SCOTUS green-lights Menendez corruption trial

The Supreme Court has dashed Robert Menendez’ last hope to prevent the first trial of a sitting US Senator for corruption since Ted Stevens in 2008 (which was posthumously vacated). The top court refused to take the appeal of a Third District appellate ruling that refused to overturn Menendez’ April 2015 indictment on the basis of constitutional privilege under the Speech or Debate Clause. That leaves the door open to a trial in the fall, just as the three-term incumbent ramps up an expected re-election campaign in the midterms: The Supreme Court has rejected Sen. Bob Menendez’s attempt to throw out

FBI Director James Comey, in an extraordinary House hearing meant to clear the air on a host of allegations relating to the 2016 campaign, confirmed publicly for the first time Monday that the bureau is probing Russian meddling in the race including possible “links” to the Trump team – while disputing the president’s claim that his predecessor wiretapped him. The FBI director was called to testify alongside National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers for a public session of the House intelligence committee. Comey’s testimony could serve to fuel tensions with the White House, which maintains there’s no evidence of Trump-Russia

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Monday accused Democrats of making up allegations that Russia interfered in last year´s election, and said Congress and the FBI should be going after media leaks instead. His tweets came just hours before a potentially politically damaging hearing in which FBI Director James Comey and National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers planned to testify on allegations of Russian hacking and whether there were any connections between Moscow and Trump´s campaign. “The Democrats made up and pushed the Russian story as an excuse for running a terrible campaign. Big advantage in Electoral College & lost!”

Americans love a good story. Pop culture is littered with the fictional tales of heroic characters. The majority of stories today still follow a three-act structure that dates back to Aristotle. Epic films start with the hero called to action in the first act; then the tension rises in the second (how will our hero get out of this situation?); and finally, in the third act, a resolution. By the end, the hero will have achieved his victory (normally) but he will also be changed in some fundamental way before the story is over. Unfortunately for us, this reality has followed

A Texas high school´s on-site prayer room -- which serves as a spot where Muslim students can pray -- is stirring controversy. Liberty High School in Frisco established the room in 2009, but Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is concerned that the room may be off-limits to students of other religious denominations. He said in a letter Friday to the school district that any exclusion would be inconsistent with the First Amendment’s protection of religious liberty. A school district spokesman responded that the classroom is available to “students of all walks of life” in the afternoon when it is vacant.

While President Trump’s weekend Twitter assertion that “Germany owes vast sums of money to NATO” is disputed by experts – and by Berlin – it draws attention to the fact that Germany, like the majority of the 28 members of the alliance, has yet to meet a NATO-agreed commitment to devote two percent of GDP to defense spending. At the same time, a closer look at NATO funding also underlines that – as is the case with the United Nations – the U.S. contributes more than one-fifth of the direct, collective funding that keeps NATO’s military and civilian operations on track. As a Space Shuttle emergency landing strip, Roberts Field had the longest runway in Africa. During a two-week site survey, the director general of civil aviation asked our team of

With Democrats facing tough prospects in the midterm elections, will they also have to worry about primary challenges from their left flank? During his presidential campaign, Sen. Bernie Sanders never quite decided whether his "political revolution" could coexist with the Democratic Party or needed to overthrow it. Now, Sanders is one of the most popular political figures in the country and the activists he galvanized have gone on to start new groups, join old ones, or run electoral campaigns. The path of Sanders´ former staffers reflects the split in his movement, and the some are already galvanizing for the 2018

Health Reform: Critics of the Republican´s ObamaCare replacement plan — and many moderate Republicans as well — complain that it will result in millions losing insurance. What nobody asks is whether we have too much insurance today. Insurance, after all, is supposed to make health care more affordable. But what if it´s making it less so? University of Michigan economist Mark Perry recently compared inflation rates for health care with price increases for cosmetic surgery. What he discovered was illuminating. From 1998 to 2016, the overall inflation rate was 47.2%. But for medical care services, prices went up 100%. And for hospital services,

But alas, in these days of fake news and fanatical dead-ender opposition to President Trump, those MSM TV networks committed to driving Trump from office might want to consider retraining for their talking heads. President Trump’s first federal budget is very important – but not for the reasons so widely discussed in recent days. [Snip] That’s because presidents can request, suggest, propose, even plead. But Congress decides the real spending. As proudly proclaimed by some congressional denizens in D.C.’s fetid political environment, Trump’s budget is “DOA.” As is any president’s budget in modern history. President Trump’s federal budget outline is to be expanded in May, when it likely will matter even less, coming after much congressional budgeting. Trump’s budget is only important for
