The stock market on the Orient Express
PJ Media, by David P. Goldman [Spengler]

Everybody did it in Agatha Christie´s novel Murder on the Orient Express, and the same problem bedevils the US stock market today. A dozen co-conspirators killed the victim in the Christie novel. Here are a dozen factors that bedevil the stock market: 1) Bond yields continue to rise even while the broad stock market indices tank an unusual event. That, as I argued earlier this week, is in part due to the overstretching of bank balance sheets, which makes it hard for foreign investors to hedge currency risk in US portfolios. 2) Corporations spend more buying back their own stock than

Thanks for the post. As always, Spengler is succinct in his analysis. Of the dozen, my greatest concern is #11 and that China will not, or cannot, meet the US on mutually agreeable terms.

The increasing trade deficit with China, along with the reductions in our exports overall were the expected and I have to believe desired result of the tariffs.

Having a common enemy is a viable strategy for a leader to get people rallied behind him, but I liked Trump better when that common enemy was government waste, abuse and regulation. You know, the things that improved the economy rather than throttle it.

Respectfully, the market is pricing in the risk that the Dems could regain some power this election and derail President Trump and the US.
The Dems have told everyone what they will do, and it will be bad. Portfolio managers in the market correctly have to prepare for that.
The other probable large equity market seller recently, were some insurance companies raising some funds for Florida claims.

My beef with many of the dire warnings is based on an unstated assumption that business does not know what they are doing. The concern over corporations buying back their stock, instead of spending most of their profits on expanding, hiring, etc. assumes that a corporation will never do those things, and just wants to buy back their stock and remain as they are.

Successful corporations have strategies to protect themselves and ensure survival. They plan ahead for contingencies and are very careful about expenditures- unlike government. They will expand and hire when they see the benefit of doing so, not as a social program. Overextending is a dangerous thing for business. Unlike government, it cannot just take money to cover bad management.

When it reaches 10% drop, which would be 2500 points, it is a correction. Time to buy. Otherwise, just noise, relax.

INDIAN SHORES — Officer Matthew Holm shined a flashlight at the oncoming car, the bright beam cutting through the early morning darkness in this sleepy beach town. He motioned for the driver to pull over. Instead, the car accelerated right at him. Holm fired his gun once at the black Mazda before it hit him. The Indian Shores police officer landed on the hood, rolled up the windshield and then fell off the side. Four months later, a defense attorney took aim at the officer. The driver, who was arrested in the May 1 incident and is now in jail, got a

Nancy Pelosi walked smack into the middle of a local congressional fight in Florida yesterday and was accosted by dozens of protesters -- some of them from the violent right-wing group Proud Boys -- who screamed "communist!" at the House minority leader. Pelosi was on her way to an event for Democratic congressional candidate Donna Shalala, who stuck her foot in it by inviting Georgia Rep. Barbara Lee -- a Fidel Castro admirer -- to the same event. The district is heavily Hispanic and anti-Castro, having been represented previously by GOP Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, and Shalala´s tone-deaf move to invite Lee

Over the next several weeks, Americans will be going to the polls in the most eagerly anticipated and consequential midterm election in our nation’s history. Voters will decide whether to continue the President’s agenda which includes cutting regulations and taxes, boosting our military, renegotiating our trade deals, and focusing on border security. This agenda has produced incredible economic results in less than two years. This week, the World Economic Forum rated the United States as the most competitive economy among the 140 countries ranked. This is the first time since 2008 that the United States has topped this important list.

LAKELAND — A Lakeland city commissioner surrendered Friday to face a second-degree murder charge in the Oct. 3 fatal shooting of a suspected shoplifter at a military surplus store. Michael Dunn, who has served on the City Commission since January, arrived at the Polk County Jail in Bartow shortly after 6 p.m., accompanied by detectives in an unmarked car. At a news conference a half-hour later, Polk State Attorney Brian Haas said he doesn’t believe the killing of 50-year-old Christobal Lopez was premeditated. But he also doesn’t see grounds for a self-defense claim. So he took the matter to a grand

