This past week, a black mother in Baltimore discovered her 16-year-old son, covered by a hoodie and a mask, participating in the riot that shook the city. So she chased him down, cursed him and beat him as a bystander captured the scene on video. Once it was posted, the consensus online, in social media and on cable TV held her up as a hero. A still from the video graced the cover of the New York Post with this headline: “Forget the National Guard .?.?. send in the moms.” In this country, when black mothers fulfill stereotypes of mammies,

The six officers accused in the death of Freddie Gray face a litany of charges that include second-degree depraved-heart murder, involuntary manslaughter, false imprisonment and misconduct in office. The officers — three white, three African American — represent a broad spectrum of experience on Baltimore’s police force. Three of them joined the force three years ago. The driver, who faces the most serious charges, is African American and has been on the force since 1999. One officer had his weapons confiscated after a former girlfriend contacted the Carroll County sheriff’s office to say she feared for his safety. The officers

To entertain the citizens of Rome, circular arenas – circuses -- were built to house staged events of various sorts, including the slaughter of Christians. After Rome fell, itinerant performers took their shows on the road offering somewhat less grand, but still popular, entertainments. In the United States for the past few years the traveling inner city riots seem to be playing the same role with their own stock characters. There are the young men who died in the course of criminal acts, portrayed at first by the media as innocent children who later turn out to have extensive rap

Why Do So Many People Hate the

You know Hillary Clinton’s voice, right? I mean, you know it. It’s just so loud and annoying. Or maybe it´s like a nagging wife. Or inauthentic—that phony Southern accent! Those flat Midwestern vowels! Whatever it is, her voice is burned into your brain. Now think of Jeb Bush’s voice. It’s so—wait, what does it sound like again? He sounds just ... like a guy, maybe? It´s probably hard for you to recall distinguishing features about most of the Republican candidates. (Snip)If you watch old clips of Clinton from the 1992 campaign, she is presenting herself in a much more feminine

This is the first officer to be pictured out of the six cops charged over the death of Freddie Gray. Officer Edward Nero, 29, is facing 10 years in jail for allegedly assaulting the 25-year-old before he suffered a severe spine injury and died. The married father-of-one, who is also charged with misconduct in public office, joined the Baltimore Police Department in 2012. He will face trial alongside five colleagues, whose charges range from assault to manslaughter and murder, after the Maryland State´s Attorney, Marilyn Mosby, declared Gray´s death was a homicide, and there is probable cause to file criminal

Because the rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer, according to Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) A CNN anchor asked Ellison on Thursday, "How do you explain what is going on in Baltimore this week?" "Well, of course, excessive police officers and staggering unemployment go together," Ellison responded, "because what we´ve done in the United States, as we´ve said, that the affluent part of our society is going to demand more tax breaks, more wealth, more privilege, leaving less for the less fortunate, and the way we keep the less fortunate in control is through policing and prisons.

Presidential hopeful and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum showed some support for Bruce Jenner at the South Carolina Republican Party’s convention Saturday. Santorum, a staunch social conservative, told reporters he believes Jenner when he says he is a woman. “If he says he’s a woman, then he’s a woman,” he stated during a roundtable with reporters at the convention. He continued: My responsibility as a human being is to love and accept everybody. Not to criticize people for who they are. I can criticize, and I do, for what people do, for their behavior. But as far as for who
