Officials have lost track of
50,000 illegal immigrants

More than 50,000 illegal immigrants told to leave the country have been granted a "de-facto amnesty" after officials admitted they have no idea where they are. Mandie Campbell, director general of Immigration Enforcement at the Home Office, said that immigration enforcement officers are not even looking for the individuals because of limited resources. MPs on the Public Accounts Committee described the lack of information about the immigrants as "scary" and "complacent". The Home Office has hired Capita to track down migrants whose application to remain in Britain has been refused but their whereabouts were unknown. Mrs Campbell said that 121,000

THE HAGUE — For two years, Pascal Husting’s employer chartered a jet to shuttle him most weeks between his home in Luxembourg and his office in Amsterdam. Such trips are common for executives at major international corporations in Western Europe. But Mr. Husting isn’t working for a corporation. He is the international program director for Greenpeace, the nonprofit that is arguably the world’s most high-profile environmental advocacy organization. Mr. Husting’s weekly commute prompted a chorus of derision from Greenpeace opponents after “Flygate” was revealed in Dutch media this summer.

“The status quo is unsustainable,” President Obama said of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict soon after taking office in 2009. “The status quo is unsustainable,” then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told AIPAC in March 2010. “The status quo is unsustainable and unacceptable,” United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon averred in 2013. This year, Secretary of State John Kerry, with his customary light touch, informed the Munich Security Conference: “Today’s status quo absolutely, to a certainty, I promise you 100-percent, cannot be maintained. It’s not sustainable.” What is usually meant by this assertion is something quite specific: that in the “occupied territories” of Gaza

Maybe the news that a second American has been beheaded will force President Obama to recognize he has no more compelling priority today than stopping the Islamic State and its bloodletting. In its latest barbarity, ISIS aimed to project American weakness to the world. Just before he beheaded Steven Sotloff, the ISIS executioner explained the butchery this way: I’m back, Obama, and I’m back because of your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State, because of your insistence on continuing your bombings.?.?. So just as your missiles continue to strike our people, our knife will continue to strike the necks of your

Kelli Farr remembers running through a cornfield after getting yelled at by a crowd of Sarah Palin fans. It was 2008, and Farr was working as a campaign tracker—someone employed by an opposing political party to follow a candidate on the campaign trail, documenting his or her every move, in hopes of capturing a slipup. The cornfield incident occurred when Farr was tracking Palin´s 2008 campaign for vice president. "There were many times when the crowd would get pretty angry," Farr told National Journal. "We had to be escorted out of some events for the crowd getting a little angry at the

On June 29, 2014—or the first of Ramadan, 1435, for those who prefer the Islamic calendar to the Gregorian—the leaders of the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) publicly uttered for the first time a word that means little to the average Westerner, but everything to some pious Muslims. The word is “caliph.” ISIS’s proclamation that day formally hacked the last two letters from its acronym (it’s now just “The Islamic State”) and declared Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, born Ibrahim ibn Awwad ibn Ibrahim ibn Ali ibn Muhammad al-Badri al-Samarrai, the Caliph of all Muslims and the Prince of

How Should Christians Expect Our Nation to

Even in the face of jihadist horror, it’s surprising how many Christians are deeply confused about issues of war and peace, with the root of the confusion embedded in the distinction between personal and governmental responsibilities. Admonitions to turn the other cheek, to love our enemies, and to repay good for evil are at core individual responsibilities — responsibilities that not only call on us to imitate Christ’s own example as he forgave his executioners in the midst of his own execution but also relieve us from the terrible and deadly burden of imposing individual justice. But justice is still required.

Friday the Labor Department is expected to report the economy added 230,000 jobs in August. The pace has picked up a bit but is still far less than needed to reemploy all the prime aged workers displaced in the wake of the financial crisis. The jobless rate is down to 6.1 percent but that statistic is deceptive. For example, one in six adult males between the ages of 25 and 54 is not working. Many don´t show up in the unemployment count, because they are not actively looking for a job. They spend their days cluttering park benches or watching ESPN, because

Even for an employed schoolteacher like Narinder, it is hard to find a bride these days. Narinder is a shy, slender 36-year old with a certain anxiety about him -- as if he has resigned to a fate that he is unable to change. He is very polite and at first, reluctant to talk about his situation. Narinder is one of four sons and only one of his brothers has managed to get married. In his district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, there are only 858 girls born for every 1,000 boys, a ratio that doesn´t occur naturally without medical intervention.

WARSAW, Poland -- On the eve of a NATO summit, President Barack Obama gave the alliance´s eastern European members a soaring assurance of protection from any Russian threat. But Poland and the Baltic states are seeking more than lofty words: They want permanent bases with troops on their land. And they probably won´t get that. While the request from Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia will be on the agenda at the summit in Wales, European heavyweight Germany and other members strongly oppose it. They argue that it would violate a 1997 agreement with Russia in which NATO pledges not to

Three Canadians were among the Islamist fighters who help two American journalists hostage in Syria for two years, a new report reveals. [Snip] Citing unnamed sources, the CBC reports that the Canadians forced the men to hand over their bank details, PINs and passwords then drained their accounts of their life savings. The Canadian captors then sadistically wrote emails to Mr Curtis and Mr Schriers´ friends and family claiming to be the men and begged them for their bank details. The militants then preyed on the journalists´ friends and family, as well. Schrier escaped from his al-Nusra Front prison last year after

Much of today’s commentary revolves around the president’s inability to articulate a policy towards ISIS. The president was pressed in Estonia to outline his plans amid multiple crises, especially in the aftermath of Steven Sotloff’s decapitation. (Snip) When you lead from the front, you control the coalition. When you lead from behind, the coalition controls you. This indecision can be disguised under the pose of “sophistication” or “nuance,” where you claim to adapt your behavior to the “context”. But it is really a euphemism for spinelessness. That could mean Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico — also competitors for the lithium-ion battery factory — are out of the running. However, a person familiar with the company´s plans told the Associated Press that a second site would still be prepared, in case Nevada is not able to deliver the incentives it has promised — or possibly to build a second factory. Sharron Townsend is charged with murder in the death of Thomas Trent, who was found dead at a vacant business in the 7400 block of 103rd Street about 7:20 a.m. June 28. Police said Townsend shot Trent one time in the head. Police said Townsend admitted to shooting Trent with a .22-caliber gun. Investigators said Townsend and Trent did not know each other, and the killing appears to be random.

The investigation, which could be announced as early as Thursday afternoon, will be conducted by the Justice Department’s civil rights division and follow a process similar to that used to investigate complaints of profiling and the use of excessive force in other police departments across the country, the officials said.
