It isn’t so much that former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was a prophet. Just that he had read a book or two. Throughout the course of the campaign, the turnaround artist and blue state Republican issued some dire but necessary warnings to the American public about how the geopolitical environment was changing for the worse. In 2012, Romney called it “troubling” and “alarming” that Barack Obama had essentially appeased the Russian bear by offering concessions like the withdrawal of interceptor missile and radar installations in Eastern Europe without reciprocity from Moscow. He said that Russia’s actions have

On and on it goes, each detail more ghastly than the last as the tale emerges of men of Pakistani origin abusing white children in Rotherham. [Snip] It was Blair and his cohorts who decided to change the face of Britain without bothering to mention it to the rest of us and they most certainly succeeded. They opened the gates to mass immigration purely as an act of political spite to the Tories and never gave a thought to the consequences. Anyone who even murmured that maybe this wasn´t a good idea was shouted down as a racist. And heaven

While the world waits for the Leader of the Free World to articulate something remotely resembling a coherent strategy regarding the Islamic State, self-satisfied White House flacks cleverly remind that the administration’s overarching foreign policy is “don’t do stupid s***.” (Kissinger wishes he were as deep.) This wins the prize for galactic obtuseness. The flacks’ brilliant hero cancels missile defense for Eastern Europe, naively presents Russia with a “reset” button, touts his post-election “flexibility” to Medvedev, and then is flummoxed when the rapacious Putin sees a green light to reconstitute the former Soviet Union. Obama utterly squanders an historic opportunity to change

Lesson for lawmakers in Landrieu,

Every election cycle, some candidate or elected official gets hammered for not really living in their district. The persons getting this treatment this time around are senior senators Mary Landrieu, who represents Louisiana, and Pat Roberts who represents Kansas. Both lawmakers are being attacked by their opponents for really living in the Washington/Virginia area and having questionable residency back home. There are serious issues and sometimes not so serious issues in every election cycle. In a year in which voters hate Congress with a passion, the disapproval rating for members of the Senate and the House of Representatives is at a whopping 75

Government mistakenly withheld

The federal government accidentally withheld $2.4 million out of September disability compensation checks for 12,000 veterans owed the money for service-related physical or emotional disabilities, according to the Department of Veterans. The VA, which apologized for the mistake Wednesday, says it has worked with the U.S. Department of Treasury to pay back all the money either by direct deposit or with checks sent by mail. The "withholding error" occurred in cases where veterans were participating in repayment plans where a portion of their disability check was to be withheld to cover a VA healthcare debt owed to the agency by the veteran,

A Douglas fir affectionately named Yoda survived many a drought in its six-plus centuries of existence in a rugged lava flow in the El Malpais National Monument area near Grants, New Mexico, but it couldn’t weather the current extreme drought in the parched Southwest. The recent death of the 7-foot-tall tree, estimated to be more than 650 years old, is a testament to the severity of today´s drought, scientists say. A core sample obtained in 1991 established that Yoda had lived at least since 1406, but it likely had been alive since 1350 or so, Henri Grissino-Mayer of the University of Tennessee,

Last weekend, several Lebanese activists started a trend which has since gained prominence under the hashtag #BurnISISFlagChallenge or #BurnISIS. The protesters burned an Islamic State flag in retaliation to the presumed beheading of a Lebanese officer, an idea which quickly motivated others to post similar pictures or videos. The self-perpetuating campaign follows the model of the well-known #IceBucketChallenge, and has found supporters on Twitter, Facebook and other social networks. Here is one example:

One of the ongoing conundrums of Middle East politics is the fact that the United States and Iran have wound up on the same side in the conflict against ISIS in Iraq and Syria. But in this case the enemy of our enemy isn’t necessarily our friend. Or at least it shouldn’t serve to help weaken American resolve to stop Iran’s drive for a nuclear weapon. During his Labor Day speech on Monday, President Obama attempted to invent a new constitutional right – one that should alarm all conservatives, especially during this time of grave national security concerns. As he ticked off his litany of principle rights he supports, such as “women’s rights and civil rights,” he added an item to the list – “immigration rights.” (Snip) Conservatives must be clear, that while reasonable people can debate the amount and type of immigration from a policy standpoint, the notion of a constitutional or natural right for anyone in the world to come to the United States is a radical and dangerous one.

Vladimir Putin’s efforts to establish hegemony over Ukraine may now have reached a decisive point both for the balance of power in Central and Eastern Europe and for the NATO alliance. Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko warned on August 30 that Russia’s invasion of his country and extensive aid to pro-Moscow separatists could soon “reach the point of no return,” becoming a generalized conflict. More than half the people passing through U.S. airports now receive preferential security treatment because they pose no clear threat to aviation safety, federal officials say. The shift has significantly reduced the lines at security checkpoints, according to the Transportation Security Administration, reflecting the goal of TSA Administrator John S. Pistole to move away from a “one-size-fits-all” approach to screening passengers. For years, the TSA faced criticism from Congress, the travel industry and fliers for giving the same scrutiny to grandmothers, toddlers, airline pilots, soldiers and other seemingly harmless passengers that

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R) has denied Democrat Chad Taylor’s request to be removed from the Kansas Senate ballot. His Thursday decision means Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) will face three candidates on the ballot this fall — Taylor, independent Greg Orman and libertarian Randall Batson — boosting the vulnerable senator’s reelection prospects. Now, Taylor could siphon off enough anti-Roberts votes from Orman, who’s been surging in the race and is now seen by Democrats as their best shot to take Roberts down, to deliver the senator an opening for a win.
