Activist groups are applauding an expected Justice Department decision to launch an expansive civil rights investigation into police activities in Ferguson, Mo. Ahead of an official announcement from Attorney General Eric Holder, which could take place as early as Thursday afternoon, civil rights groups are hailing the federal investigation as a major victory for those sharply questioning the circumstances surrounding the mid-August shooting and killing of teenager Michael Brown by a policeman in the St. Louis suburb. "Our Ferguson-area community stood united in the face of injustice and brutal repression by police who were supposed to protect and serve us,”

Awkward. Just a week after President Obama said that he didn’t have a strategy to fight the Islamic State, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin E. Dempsey said that the military has one and it was ordered up by the commander-in-chief. During a Facebook town hall, he said, “At the president’s direction, we have developed a military strategy with a series of options on how we can initially contain, continue to disrupt, and ultimately defeat ISIL.” His comment came after Obama, traveling overseas, tried to explain his “no strategy” statement this week. But in that comment, he specifically said that his

Under President Obama, the richest 10 percent were the only income group of Americans to see their median incomes rise, according to a survey released this week by the Federal Reserve. The Fed data covered the years 2010-2013, during which period Mr. Obama constantly campaigned against income inequality and won re-election by painting his Republican rival as a tool of Wall Street plutocrats. “Data from the 2013 [Survey of Consumer Finances] confirm that the shares of income and wealth held by affluent families are at modern historically high levels,” the report said in noting that the median income fell

Keystone showdown: Battle over pipeline

The national debate on the controversial Keystone XL pipeline will concentrate on Lincoln, Nebraska Friday as that state’s Supreme Court hears arguments in a case examining whether lawmakers short-circuited the regular approval process in an attempt to expedite the pipeline’s construction. The court’s ruling – not expected for several months -- could force President Obama’s hand in making a final decision whether to green light the oft-stalled project. Protests and political outrage have accompanied the proposed pipeline for years, but quieted down in recent months because of the Nebraska litigation and the Obama

Islamic State using Snowden leaks

A former top official at the National Security Agency says the Islamic State terrorist group has “clearly” capitalized on the voluminous leaks from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden and is exploiting the top-secret disclosures to evade U.S. intelligence. Bottom line: Islamic State killers are harder to find because they know how to avoid detection. Chris Inglis was the NSA’s deputy director during Mr. Snowden’s flood of documents to the news media last year. Mr. Snowden disclosed how the agency eavesdrops, including spying on Internet communications such as emails and on the Web’s ubiquitous social media.

Buenos Aires - Gustavo Cerati, who became a megastar in Latin America with his brand of showy, arena-friendly rock ´n´ roll, died on Thursday at 55 after four years in a coma. The Argentine singer and guitarist, who led the band Soda Stereo before a successful solo career, died of respiratory failure, said a doctor at his clinic near Buenos Aires, Gustavo Barbalace. It shows the child - who appears to be less than six months old - lying on its back on the black flag now associated with the group terrorising the Middle East. Where other babies its age might have soft toys scattered around them, the child has been cynically positioned next a Kalashnikov rifle, a pistol and hand grenades.

The man does not have a strategy. [Snip] For over a year, practically on a daily basis, the man who occupies the Oval Office was briefed about the growing threat of a terrorist group which is so brutal that even Al Qaeda has disavowed any connection to it. The man who laid claim to the highest office in the world was told, warned, informed, cautioned, alerted and briefed with precise details about the rise of IS (formerly ISIS or ISIL). The man who has a definite strategy for employing thousands of agents to spy on innocent American citizens doesn’t have a strategy vis-à-vis the butchers of ISIS.

Speaking out publicly for the first time, the three were security operators at the secret CIA annex in Benghazi – in effect, the

DENVER— When he vowed to spend as much as $50 million of his own money, and raise the same from like-minded donors, billionaire Tom Steyer electrified the political world with his promise to make climate change an issue in this year´s midterm elections. Those elections are now two months away, and the former hedge fund manager is running out of time. On pace to raise far less than the widely touted $100 million, his group has a relatively minor presence on the airwaves. Steyer now says his biggest impact this year will be an old-fashioned, get-out-the-vote ground game. "Our strategy

When no one could produce a liquor license, the cops prepared to bust the bartenders and close the clubs, known as Tiki Village and Soca Village. A federal complaint says North Carolina’s regulation of hog farms discriminates against minorities who, disproportionately, endure strong odors and contaminated water. Three groups filed a complaint Wednesday that asks the Environmental Protection Agency to investigate what they say are violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The filing comes nearly 20 years after 25 million gallons of waste burst from an Onslow County hog farm into the New River, focusing public attention on a fast-growing industry. Then and now, manure is washed out of the metal barns where hogs spend their brief lives into open pits called lagoons. Water from the lagoons
