OKLAHOMA CITY - A controversial statement made on Facebook by a state lawmaker has outraged Muslims in Oklahoma. The Islamic community demanded an apology after a state representative posted on Facebook to be "wary of Muslim Americans" and then shared a link about the ISIS brutality in the Middle East. State Rep. John Bennett of Sequoyah wrote the comments on Monday night. Oklahoma´s Council on American-Islamic Relations called on Republican Party leaders to denounce the comments on Wednesday. "I was really disappointed that someone who is elected to represent the people would put something so negative out there,” said Adam Soltani, CAIR-Oklahoma Executive

A self-described “avid reader” of Legal Insurrection has asked us to address the issue of the confidentiality of Mike Brown’s juvenile criminal record (if any), and whether these are likely to be released to the press and public. Disclaimer: Neither I nor Legal Insurrection knows with certainty whether Mike Brown even has a juvenile criminal record, nor (if such exists) what offenses might have been charged or adjudicated in such a record. It appears that early internet claims that Brown’s juvenile record contained a serious felony were in error. The collected information released by various government actors (or refused to

“If we are joined by the international community, we can continue to shrink ISIL´s sphere of influence, its effectiveness, its financing, its military capabilities, to the point where it is a manageable problem...what we´ve got to do is make sure that we are organizing the Arab world, the Middle East, the Muslim world, along with the international community, to isolate this cancer.” - President Obama at a press conference in Estonia this morning. President Barack Obama has struggled to sound convincing in recent days as he addressed the challenge of ISIS--or "ISIL," his preferred acronym for the so-called Islamic State. Obama´s problem goes beyond gaffes about his lack of strategy. The fundamental issue is that he is ambivalent about his role in protecting Americans at home and abroad, and has made the safety of American citizens dependent on other nations´ cooperation. On Aug. 28, when Obama made his infamous "We don´t have a strategy" remark, he also said this: "...in order for us to degrade ISIL over the long term, we´re going to have

The Islamic State has claimed on social media that it is utilizing captured Syrian pilots to learn how to fly stolen jets, according to a CNN Arabic report over the weekend. The Syrian pilots, which are part of the Syrian Armed Forces loyal to president Bashar al-Assad, had been captured after the Islamic State seized Tabqa airbase in Raqqa, Syria. The Islamic State took Tabqa airbase after a four-day battle with the Syrian military. Tabqa is home to a plethora of fighter jets, helicopters, artillery, and large caches of ammunition. It still remains unclear how much quantity of the munitions

Kansas voters have lost a chance to vote for a Democratic senator this fall — and Republicans could pay the price. Chad Taylor’s stunning decision Wednesday to withdraw from the U.S. Senate race forced partisans and analysts to recalculate the potential outcome of the Kansas contest. The consensus: Longtime incumbent Sen. Pat Roberts is in serious trouble, and the GOP’s chances of controlling the Senate could suffer as a result. “It’s extraordinary. It’s stunning. It’s shocking,” said Stu Rothenberg, a nationally known political analyst. Roberts “is still going to be the favorite, but the fact that those of us in

Terror experts fear Libyan fanatics are planning a 9/11 copycat attack after 11 commercial planes were stolen from Tripoli airport. They believe the jets were taken by Islamic militant groups who seized control of the war-torn capital city´s international hub. Analysts say there is "credible intelligence" that they will use next Thursday´s anniversary to fly the planes into high-profile targets. LANSING, Mich.— Michigan´s largest teachers´ union should allow members to resign at any time and stop enforcing an annual one-month opt-out window, a state labor judge ruled, relying on the state´s right-to-work law that took effect last year. The administrative law judge, Julia Stern, recommended Tuesday that the Republican-controlled Employment Relations Commission order the Michigan Education Association to no longer limit school employees to leaving the union in August. She said the right-to-work law incorporated a federal law interpreted to give public employees the ability to leave their union anytime. The state´s largest public-sector union said Thursday that fewer than

Up to 70 veteran USA Today journalists, editors, and others were laid off Wednesday, and reports claim that the newly unemployed were "marched out by security" and within 15 minutes had their email accounts shut off. The layoffs came as no surprise after the Gannett Company followed the lead of many other companies that have already separated and spun off their dying publishing business into separate companies. It was only a few weeks ago that Gannett did the same. USA Today is Gannett´s flagship publication and enjoys the highest circulation of any other American newspaper. Most of the 1,429 unaccompanied minors relocated to North Carolina after they entered the United States illegally were released to host families in Mecklenburg, Durham, and Wake counties, raising health and safety concerns, as well as concerns about increased education costs to local governments. Estimated additional costs to absorb the influx of unaccompanied minors, based on 2012-13 state, federal, and local per-pupil education and capital-expense records, would be more than $7 million for the three counties alone: $4.07 million in Mecklenburg County, $1.79 million in Durham County, and $1.51 million in Wake County.

PRESIDENT OBAMA again appeared to dismiss the conflicts of the Middle East at a fundraiser Friday, saying the region has “been challenging for quite a while” and that “things are much less dangerous now than they were 20 years ago, 25 years ago or 30 years ago.” That may or may not be a valid analytical point, but it is not one the U.S. president should be making, as was brought vividly home when a video apparently depicting the brutal beheading of another American journalist was released Tuesday by the Islamic State. The barbaric murder of Steven J. Sotloff gave Mr.

We read so many stories about this “critical juncture” or that “pivotal moment” in foreign policy that it’s hard to know which to take seriously. “Whither NATO?” has been a hardy if sleepy perennial since the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was founded in 1949. But this time the credibility of NATO, the international order in the Middle East and Europe, and the foreign policy legacy of Barack Obama’s presidency are all genuinely on the line. If that’s not enough, so is the role of the United States in the world. Can we lead anymore? If we can’t lead the NATO

The word of the day is “deliberate.” On Thursday morning, White House Deputy National Security Advisor Tony Blinken said that the Obama administration is seeking to combat the Islamic State threat, as it executes one “terrorist attack” after another against the United States, in a “deliberate” fashion. That’s a far more generous way of confessing to near paralytic dithering. Last week, President Barack Obama admitted that his administration does not “have a strategy yet” for attacking the Islamic State in its Syrian stronghold. Pew said the public has turned away from a dual approach calling for better border security and a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. “The share prioritizing tougher border security and law enforcement has risen since Feb. 2013, early in [President] Obama’s second term,” said Pew. Former top government officials who have been warning Washington about the vulnerability of the nation’s largely unprotected electric grid are raising new fears that troops from the jihadist Islamic State are poised to attack the system, leading to a power crisis that could kill millions. “Inadequate grid security, a porous U.S.-Mexico border, and fragile transmission systems make the electric grid a target for ISIS,” said Peter Pry, one of the nation’s leading experts on the grid. Others joining Pry at a press conference later Wednesday to draw attention to the potential threat said that if just a handful of the nation’s high
