or any other prior government abuse. The IRS has admitted that since May 2010 it targeted grassroots-conservative organizations that had applied for tax-exempt status, unfairly subjecting them to rigorous scrutiny due to their political leanings. Such groups were told they were required to comply with IRS requests,

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.

The lawmaker leading the charge to investigate the Benghazi terror attack on Friday subpoenaed the co-author of a report that slammed the State Department but didn´t interview Hillary Clinton. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) formally demanded that retired ambassador Thomas Pickering submit to being deposed by the committee next Thursday. The subpoena comes in the wake of a series of acrimonious public exchanges this week between the two men. Issa didn´t issue a subpoena to former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen, who co-authored the Benghazi report with Pickering.
