After a parade of witnesses testified they saw adults manipulating state exams at one Philadelphia elementary school, a judge on Tuesday ordered four educators to stand trial on multiple cheating charges. Evelyn Cortez, the principal of Cayuga Elementary School, and teachers Jennifer Hughes, Lorraine Vicente and Ary Sloane were all charged by state Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane with forgery, conspiracy, tampering with public records, and other crimes. (Snip) Cayuga´s test scores rose astronomically during the time of the alleged cheating, then plummeted after testing improprieties were first reported and the state imposed strict new testing protocols.

New York — Organizers of the world´s largest St. Patrick´s Day Parade say they´re ending a ban and allowing a gay group to march under its own banner for the first time. The prohibition on identified gay groups in the centuries-old New York parade had made participation a political issue. Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio refused to march this year, and Guinness beer dropped its sponsorship. The parade committee, in a statement made available to The Associated Press, said on Wednesday that OUT@NBCUniversal, a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender support group at the company that broadcasts the parade, would

Democrats look to cook the

I´m not really into the political cannibal thing. And I´m old-fashioned enough to believe that eating humans — even in metaphor — is still a sin. But there´s something unspeakably attractive about the Democrats´ eat-the-rich campaign as they approach the midterm elections in November. President Barack Obama and his crew need to excite their base. And the last things they want to talk about are the lousy job market or his collapsing foreign policy. What´s needed is a distraction. And what could be more distracting than stuffing wealthy non-Democrats into a gigantic pot to sustain and nourish the rest of us?

People seem to be reading into President Obama´s positions on ISIS pretty much whatever they want to see: He´s wise and deliberate. He´s indecisive. He´s so far-sighted that ordinary Americans may be incapable of grasping his intellect. He´s late, as always, inept and clueless about dangerous issues of grave concern to nationwide. As Americans see countrymen beheaded on graphic videos, Obama and his team consistently seek to minimize spreading foreign violence as regional "challenges."

Now that Labor Day has passed, the 2014 campaign season is officially underway. By any measure, the Republicans seem to have the advantage and are poised to take control of the Senate in the midterm elections. The Democrats are struggling on just about every front. They do not have a credible economic agenda, and under President Obama, our country’s foreign policy has gone from bewildering to frightening. Of course, we’ll hear the standard Democratic talking points about increasing the minimum wage, making students loans “more affordable,” legislating equal pay (whatever that means) etc. – all their usual, warmed-over pledges to deliver

In a fresh effort to generate fervor for a far-reaching new global climate agreement, a U.N. agency is releasing videos featuring “imaginary but realistic” weather reports set in 2050, to illustrate the type of extreme conditions it predicts we will face by mid-century. But the first video in the series of 15 to be rolled out over the coming weeks shows some temperatures for 2050 considerably in excess of those projected in the latest major U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report (which has itself been dubbed “too alarmist” by some critics.)

A Briton will be the next hostage murdered by Islamist terrorists, the British extremist known as “Jihadi John” threatened on Tuesday as he beheaded a second American journalist and announced “I’m back”. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) carried out its threat to murder Steven Sotloff, the US citizen who was shown last month in the video of the murder of his fellow American, James Foley. Just as Mr Sotloff appeared as the next potential victim at the end of the Foley video, the British hostage, wearing a Guantánamo Bay-style jumpsuit, is shown on his knees as the

Fox & Friends cohost Elisabeth Hasselbeck claimed Wednesday morning that then-candidate Barack Obama had promised his better “understanding” of Muslims would prevent atrocities like the beheading of American freelance journalist Steven Sotloff by groups like ISIS — something that ain’t working so well, per Hasselbeck. “You look back to 2007, the president alluded to the fact he thought it would change the world once he was inaugurated, that he would be able to understand Muslims and therefore crimes like this would not occur and the world would be safer because he had understanding,” Hasselbeck said. “Well years later, it doesn’t seem

So much for non-ideological foreign policy. When Barack Obama ran for president he vowed to be non-ideological. He was a pragmatist and a problem-solver. It wasn’t just that George W. Bush’s ideology was awful, ideology itself was a kind of sinful stupidity. “What is required,” Obama declared the day before his first inauguration, “is a new declaration of independence, not just in our nation, but in our own lives — from ideology and small thinking, prejudice and bigotry — an appeal not to our easy instincts but to our better angels.” On foreign policy in particular, Obama had been singing this tune

Via Weasel Zippers, we learned the Los Angeles Times has a new term for illegal aliens in the work force: they’re “informal workers,” and that doesn’t mean they don’t arrive on the job in a tuxedo. Times reporter Tiffany Hsu (a "UC Berkeley grad") began her Saturday story with the new I-word (and illegal immigrants also “labored unofficially” in "gray employment"): Informal workers are growing part of California’s economy — a shift keenly felt in the construction industry, where 1 in 6 workers is either off the books or misreported, new research has found. Construction businesses in the state employ roughly 895,000 workers,

Where in the world is Obama’s strategy for dealing with ISIS? Apparently not in Tallinn, Estonia, where the president of the United States contradicted himself this morning on his search for his strategy in dealing with ISIS. First, he said: “The bottom line is this: our objective is clear. That is to degrade and destroy ISIL" (snip)But then, later in the course of his somewhat rambling (that’s a charitable adjective) remarks, he said: "We know that if we are joined by the international community, we can continue to shrink ISIL´s sphere of influence, its effectiveness, its financing, its military capabilities to the point

Amid a Democratic revolt over President Barack Obama’s paralytic approach to the threat posed by the Islamic State, his liberal supporters are mounting a counteroffensive in the press. Obama is not demonstrating blithe unresponsiveness to the inhumanity displayed by ISIS militants in the Middle East’s new fundamentalist caliphate state. He is being “cautious,” quite unlike you-know-who. They do not invoke the name Bush; doing so has become a parodic expression of inadequacy. They do, however, imply that Obama’s thoughtful approach to this nightmare in the Mideast is a welcome change from certain unspecified policies of the past. “He is being

Keep quiet. That’s the message being sent by New York State Board of Elections, which disregarded the First Amendment to enact new “emergency regulations” on political speech that could become permanent at the end of this month. Intended to regulate spending by independent groups during campaign season, the regulations are so expansive that almost anyone, citizen or organization, hoping to have their say on any issue could find themselves in bureaucratic dire straits. Imagine you hear a radio ad where your state representative — let’s call him Fred — claims to oppose higher taxes. But you know that Fred voted three times

Economy: Time was, they had fact-checkers at the White House. They must´ve had the weekend off when President Obama let go a whopper at a Labor Day rally in Milwaukee. ´By almost every measure," he boasted, "the American economy and American workers are better off than when I took office." This must explain why nearly half of American workers believe the U.S. is still in a recession. Sure, the stock market´s done well and employment has picked up, but the most important indicator of their financial situation is whether take-home pay keeps pace with inflation.

Royce, who is a Chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the reason for both the popular support for Israel among the American population, as well as strong bipartisan support in Congress, was Israel´s status as a beacon of democratic values amid a sea of brutality and turmoil in the Middle East. Engel, who is also a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, echoed those sentiments.
