Hillary Clinton basks in Harry

LAS VEGAS — Hillary Clinton’s speech at a clean-energy summit Thursday will allow her to do two things that could help her run for president in 2016: embrace an audience of influential progressive activists and green-industry leaders, while paying tribute to Nevada Democratic kingmaker Harry Reid. At the same time, the controlled format seems tailor-made for avoiding troublesome questions on issues like the Keystone XL pipeline — as well any repeats of the recent flaps in which she criticized President Barack Obama’s foreign policy and spoke about being “dead broke” after leaving the White House. Left wingers are willing to sacrifice the actual interests of the poor in service to their aspirations of political power. A perennial dream of the American progressives is to organize fast food workers into a union, a move that would be an absolute disaster for the intended beneficiaries. Today, a purported 150 cities will see fast food strikes (snip)Oddly enough for people supposedly unable to exist on the wages they receive, there was a purported fast food convention last July that supposedly drew 1,300 people to complain about their low wages. When Texas Gov. Rick Perry was indicted last month on two felony charges stemming from how he dealt with a misbehaving Democratic state official, the image of the stuttering 2012 Republican primary challenger was replaced with that of a hero-cowboy in the eyes of many conservatives. Perry was under attack from the left wing, and his response was not to apologize but to walk through a hail of blue-hued bullets and emerge laughing, without a mark on him. But some conservative true believers have begun to notice something rather suspicious: The company Perry keeps seems more suited to a mainstream

“The South,” professor and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Garry Wills wrote last year in the New York Review of Books, is “the distillation point for all the fugitive extremisms of our time. … It is the home of lost causes and nostalgic lunacy. It is as if the whole continent were tipped upward, so that the scattered crazinesses might slide down to the bottom.” Unfortunately for Mr. Wills, a startling number of his countrymen are apparently scattered crazies. Many Americans, reports show, are moving southward, fleeing liberal states, high taxes, and, most likely, snooty professors. Every few months, like clockwork, a

For someone who entered America´s national life as a bright man who was a Real Good Talker, Barack Obama has slid precipitously, not just in the polls but in public perceptions. Of course, he would never admit it; in fact, he would never comprehend it. But this continuing decline is, in large part, his own fault. Like cake, Obama wants his rhetoric and credibility too. President Obama insists that he still plans to make an executive decision on immigration reform, but his timeline for action grows increasingly convoluted. Obama and his team spent most of the summer previewing his executive action on immigration reform, vowing to fix what they describe as a “broken immigration system” without Congress as soon as possible. "I expect their recommendations before the end of summer, and I intend to adopt those recommendations without further delay," Obama explained in June, referring to a requested proposal from Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.

One day after the Islamic State in Iraq and al Sham (ISIS) released a video showing the brutal beheading of American journalist Steven Sotloff--the second American journalist ISIS has decapitated on video--Secretary of State John Kerry gave a speech saying that Islam is a “peaceful religion based on the dignity of all human beings,” and that ISIS is not “the real face of Islam.” “I want to take advantage of this podium and of this moment to underscore as powerfully as I know how, that the face of Islam is not the butchers who killed Steven Sotloff. That’s ISIL,” Kerry said

The Democratic National Committee chairwoman has found herself in hot water after making controversial statements, comparing the Republican governor of Wisconsin to an abuser. At a round-table discussion on women´s issues in Milwaukee on Wednesday, Debbie Wasserman Schultz ridiculed Gov Scott Walker´s gender policies, saying he gives ´women the back of his hand´. Walker is currently in the middle of heated re-election against Democratic candidate Mary Burke. It´s unclear yet, whether these latest statements by Burke´s party leader will impact the race significantly, in Walker´s favor. After announcing that America “will not be intimidated” by the Islamic State – a bizarre statement from the most powerful man on the planet about a terrorist group he called “jayvee” just a few months ago – Obama explained that America could make ISIS a “manageable problem” if it could mobilize the “international community.” “We know that if we are joined by the international community, we can continue to shrink ISILl´s sphere of influence, its effectiveness, its financing, its military capabilities to the point

His father, founder of the Virgin Group, witnessed the terrifying event. “By the time Sam completed the challenge and reached the summit, he hardly knew where he was,” Richard Branson said on his Web site. “He had a blinding headache and could only briefly look up and take in the

Conservatives are conservative because they’re authoritarian and resistant to new ideas. Everyone knows that, right? There’s a bunch of social-science research that even proves it. If only conservatives were more open and less dogmatically attached to their tribe and their traditions, the world would be a much better place. A lot of smart people endorse some version of this story. And yes, research surveys show that conservatives do express a much stronger affinity for obedience, authority and in-group loyalty than do liberals. But there’s a question those surveys can’t answer: How does what people say translate into what people actually do?

