Time for strategy from Obama
on how to deal with ISIS scourge
New York Daily News, by Mike Lupica    Original Article

This time the dead hostage is a 31-year-old freelance journalist named Steven Sotloff, murdered by ISIS in front of the world the way James Foley was. This is a different sort of mass murder, in a world that grows more mad and more dangerous with every news cycle, one innocent at a time. This is a way of using hostages to hold us all hostage. So Foley dies the way he does and Steven Sotloff dies the same way, even after his mother begs the ISIS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, for mercy, and humanity, as if you can somehow find

From Vladimir Putin as International Man of the Year to Kim Jong-Un as Humanitarian of the Year, a tongue-in-cheek list of GQ Awards’ winners has been unveiled. The mocked-up winners’ list, which was posted on Twitter today, appears to have been prompted by Tony Blair’s surprise Philanthropist of the Year award. The former Prime Minister picked up the gong for his efforts in ‘establishing three charities’ at the central London awards ceremony--much to the surprise of the star-studded audience which was said to be ‘muted’ as his name was read out. US president Barack Obama elaborated on America´s response to a second video showing a masked militant cutting the throat of a US captive, during a joint press conference hosted by the Estonian President this morning. The president said he had ordered about 350 more US troops to Baghdad to protect American diplomatic facilities and staff in the Iraqi capital. The move comes after terrorist group Islamic State (also known as Isil) released a second video showing a masked militant with a British accent cutting the throat of a US captive. Overnight, the US lawmakers offered plans to introduce legislation that would

Islamic State beheading of US

The US has confirmed that the video showing the beheading of American journalist Steven Sotloff by Islamic State militants is authentic. Mr Sotloff, 31, was abducted in northern Syria in August 2013. President Barack Obama warned the killers that "our reach is long and justice will be served". [Snip] Mr Obama, speaking in Estonia, said the beheading was a "horrific act of violence and we cannot begin to imagine the agony everyone who loves Steven is feeling right now. Our country grieves with them". He added: "We will not be intimidated. This horrific act only unites us."

What is wrong with me? I can’t seem to work up any kind of outrage over news that nude photos of celebrities such as Jennifer Lawrence and Rihanna were pilfered, possibly from iCloud storage accounts and passed around over the Labor Day weekend on sites, including Perez Hilton, Reddit and 4Chan. I maintain now, and have always maintained, that if you are a celebrity and you make a sex tape, you should not expect it to stay private. If you are a celebrity, and you pose nude for digital photos, you should not expect them to stay private. Especially if

Why Obama Won´t Act on Immigration

For the last several weeks, in Washington and the nation’s immigrant communities, the assumption was that President Obama would circumvent Congress and use his executive power to spare millions of illegal immigrants from deportation by offering them temporary legal status. The assumption was wrong. As I’ve maintained for months, this rumored plan to overhaul the immigration system through an executive order is not going to materialize. Not after the November elections, and not at any point during this administration. The details of exactly what Obama would do and how many people stood to get legal status were unsettled. But the message was

Alaska has the highest rate of residents receiving welfare of any state. The Census Bureau reported Tuesday that almost 7 percent of people in the Frontier State receive public assistance from the federal or state government, more than a percentage point more than the state with the next highest rate. West Coast states lead the rest of the country in the share of residents receiving welfare. More than half a million people got public benefits in California in 2012, the most recent year for which welfare data from the Census´ American Community Survey is available. For the first time in the nation’s history, foreign interests now own more than $6 trillion in U.S. government debt, according to the most recent Treasury Department report on major foreign holders of the debt, which includes the numbers through the end of June. As of the end of June, foreign owners held $6,013,200,000,000 in U.S. Treasury securities, up from $5,976,500,000,000 as of the end of May. Thirteen years ago, at the end of June 2001, the foreign-held U.S. government debt was $983,300,000,000—and had been trending downward for four months. Since then, it has grown more than six-fold. The world is on fire. But don’t go telling that to Secretary of State John Kerry, spending Labor Day on Nantucket, kiteboarding in his stylish bloomers before a late dinner at the Chanticleer. Talk about fiddling while Rome burns. Let them eat … whatever they want, as they can pay for it with their EBT cards. Did you ever think you would live to see the day when the United States would be in grave peril, under attack, and the White House would be treating the crisis as if it were a shortfall of three votes in a farm price-supports bill? Detroit has long been run by criminals. Former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, currently known as prisoner No. 44678-039 in the federal lockup at El Reno, Okla., ran an outright criminal enterprise out of City Hall, and was subsequently convicted on charges ranging from racketeering and extortion to bribery and fraud. He managed to make sewage even dirtier than it is, taking at least $1 million in kickbacks for contracts in the city’s water department. He also signed off on an odd and probably illegal deal to borrow money to make up for city’s habitual underfunding of its pension system, thereby creating

