Fast food strikes hit 150 US cities
MSNBC, by Ned Resnikoff    Original Article

Thousands of fast food workers across the United States were walking off the job Thursday morning, affecting restaurants in about 150 cities nationwide. It was just the latest in a series of coordinated strikes that have taken place since November 2012, although Thursday’s strike may be the first such action to include large-scale civil disobedience. Organizers would not confirm on the record whether civil disobedience and arrests would take place in any of the cities affected by the strikes, but fast food workers have repeatedly vowed to take whatever measures are necessary in order to win a $15 hourly wage and union

The Obama economy is not

People vote with their pocketbooks. That has pretty much always been true, and it will be true in November 2014. With that in mind, the president has begun to try and convince voters that the Obama economy is working for them. At Milwaukee Laborfest in Wisconsin this past weekend, President Obama spoke about how he and the Democrats believe the American economy has strengthened over the last six years. The president told the crowd that “by almost every measure, the American economy and American workers are better off than when I took office.” That just isn’t true.

It’s all too common: The backers of a broad-based political movement claim their cause is steeped in evidence, but a perusal of the research reveals more hope than substance. The Common Core education standards are a good example. As I noted last week, George Washington University’s compendium of 60+ research papers on Common Core included just two focused on the standards’ impact on student achievement, and the results were mixed at best. The people who developed and validated the Common Core have themselves acknowledged its weak evidence base. That’s clear from an article in the November 2013 issue of the

After President Obama admitted on Thursday that he had "no strategy" for dealing with the ISIS terrorist network, on Wednesday, the network morning shows rushed to portray the aimless commander-in-chief as a tough-talking leader ready to "destroy" the radical killers. At the top of ABC´s Good Morning America, co-host George Stephanopoulos hyped: "President Obama´s tough words to the ISIS terrorists who executed American journalist Steven Sotloff." In the report that followed, correspondent Brian Ross proclaimed: "President Obama vowed that ISIS will pay the price for the murder of a second American journalist. The President delivered fighting words this morning..." [Listen

President Barack Obama’s stated goal in the fight against the Islamic State, aka ISIL, is to reduce it to a “manageable problem.” What this means, he hasn’t spelled out in great specificity. Presumably fewer beheadings. A slower pace of Western recruiting. Fewer genocidal threats against embattled minorities. A downgrading of the caliphate to a mini-state, or merely a large swath of territory in Syria and Iraq. The evil of ISIL has stirred nearly everyone around President Obama to ringing statements of resolve. Vice President Joe Biden says, “We will follow them to the gates of h---.” Secretary of State John

Andrew Madoff, the last surviving son of master scammer Bernard Madoff, died of a blood cancer Wednesday morning, his lawyer said. “Andrew Madoff has lost his courageous battle against mantle cell lymphoma. He died peacefully at Sloan Kettering,” and was “surrounded by his loving family,” said the attorney, Martin Flumenbaum. Funeral arrangements for the 48-year-old will be private, he said. Andrew’s brother, Mark Madoff, committed suicide in 2010, on the second anniversary of their father’s arrest. Andrew had battled back lymphoma before, but told People magazine last year that the stress and shame he dealt stemming from his father’s notoriety caused the cancer to

Let’s Stop Idealizing the

The home-cooked meal has long been romanticized, from ’50s-era sitcoms to the work of star food writer Michael Pollan, who once wrote, “far from oppressing them, the work of cooking approached in the proper spirit offered a kind of fulfillment and deserved an intelligent woman’s attention.” In recent years, the home-cooked meal has increasingly been offered up as the solution to our country´s burgeoning nutrition-related health problems of heart disease and diabetes. But while home-cooked meals are typically healthier than restaurant food, sociologists Sarah Bowen, Sinikka Elliott, and Joslyn Brenton from North Carolina State University argue that the stress that

Thirty-six seats are up for grabs in the Senate and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives will be contested. Of those 36 Senate seats, 15 are currently held by Republicans while 21 are held by Democrats. Clearly, the math is on the Republican side, as is the fact that the incumbent party typically loses seats in mid-term elections. This upcoming November 2014 election is crucial for America and voting for a third party candidate will not achieve the victory. To end the Obama “Rule by Decree” power grab, we have to wrest control of the Senate from the Democrats.