Fast food strikes hit 150 US cities

Thousands of fast food workers across the United States were walking off the job Thursday morning, affecting restaurants in about 150 cities nationwide. It was just the latest in a series of coordinated strikes that have taken place since November 2012, although Thursday’s strike may be the first such action to include large-scale civil disobedience. Organizers would not confirm on the record whether civil disobedience and arrests would take place in any of the cities affected by the strikes, but fast food workers have repeatedly vowed to take whatever measures are necessary in order to win a $15 hourly wage and union

People vote with their pocketbooks. That has pretty much always been true, and it will be true in November 2014. With that in mind, the president has begun to try and convince voters that the Obama economy is working for them. At Milwaukee Laborfest in Wisconsin this past weekend, President Obama spoke about how he and the Democrats believe the American economy has strengthened over the last six years. The president told the crowd that “by almost every measure, the American economy and American workers are better off than when I took office.” That just isn’t true.

It’s all too common: The backers of a broad-based political movement claim their cause is steeped in evidence, but a perusal of the research reveals more hope than substance. The Common Core education standards are a good example. As I noted last week, George Washington University’s compendium of 60+ research papers on Common Core included just two focused on the standards’ impact on student achievement, and the results were mixed at best. The people who developed and validated the Common Core have themselves acknowledged its weak evidence base. That’s clear from an article in the November 2013 issue of the

President Barack Obama’s stated goal in the fight against the Islamic State, aka ISIL, is to reduce it to a “manageable problem.” What this means, he hasn’t spelled out in great specificity. Presumably fewer beheadings. A slower pace of Western recruiting. Fewer genocidal threats against embattled minorities. A downgrading of the caliphate to a mini-state, or merely a large swath of territory in Syria and Iraq. The evil of ISIL has stirred nearly everyone around President Obama to ringing statements of resolve. Vice President Joe Biden says, “We will follow them to the gates of h---.” Secretary of State John

He died peacefully at Sloan Kettering,” and was “surrounded by his loving family,” said the attorney, Martin Flumenbaum. Funeral arrangements for the 48-year-old will be private, he said. Andrew’s brother, Mark Madoff, committed suicide in 2010, on the second anniversary of their father’s arrest. Andrew had battled back lymphoma before, but told People magazine last year that the stress and shame he dealt stemming from his father’s notoriety caused the cancer to

The home-cooked meal has long been romanticized, from ’50s-era sitcoms to the work of star food writer Michael Pollan, who once wrote, “far from oppressing them, the work of cooking approached in the proper spirit offered a kind of fulfillment and deserved an intelligent woman’s attention.” In recent years, the home-cooked meal has increasingly been offered up as the solution to our country´s burgeoning nutrition-related health problems of heart disease and diabetes. But while home-cooked meals are typically healthier than restaurant food, sociologists Sarah Bowen, Sinikka Elliott, and Joslyn Brenton from North Carolina State University argue that the stress that

Thirty-six seats are up for grabs in the Senate and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives will be contested. Of those 36 Senate seats, 15 are currently held by Republicans while 21 are held by Democrats. Clearly, the math is on the Republican side, as is the fact that the incumbent party typically loses seats in mid-term elections. This upcoming November 2014 election is crucial for America and voting for a third party candidate will not achieve the victory. To end the Obama “Rule by Decree” power grab, we have to wrest control of the Senate from the Democrats.

The group, which has captured territory in Syria and Iraq, released a video on Tuesday of Sotloff being beheaded. U.S. officials confirmed its authenticity on Wednesday. President Barack Obama vowed to "degrade and destroy" the group. His aggressive, grandstanding words have been repeated across our airwaves, their Britishness only too obvious, threatening President Obama and other world leaders like a street-corner hoodlum. The 2014 cycle has been an interesting one so far. For example, Republican Senate candidates are normally the ones who end up embarrassing themselves, but not this time. That’s a shocking development in and of itself. Also shocking is the degree to which Democratic Senate candidates and their allies have resorted to absurd attack ads this far out from election day. Senator Mark Begich (D., Alaska) was recently forced to pull an inflammatory ad falsely linking his GOP opponent, former state Attorney General Dan Sullivan, to a gruesome murder, after the victims’ family expressed outrage at not being consulted and accused

The writer played up how men are supposedly a large part of this "tyranny" on "middle-class working mothers:" ...[W]omen find that their very own families present a major obstacle to their desire to provide

But seconds after the officer raised the device to his face, the victim, identified as 35-year-old Sadrettin Saskin, let go and plunged nearly 600-feet to his death,