Ukraine deserves support from NATO

AS RUSSIAN soldiers and tanks advance across southeastern Ukraine, the Obama administration and the NATO alliance are making a show of defending several nations that lie far away and that are not presently under attack. President Obama is due Wednesday in the Baltic republic of Estonia, and a NATO summit on Thursday and Friday is expected to approve several measures, including a new rapid-reaction force, to bolster the defenses of Estonia and other Eastern European nations that have joined NATO in the past 15 years. The defensive measures are justified and, if anything, inadequate: NATO still shrinks from scrapping a 17-year-old

A British security expert who worked for aid organizations may be the next ISIS victim. The twisted terrorists behind the beheading of American journalist Steven Sotloff also threatened on camera to execute a British captive identified as David Cawthorne Haines. Haines, whose LinkedIn page shows he was most recently a consultant director for Croatian-based manufacturing company Astraea, was seen at the end of the video clip wearing an orange jumpsuit and held by his collar by an ISIS militant. He was threatened in the video to be beheaded unless America pulls the plug on air strikes against the terrorist network. The video shocked former

Despite the Obama administration’s vow to shift resources, Border Patrol agents say they are still tasked with caring for children who have crossed the border illegally, which is undermining their regular patrol duties of going after gun, drug and human smugglers. An inspector general report finds that the Obama administration has successfully housed the children and has cleared 16 accusations of abuse that the American Civil Liberties Union lodged against U.S. Customs and Border Protection, but says the administration is losing focus on border security. U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske asked for a review after the ACLU and

With the president attending this week´s NATO summit in Wales, and the heightened concerns among the organization’s members – especially the newer ones with experience of hand’s-on Russian domination and rule – it might be profitable for our “allies” to consider some facts reported by Gideon Rachman in the FT: The pattern of Nato spending reflects Europe’s increasing reliance on the US. At the height of the cold war, America accounted for roughly half the military spending of the alliance, with the rest of Nato accounting for the other 50 per cent. Now, however, the US accounts for some 75 per

This is what it looks like in a vacuum: Slaughter. Mayhem. Chaos. This is what it looks like when the Leader of the Free World decides America would be better off if the United States took its hand off the tiller. This is what happens. Two Americans have now been beheaded in professionally produced videos — and between those slaughters, our president announced to the world he doesn’t “have a strategy yet” to go after the group doing the beheading. Forget that Steven Sotloff and James Wright Foley were journalists, which has been the solipsistic focus of the journalists writing about them. What these

Labor Day marks the traditional kickoff to election season, and all Democrats can say for themselves about the coming midterms is: Things look bad, but they could be worse. Republicans will almost certainly gain Senate seats, and could very well take it over, though their chances diminish every time we hear new audio of Mitch McConnell and his GOP cronies sucking up to the Koch brothers at their last retreat. But traditional low midterm Democratic turnout could make McConnell the Senate majority leader in January nonetheless. This political season opens against a backdrop of profound pessimism, captured in an August Wall

On any given weekday in the summer, you will find me walking through fields counting bugs. In fact, it’s my job: I’m an ecologist studying the communities of insects that live in agricultural landscapes. Most days between early June and early September I drive between farms to scout crop pests and the beneficial insects that eat them, changing sticky yellow glue traps and sweeping vegetation with a canvas net. But a single afternoon in August 2006 stands out in memory. Along one of the transects my colleague and I had set up in a cornfield, we noticed that several plants around

Just in time for the season´s final barbecue, President Obama last week backed off his promise (threat?) to "do something" about immigration reform by the end of the summer if Congress failed to send him a bill addressing the issue. He needs more time, we´re told. It´s a dumb and uneventful conclusion to a dumb, uneventful summer in Washington politics. Obama´s promise to rewrite America´s immigration law through a mixture of executive fiat and a kind of officious neglect may have been calculated to incite a GOP freakout, a summer of polarizing impeachment rage, or a self-defeating government shutdown. Tuesday, news broke that the Islamic State had released a “Second Message to America” in the form of an Internet video in which it claimed it had brutally murdered another American journalist, Steven Sotloff.