The family and friends of Steven Sotloff, the second American journalist beheaded by Islamic State militants, said on Wednesday he was "a gentle soul", and challenged the group´s leader to a debate on the peaceful teachings of the Muslim holy book, the Koran. The group, which has captured territory in Syria and Iraq, released a video on Tuesday of Sotloff being beheaded. U.S. officials confirmed its authenticity on Wednesday. President Barack Obama vowed to "degrade and destroy" the group. Barak Barfi, a friend of Sotloff who is serving as family spokesman, began a prepared statement from the family in English, remembering

If the rapper known as L Jinny is also the executioner known as Jihadi John, should anyone be surprised? In the past two weeks, a knife-wielding, faceless man in black has become perhaps the most notorious Briton on the planet, the protagonist of two real-life snuff movies as he kills James Foley and Steven Sotloff, American journalists. His aggressive, grandstanding words have been repeated across our airwaves, their Britishness only too obvious, threatening President Obama and other world leaders like a street-corner hoodlum. He does so in the name of his God. L Jinny, aka Abdel-Majed Abdel-Bary, is the man whose name

The 2014 cycle has been an interesting one so far. For example, Republican Senate candidates are normally the ones who end up embarrassing themselves, but not this time. That’s a shocking development in and of itself. Also shocking is the degree to which Democratic Senate candidates and their allies have resorted to absurd attack ads this far out from election day. Senator Mark Begich (D., Alaska) was recently forced to pull an inflammatory ad falsely linking his GOP opponent, former state Attorney General Dan Sullivan, to a gruesome murder, after the victims’ family expressed outrage at not being consulted and accused

Ultra-left-wing blogger Amanda Marcotte targeted an apparent societal "tyranny" in a Wednesday item for Slate: the "burden" that the "home-cooked meal" places on women in particular. Marcotte played up a recent study by a feminist professor and her two colleagues that underlined that "while home-cooked meals are typically healthier than restaurant food...the stress that cooking puts on people, particularly women, may not be worth the trade-off." The writer played up how men are supposedly a large part of this "tyranny" on "middle-class working mothers:" ...[W]omen find that their very own families present a major obstacle to their desire to provide

A selfie-obsessed cop is under fire after appearing to snap photos of himself moments before a suicidal man behind him leapt to his death. A shocking photo taken on Istanbul´s Bosphorus Bridge Monday morning shows the uniformed officer appearing to narcissistically pose for the camera while the troubled man dangerously hangs over the edge. The officer was one of several "highly trained negotiators" dispatched to help the distressed man, said a police spokesman. But seconds after the officer raised the device to his face, the victim, identified as 35-year-old Sadrettin Saskin, let go and plunged nearly 600-feet to his death,

No really. That’s what he said. Secretary of State John Kerry today deployed logic to the effect of, God “created the heavens and the earth” and therefore God wants him to stop global warming and especially to do this to help Muslim countries, which are particularly imperiled. I really don’t know. I just hope Muslims and God appreciate everything he’s doing for them. And if only ISIS could get this message. If only they could get themselves on the State Department press release list, they’d at least read what Kerry has to say, and how he wants to make the desert less

Biologist Mitchell Taylor has studied polar bears and advised governments for more than thirty years, living in the high Arctic for much of that time. “They’ve certainly been around through the last interglacial period,” says Taylor. “During that interglacial it was warmer than it is now: we had pine trees on Baffin Island, deciduous forests north of the Arctic Circle. How Isil doctored the image of Obama,

Isil´s video editors have carefully manipulated colour and screen size to make Barack Obama look as haggard as possible in their recent productions. The two videos disclosing the murders of James Foley and Steven Sotloff display Isil’s mastery of complex editing and animation techniques. Both productions set out to denigrate Mr Obama and present a narrative that blames him for the deaths of the two journalists. Comparing the two videos shows how Isil has improved its techniques – but the terrorist film-makers still remain capable of basic mistakes. The videos share the same structure: they begin with clips of Mr Obama ordering air

Because it gives meaning to life, that’s why. It’s a commonplace to anyone who’s studied the rise of fascism, of which Islamofascism is the most recent variety. The main problem with democratic capitalism is that it’s so successful, and therefore very boring. A generation or two of European intellectuals bemoaned the great triumph of science and industry, which they portrayed as relentlessly stifling the human soul, burying us under a hill of material things. The Germans produced the most moving such literature — think Nietzsche, think Hesse, not accidentally the cult hero of the American revolt against materialism in the 1960s —

Nato, 65 years old this year, represents one of the most successful military alliances in history. It is a triumph of sovereignty pooled on a voluntary basis--without the need for rigid supranational structures. It is the alliance that kept at bay the Soviet Union until it collapsed under the weight of its own failings and contradictions. The result was that millions of people who had lived under oppression in Eastern Europe were able to join the free and democratic world. Nato has also acted to protect those at risk in the Balkans and in Libya, and has led an international coalition

The British way of life is under fresh threat from the EU as it targets the nation´s kettles, toasters and even lawnmowers. Campaigners last night rallied round to vent their fury as Brussels bureaucrats unveiled their latest plan to erode the "lifestyles and choices of ordinary people". It follows the banning this week of vacuum cleaners which have motors above the new EU limit of 1,600 watts in a bid to cut energy usage. The permitted wattage will be almost halved again from September 2017 as the limit is reduced to 900 watts. Dozens of other everyday appliances could have

A former partner warned me off, explaining that they brought lunch to your desk. After years of scratching together my own lunch, I thought that sounded pretty great so I asked what was so terrible about having your lunch brought to you. “They do it,” she said simply, “Because they don’t want you to leave.” She wasn’t kidding. It turns out that providing lunch and other perks at your desk
