Obama on Labor Day:
Don´t take rights for granted

President Barack Obama is asking Americans this Labor Day to think about the rights and benefits that people often take for granted. In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama says he´s optimistic about the growing economy. He says decisions made now will determine whether the recovery will pick up speed. Obama says workers and unions fought for things like Social Security, Medicare, workplace safety laws and the right to organize. He says those fights built a stronger middle class. Obama says to strengthen the modern middle class, the U.S. must raise its minimum wage. He says states and businesses

To live in Tehran, writes British-Iranian journalist Ramita Navai in this collection of true stories, requires one essential skill: lying. “Morals don’t come into it,” Navai writes. “Lying in Tehran is about survival . . . when the truth is shared in Tehran, it is an act of extreme trust or absolute desperation.” “City of Lies” features eight sprawling tales (all names have been changed, as have certain details, and several characters are composites). Each focuses on an individual, but Navai uses these personal stories to observe how people live, love and survive in a society ruled by fundamentalists. Iranian youth

"All aircraft exited the strike areas safely."

Cairo - An Egyptian court sentenced Mohamed Badie, general guide of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, and seven others to life in prison on Saturday for inciting violence during protests last year, judicial sources said. Badie had already been sentenced to death and received a life sentence in other cases, part of Cairo´s toughest crackdown - widely criticised by human rights groups - on the country´s oldest and most organised Islamist movement. The judge, Mohamed Nagi Shehata, also sentenced six other defendants to death in absentia. Badie was charged with killing at least nine people and inciting violence that injured 21 others in

A 35-year veteran of the St. Louis Police Department who’d been assigned to duty in Ferguson suddenly retired this week over a YouTube video, it was reported Saturday as activists conducted another march through the strife-torn town pleading for God “to even the score.” Officer Dan Page’s video, titled “The End of American Sovereignty & Constitutional Rights,” is harshly critical of President Obama, liberal judges, affirmative action, and notes that the Declaration of Independence gives the people the right to overthrow the government. “I personally believe in Jesus Christ as my lord savior, but I’m also a killer. The St. Louis Rams released defensive end Michael Sam on Saturday, the team announced. Sam´s efforts to become the first openly gay player in NFL history came up just short in a competition against undrafted rookie Ethan Westbrooks. Sam had a team-high six tackles in the Rams´ final preseason game but didn´t make the 53-man roster. Westbrooks is one of nine defensive linemen to land a roster spot. Sam officially hit waivers Saturday at 4 p.m. ET when all NFL teams had to trim their rosters down to the league-mandated 53 players. From there, the other 31 teams will have

California´s ´yes means yes´ bill:

California will become the first state to require colleges and universities to set a standard of “affirmative consent” for sexual activity, if a bill passed Thursday is signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown (D). The mantra for rape prevention on college campuses used to be “no means no.” But prevention advocates have been pushing for a shift to “yes means yes.” It’s about “making it clear that the responsibility for sexual violence should be placed on the perpetrator ... and people should have the right to be free from sexual impositions,” says Laura Dunn, a campus rape survivor and legal advocate through the group SurvJustice.

Under the government of deceased President Hugo Chávez, Venezuela used three legal mechanisms available in the United States to lobby and influence on decision making. For such purpose, the nation paid USD 20,722,646. In 1999-2014, state-run oil holding Pdvsa and its subsidiary based in the United States, Citgo Petroleum, have invested USD 4,433,933 and USD 5,483,993 respectively, in lobbying at the US Congress, for a lump sum of USD $9,917,986, according to Openscrets.org, a political liability center, and Sunlight Foundation. A single funeral caused many. Stephen Gire and other health researchers on the ground in Africa had some hope that the Ebola outbreak was coming under control or at least plateauing in late May. Then came the funeral of a healer in Guinea. More than a dozen of the mourners contracted the disease there, probably by washing or touching the body, and took it to Sierra Leone, according to a new genetic mapping of the Ebola virus that scientists hope will help them understand what makes this killer tick. (Snip) Ebola exploded after that funeral and has now killed at least 1,552 people in West Africa. It’s probably more than that, with 40 percent of

A Friday afternoon dispatch at the Politico from Carrie Budoff Brown and Jennifer Epstein tells us that "The White House is putting the finishing touches on a post-Labor Day schedule that will send the president to states where he’s still popular." The list of states where the Politico pair alleges that´s the case is quite short: "Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Illinois and California." That´s it. Kraft Foods Group has announced a recall of 7,691 cases of its popular single-slice American cheese. The food giant says it is ordering the recall of select varieties of regular Kraft American Singles Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product after discovering a supplier apparently did not store an ingredient at the correct temperature. As a result, it says, some of the cheese could have spoiled and cause illness. The recall applies to Kraft American Singles in the 12-, 16- or 24-ounce size if it has a "best when used by" date of Feb. 20, 2015. In the case of the 12-ounce size, the date could also be Feb. 21. Karl Rove and his Crossroads GPS PAC are about to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in the senate -- by campaigning to the left of incumbents Mark Pryor and Kay Hagan on behalf of Republican challengers Tom Cotton and Thom Tills. So blatant is this attempt in the latest round of TV ads that the Washington Post teased Rove with a headline that taunted him as a "bleeding heart liberal." Reporter/blogger Greg Sargent said in the story that the two ad campaigns "show Republicans once again hitting Dems from the left on entitlements." Why We Must Demand

When I say ´demand´ more of British Muslims, I don’t mean ´ask´ more. That isn’t enough. Governments and civil society have been asking for long enough now, yet we still have a frightening lack of cohesion within communities where a large percentage of Muslims live. Nor has it encouraged a tolerant, inclusive attitude amongst huge swathes of Muslims. The soft approach has failed; we have seen a rise in complacency by successive governments who have taken to handling the groundswell of problems involving Muslims in British society with kid gloves. Now it is surely right to be more demanding.

All are places where his brand is not, let’s say, wildly popular. Having just spent a decade working for domestic federal agencies, primarily with fellow Muslims, on topics that include civil rights violations, police surveillance and Transportation Security Administration screening, Zafar knows the deal.

PARIS — Six years after being struck by economic crisis, Europe is facing a fresh downturn, with few new ideas on the table for reigniting growth and deepening political divisions over the austerity policies that many blame for worsening the malaise. Even as the United States economy rebounds from its worst recession since the 1930s, Europe is heading in the opposite direction. A halting recovery that took hold in the 18-nation euro currency bloc in the last year has now gone into reverse as Germany, France and Italy, its three largest economies, stumble anew. You might not have noticed, but Russia has invaded Ukraine. Back in June, I wrote that Ukraine´s military offensive against pro-Russian rebels in the east had a good chance of succeeding--and, if it did, then Vladimir Putin would have to decide whether to rescue his friends or "sit back and watch them be vanquished". Sure enough, Ukraine´s army has gained ground against the insurgents, pushing them back to their strongholds in the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk. And Putin´s response has become clear: he has indeed intervened to save the rebels. Let's be blunt: to all intents and purposes, Russia has now invaded Ukraine.

Sacramento, CA - The California state legislature enacted a ban on plastic grocery bags on Friday near the end of its two-year session, a measure that if signed into law would become the first of its kind in America. A number of cities and counties in California and other U.S. states, including Hawaii's Maui County, have made it illegal for grocery stores to pack purchases in plastic. But at the state level, opposition from plastic bag makers has usually prevailed. The California Senate voted 22-15 for the bill, which must be signed into law by Sept. 30 by Democratic Governor Jerry Brown, who has not signaled a position on the
