David Cameron and Barack Obama today demanded other Nato countries start paying their way by drastically increasing military spending. [Snip] The United States has by far the biggest military budget in Nato – spending more than four per cent of its GDP on defence. Out of the remaining 27 Nato members only Britain, Greece and Estonia spend more than two per cent of their national income on defence. In today’s joint article in The Times, Mr Cameron and the US President wrote: ‘By working together we are stronger, whether in standing up to Russia or confronting Isil.’

A computer server hosting information for Healthcare.gov, the flagship Obamacare website that millions of Americans have trusted with their social security numbers, income totals and other sensitive personal information, was the subject of a hacker attack earlier this summer, officials said Thursday. The federal government wasn´t aware it had been hacked on July 8 until just ten days ago. The admission is fueling fires on Capitol Hill. The powerful House Oversight and Government Reform Committee announced Thursday afternoon that it has ordered Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) chief Marilyn Tavenner to testify in a September 18 hearing about

The pay hike was agreed upon at the annual Wage Council, which on Monday convened representatives of the government, unions and businesses at the Labor Ministry. The decision, signed by Labor Minister Carlos Tomada, establishes a new wage increase beginning in January, when the monthly minimum wage will rise to 4,716 pesos, equivalent to $561 at the current exchange rate.

British jihadis fighting in Syria want to come home after becoming disillusioned with the conflict, it emerged today. In the last three years, more than 500 radicalised Britons are believed to have headed out to the war-torn country, where Islamist groups are fighting President Bashar Assad´s forces. But some of those who signed up to fight have now contacted authorities in Britain saying they have had enough of the war-zone and want to return home, it was reported today. Almost every day there is yet another revelation in the Rotherham child abuse scandal, and it is all too easy to become diverted from calm consideration of the deep-seated causes of the affair into emotional outbursts of anger at those who committed such crimes and those who pretended that it was not happening. The authorities, local government, social services, education authorities, and police alike had begun to talk about their relations with "the community" as though it were a sovereign body and accepting that different codes of conduct applied within

According to NBC’s Peter King and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, NFL officials called teams around the league to gauge interest in signing Michael Sam to their practice squad. Yesterday, the Dallas Cowboys signed Sam, who is trying to become the first openly gay player in NFL history. King reported this during the pre-game show on NBC prior to the Seahawks/Packers season opener Thursday night. “The Rams waived Michael Sam, the first openly gay player trying to make an NFL roster, he was unemployed for two days,” King said. “During that time a league official contacted multiple teams asking if they

One of the ongoing conundrums of Middle East politics is the fact that the United States and Iran have wound up on the same side in the conflict against ISIS in Iraq and Syria. But in this case the enemy of our enemy isn’t necessarily our friend. Or at least it shouldn’t serve to help weaken American resolve to stop Iran’s drive for a nuclear weapon. (Snip) The Obama administration fled Iraq prematurely while staying out of the Syria conflict and thus set in motion the chain of events that led to the frightening rise of ISIS. So it is not in much of a position to pick and choose its allies in its halting efforts to stop the terrorist movement from

Britain could launch air strikes in Iraq and Syria within weeks after David Cameron set out a potential timetable for a military intervention and pledged to “use everything we have in our armoury” to wipe out Islamist terrorists. Downing Street was gauging whether Conservative MPs would support a military intervention against Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil), with government whips asking MPs where they stood on the matter. During his Labor Day speech on Monday, President Obama attempted to invent a new constitutional right – one that should alarm all conservatives, especially during this time of grave national security concerns. As he ticked off his litany of principle rights he supports, such as “women’s rights and civil rights,” he added an item to the list – “immigration rights.” (Snip) Conservatives must be clear, that while reasonable people can debate the amount and type of immigration from a policy standpoint, the notion of a constitutional or natural right for anyone in the world to come to the United States is a radical and dangerous one.

Vladimir Putin’s efforts to establish hegemony over Ukraine may now have reached a decisive point both for the balance of power in Central and Eastern Europe and for the NATO alliance. Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko warned on August 30 that Russia’s invasion of his country and extensive aid to pro-Moscow separatists could soon “reach the point of no return,” becoming a generalized conflict. (Snip) Under Obama, however, especially because of his flaccid response to Russia’s slow-motion invasion of Ukraine, NATO has begun to disappear like a sugar cube dissolving in hot tea.

More than half the people passing through U.S. airports now receive preferential security treatment because they pose no clear threat to aviation safety, federal officials say. The shift has significantly reduced the lines at security checkpoints, according to the Transportation Security Administration, reflecting the goal of TSA Administrator John S. Pistole to move away from a “one-size-fits-all” approach to screening passengers. For years, the TSA faced criticism from Congress, the travel industry and fliers for giving the same scrutiny to grandmothers, toddlers, airline pilots, soldiers and other seemingly harmless passengers that

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R) has denied Democrat Chad Taylor’s request to be removed from the Kansas Senate ballot. His Thursday decision means Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) will face three candidates on the ballot this fall — Taylor, independent Greg Orman and libertarian Randall Batson — boosting the vulnerable senator’s reelection prospects. Now, Taylor could siphon off enough anti-Roberts votes from Orman, who’s been surging in the race and is now seen by Democrats as their best shot to take Roberts down, to deliver the senator an opening for a win. Kobach told reporters that, after evaluating state

At his first press briefing after the beheading of American James Foley, President Obama stunned the assembled when he admitted that he had no strategy for confronting ISIS, a.k.a. the Islamic State, in Syria. Yet it was not nearly the most egregious, or consequential, thing he said. Idiotic, yes. You’re the leader of the free world. Even if you don’t have a strategy — indeed, especially if you don’t — you never admit it publicly. However, if Obama is indeed building a larger strategy, an air campaign coordinated with allies on the ground, this does take time. George W. Bush
