The stock market on the Orient Express
PJ Media, by David P. Goldman [Spengler]

Everybody did it in Agatha Christie´s novel Murder on the Orient Express, and the same problem bedevils the US stock market today. A dozen co-conspirators killed the victim in the Christie novel. Here are a dozen factors that bedevil the stock market: 1) Bond yields continue to rise even while the broad stock market indices tank an unusual event. That, as I argued earlier this week, is in part due to the overstretching of bank balance sheets, which makes it hard for foreign investors to hedge currency risk in US portfolios. 2) Corporations spend more buying back their own stock than

Thanks for the post. As always, Spengler is succinct in his analysis. Of the dozen, my greatest concern is #11 and that China will not, or cannot, meet the US on mutually agreeable terms.

Respectfully, the market is pricing in the risk that the Dems could regain some power this election and derail President Trump and the US.
The Dems have told everyone what they will do, and it will be bad. Portfolio managers in the market correctly have to prepare for that.
The other probable large equity market seller recently, were some insurance companies raising some funds for Florida claims.

My beef with many of the dire warnings is based on an unstated assumption that business does not know what they are doing. The concern over corporations buying back their stock, instead of spending most of their profits on expanding, hiring, etc. assumes that a corporation will never do those things, and just wants to buy back their stock and remain as they are.

Successful corporations have strategies to protect themselves and ensure survival. They plan ahead for contingencies and are very careful about expenditures- unlike government. They will expand and hire when they see the benefit of doing so, not as a social program. Overextending is a dangerous thing for business. Unlike government, it cannot just take money to cover bad management.

When it reaches 10% drop, which would be 2500 points, it is a correction. Time to buy. Otherwise, just noise, relax.

In a revealing New York Times expose, an investigation revealed that hundreds of apps are tracking our every move, many without asking permission or explaining what they are doing with the information. They know exactly where we are and where we have been at almost any moment in time. It’s a broad surveillance effort, affecting over 200 million Americans, designed to gather more personal data and sell it to corporations, including advertisers, banks, insurance companies, health providers, and retailers. IBM, for example, is one of the key players in this industry. Examples in the article include apps tracking people into hospital

It isn’t often that a book can revolutionize the general understanding of an entire concept, and can lead to a fresh way of approaching a problem that had hitherto stymied even the most acclaimed experts in the field. Such a book is Jamie Glazov’s remarkable Jihadist Psychopath: How He Is Charming, Seducing, and Devouring Us; if heeded, his book could do nothing less than break the West out of the suicidal death spiral in which it seems inextricably caught today. Jihadist Psychopath is most certainly the first book to tackle head-on, from a new and entirely unexpected angle, the odd

Facebook got its start as FaceMash: a site comparing the attractiveness of female Harvard students. It was then reborn as a social network for Harvard students, Ivy League schools and then everyone. More recent surveys showed that the average Facebook user in the United States is 40 years old. That makes Facebook users less likely to start stupid viral trends, those tend to come from younger social media apps, some owned by Facebook, and more likely to be deeply engaged in politics. Mark Zuckerberg had created a company to appeal to college students who wanted to rate the cutest girls

Did the Deep State Sandbag President
Trump with the Huawei Arrest?
PJ Media, by David P. Goldman [Spengler]    Original Article

The Washington Post reports today: "An unnamed senior U.S. official with direct knowledge of the matter told The Washington Post last week that Trump learned of the arrest [of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou] only after the meal had concluded and reacted with intense anger." The Washington Post may not be the most reliable source on internal matters of the Trump administration, but the story rings true -- and it is frightening. On Dec. 6, I conjectured in Asia Times that the president´s enemies set him up. It´s looking more and more like a Deep State operation against the president. The

When I was a teenager living in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., Arlington, Falls Church, and Fairfax were still sleepy small Southern towns. The red-brick houses were tidy middle-class dwellings. Many of the dads worked in the District, as we called it, but came home in the evenings to be with their families to attend high-school ball games, not talk politics. The cost of living wasn´t particularly high, and the cares of the nation seemed very far away, even though they were right across the Potomac. With the Mueller team failing to indict President Trump for collusion with the Russians, Mueller´s ally, former FBI director James Comey has gone to Plan B: exhorting Democrats to beat Trump at ballot box. (Snip) What we are seeing here is the partisan agenda of Comey exposed as those desperate cries to Democrats go out. Comey was never about rule of law in this long-ranging, and unprecedented for an ex FBI director, campaign against President Trump. He was just about getting rid of the guy he isn´t happy he saw get elected. Since when have we ever heard

A Volusia County courtroom was the setting of a strange scene Sunday night when a man accused of murdering his roommates began yelling “God,” according to a report by WKMG-Channel 6. Damon Kemp, 19, faces two charges of second-degree murder and a burglary charge, according to the Volusia County Jail. Kemp was arrested Thursday after authorities learned about the murders of Trey Ingraham and Jordan Paden both of whom were 19-years-old, WKMG reported. Woke 29-year-old Congresswoman-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went after White House Chief of Staff John Kelly yesterday. Why? She wants him to apologize to Democrat Rep. Frederica Wilson for supposedly "lying" about her to reporters.(tweet)"Cowardice." Quite a big word to use against a four-star Marine Corps general whose son was killed in Afghanistan. Wilson´s spat with Kelly came last year when she alleged President Trump disrespected a military family during a phone call. Kelly disputed her characterization and gave a briefing to the White House press corps on how the military handles casualties.

If Tuesday’s instantly famous Oval Office meeting is a harbinger of things to come, it’s going to be a long two years for “Chuck and Nancy.” Presidents can be intimidating, and Trump had home court advantage during Tuesday’s meeting. However, Chuck Schumer seemed especially outmatched by a very forceful Donald Trump. As Bill Kristol (no Trump apologist) put it: “[B]ased on what I saw of their respective performances in that Oval Office meeting today, I don’t understand why it’s Nancy Pelosi who’s facing a leadership challenge and Chuck Schumer who isn’t.” The mainstream media will focus

New York Times opinion writer Jennifer Weiner told CBS This Morning hosts that holiday office parties are nothing more than another opportunity for women to be sexually harassed. In her article titled “The Torture of Dressing for Your Office Holiday Party,” Weiner described the holiday season as “the least wonderful time of the year.” “Why are we having holiday parties at all?” complained Weiner to Gayle King on Monday morning. “Wouldn’t you rather have an extra $100 in your paycheck than have to put on the Spanx, put on the heels, be social with the guy with, like, the stale coffee breath