TALLAHASSEE — It´s been nine days since Hurricane Michael slammed the Panhandle and decimated whole cities, from the coastal beach towns to the rural, wooded communities north. Since the Category 4 storm hit Oct. 10, at least 27 people have been confirmed dead in Florida and hundreds are still missing. While the state has released updating counts of the dead, many of those victims remain largely nameless — so far, just a collection of ages, home counties and causes of death. In Liberty County, a 78-year-old man died after complaining of chest pain and shortness of breath during the storm. In

ST. PETERSBURG — The ancient Roman poet Virgil is credited with coining the term "snake in the grass" (latet anguis in herba), but he probably didn’t mean one like this. Logan Ungerer was playing a couple of rounds at the Mangrove Bay and Cypress Links golf courses on Columbus Day when he spotted something undulating across the green near the 14th hole at Mangrove Bay. "I saw what looked like a stick blowing in the wind on the green," he told WTVT-Fox 13. "As I got closer I saw a bird picking at it and knew it was a snake." Not just any

As someone who first started doing political blogging in 2001, I can tell you that there was once a time when the chances of a regular person being cut to ribbons online for a faux pas were practically zero. As someone who has been deluged with negative comments after building a top 10,000 in the world website, has received numerous death threats and quasi-death threats (i.e. “Someone should slit your throat), has been doxed, has been the target of hit pieces in BuzzFeed and the New York Times, and has literally had thousands of negative tweets aimed at him

CIUDAD HIDALGO, Mexico — Despite Mexican efforts to stop them at the border, a growing throng of Central American migrants resumed their advance toward the U.S. border early Sunday in southern Mexico. Their numbers swelled to about 5,000 overnight and at first light they set out walking toward the Mexican town of Tapachula, 10 abreast in a line stretching approximately a mile. It was not immediately clear where the additional travelers had materialized from since about 2,000 gathered on the Mexican side Saturday night. They seemed likely to be people who had been waiting on the bridge over the Suchiate

TAPACHULA, MEXICO -- A growing caravan of roughly 7,000 Central American immigrants continued its trek toward the United States on Sunday, blowing past Mexican police and immigration officials. The group, which has swelled in size in recent days, set out before dawn on the only road out of the small Mexican border town of Ciudad Hidalgo. It arrived in the afternoon in the city of Tapachula, more than 20 miles away. The migrants, nearly all from the poor and violent nation of Honduras, posed a growing political and humanitarian calamity for Mexico,

This is beyond odd, but here goes. I rise to defend Hillary Clinton. She is under attack and this time, the long knives are wielded by members of her own clan. Suddenly, after two years of indulging Clinton’s blame games and pity parties, lefty pundits say she’s talking too much, she’s stuck in the past, she had her chance and she blew it. Vanity Fair, declaring that she “still hasn’t learned the lessons of #MeToo,” is furious that Clinton said her husband’s Oval Office dalliance with Monica Lewinsky was not an abuse of power

Every big U.S. election is interesting, but the coming midterms are fascinating for a reason most commentators forget to mention: The Democrats have no issues. The economy is booming and America’s international position is strong. In foreign affairs, the U.S. has remembered in the nick of time what Machiavelli advised princes five centuries ago: Don’t seek to be loved, seek to be feared. The contrast with the Obama years must be painful for any honest leftist.

Hillary Clinton joined Eric Garner’s mother Gwen Carr for a book signing in Manhattan, New York Friday. Gwen Carr penned a book titled, “This Stops Now” in her ongoing effort to pursue justice for her son, Eric Garner who died after a Staten Island police officer held him in a choke hold. Back in 2014, Staten Island police officers attempted to arrest Eric Garner because he was selling unlicensed cigarettes. Video shows Eric Garner resisting arrest, however; racism was blamed for his death. Twice-failed presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, who wrote the forward for Gwen Carr’s book, nodded in agreement after she

San Francisco - Cow´s milk is allegedly a symbol used by white supremacists, according to PETA. In a recent statement, the animal advocate organization explains that dairy milk has been the drink of choice for supremacists because "the dairy industry inflicts extreme violence on other living beings." According to PETA, "some people might be surprised to learn that cows used by the dairy industry are slaughtered after about five years because their bodies are so spent from being kept constantly pregnant." (Snip) Peta links this concept to white supremacy by saying cows are controlled by humans, similar to the mindset of
