Karl Rove and his Crossroads GPS PAC are about to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in the senate -- by campaigning to the left of incumbents Mark Pryor and Kay Hagan on behalf of Republican challengers Tom Cotton and Thom Tills. So blatant is this attempt in the latest round of TV ads that the Washington Post teased Rove with a headline that taunted him as a "bleeding heart liberal." Reporter/blogger Greg Sargent said in the story that the two ad campaigns "show Republicans once again hitting Dems from the left on entitlements." Salon ridiculed the North Carolina ad as the "dumbest of the season" so far, and it was almost

A landscaper from California who claimed to be related to a civil rights leader has been accused of intentionally infecting at least two dozen men with HIV. Spokesman Michael Giorgino said San Diego’s attorney´s office presented the court a complaint Thursday alleging Thomas Miguel Guerra, 29, intentionally infected a man with the virus that can cause AIDS. According to prosecutors, Guerra was on a mission to spread the potentially deadly virus to as many people as possible. Guerra, who also goes by the name Ashton Chavez on the gay dating site Grindr, has pleaded not guilty to a previous count

Why We Must Demand
More of British Muslims

When I say ´demand´ more of British Muslims, I don’t mean ´ask´ more. That isn’t enough. Governments and civil society have been asking for long enough now, yet we still have a frightening lack of cohesion within communities where a large percentage of Muslims live. Nor has it encouraged a tolerant, inclusive attitude amongst huge swathes of Muslims. The soft approach has failed; we have seen a rise in complacency by successive governments who have taken to handling the groundswell of problems involving Muslims in British society with kid gloves. Now it is surely right to be more demanding.

State Department taps
Texas lawyer to serve as

Is there a tougher job description than Shaarik Zafar’s? As the State Department’s new special representative to Muslim communities, the boyish-looking Texas lawyer is America’s ambassador to Muslims around the world during a summer of nonstop grim headlines from Gaza, Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq. All are places where his brand is not, let’s say, wildly popular. Having just spent a decade working for domestic federal agencies, primarily with fellow Muslims, on topics that include civil rights violations, police surveillance and Transportation Security Administration screening, Zafar knows the deal.

A publication produced by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) this week has called for jihadists to launch deadly attacks during Friday prayers so as to avoid harming fellow Muslims. The sickening online magazine also suggests US targets for "lone-wolf" attacks such as New York City´s Times Square and popular Las Vegas casinos and nightclubs. Kamla Negi, a 56-year-old rice farmer and grandmother from a small village in northern India, fought a battle to the death with a wild leopard—and won. She was walking home Sunday when the big cat leapt at her on a quiet path in her village in India’s hilly state of Uttarakhand. “It pounced on me suddenly from the front,” Ms. Negi told The Wall Street Journal in a telephone interview from her bed in an Uttarkhand hospital, where she is recuperating from her ordeal. “Its claws and teeth were on my throat. I could hear it breathing.” Luckily she was

PARIS — Six years after being struck by economic crisis, Europe is facing a fresh downturn, with few new ideas on the table for reigniting growth and deepening political divisions over the austerity policies that many blame for worsening the malaise. Even as the United States economy rebounds from its worst recession since the 1930s, Europe is heading in the opposite direction. A halting recovery that took hold in the 18-nation euro currency bloc in the last year has now gone into reverse as Germany, France and Italy, its three largest economies, stumble anew. Some analysts say the region could

Vladimir Putin´s creeping annexation of

You might not have noticed, but Russia has invaded Ukraine. Back in June, I wrote that Ukraine´s military offensive against pro-Russian rebels in the east had a good chance of succeeding--and, if it did, then Vladimir Putin would have to decide whether to rescue his friends or "sit back and watch them be vanquished". Sure enough, Ukraine´s army has gained ground against the insurgents, pushing them back to their strongholds in the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk. And Putin´s response has become clear: he has indeed intervened to save the rebels. Let's be blunt: to all intents and purposes, Russia has now invaded Ukraine.

Sacramento, CA - The California state legislature enacted a ban on plastic grocery bags on Friday near the end of its two-year session, a measure that if signed into law would become the first of its kind in America. A number of cities and counties in California and other U.S. states, including Hawaii's Maui County, have made it illegal for grocery stores to pack purchases in plastic. But at the state level, opposition from plastic bag makers has usually prevailed. The California Senate voted 22-15 for the bill, which must be signed into law by Sept. 30 by Democratic Governor Jerry Brown, who has not signaled a position on the

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - A time few could imagine during the not-too-distant glory days of casino gambling has arrived in Atlantic City, where two casinos will close this weekend and a third will shut down in two weeks. More than 5,000 workers will lose their jobs in an unprecedented weekend in the seaside gambling resort, leaving many feeling betrayed by a system that once promised stable, well-paying jobs. The Showboat is closing Sunday, followed by Revel on Monday and Tuesday. Trump Plaza is next, closing Sept. 16. To the thousands who will be left behind, it still seems unreal. "We

"They were safely extracted, nearly three dozen of them," a U.N. official told Reuters on condition of anonymity. Other U.N. officials confirmed it. Officials in the Philippines have said all 72 of the trapped Filipino peacekeepers were safe. The U.N. officials said the other Philippine peacekeepers remained trapped by the militants, who have been battling the Syrian army on the Golan Heights.

The childhood home of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is for sale in Manhattan at $44 million. The recently renovated 1929 duplex retains its traditional architecture but has been updated with modern finishes and a contemporary look. The 17-story Art Deco building was designed by architects Arthur Loomis Harmon and Rosario Candela, who made a name for himself designing apartments in New York City in the 1920s. Candela’s name is often associated with luxury buildings and coveted addresses. Onassis’ grandfather, James T. Lee, was the builder. A new study reports one of the biggest potential advances against heart failure in more than a decade — a first-of-a-kind, experimental drug that lowered the chances of death or hospitalization by about 20 percent. Doctors say the Novartis drug - which doesn’t have a name yet - seems like one of those rare, breakthrough therapies that could quickly change care for more than half of the 6 million Americans and 24 million people worldwide with heart failure. “This is a new day” for patients, said Dr. Clyde Yancy, cardiology chief at Northwestern University in Chicago and a former American Heart Association president.

Even the most ardent immigrant rights advocates are saying it: Reform legislation is dead this year — and for the foreseeable future. With that in mind, all eyes have shifted to the White House, where President Obama is weighing unilateral changes to his immigration policies in the face of congressional inaction. In March, the president asked the Department of Homeland Security to review its approach to deportations in search of blanket ways to conduct them "more humanely." With the results of that review – and Obama´s subsequent policy response – expected next month, both sides of the immigration debate are

The extremists who have seized large parts of Syria and Iraq have riveted the world’s attention with their military prowess and unrestrained brutality. But Western intelligence services are also worried about their extraordinary command of seemingly less lethal weapons: state-of-the-art videos, ground images shot from drones and multilingual Twitter messages. ISIS, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, is using every contemporary mode of messaging to recruit fighters, intimidate enemies and promote its claim to have established a caliphate, a unified Muslim state run according to a strict interpretation of Islamic law. Kerry called the Islamist extremist group, known for beheadings, crucifixions and terror campaigns against religious and ethnic minorities, a "unifying threat to a broad array of countries" that needs to be confronted. His article appears in the aftermath of the political uproar that engulfed the White House this week after President Barack Obama said "we don´t have a strategy" on ISIS in Syria. One of the most important tools humanity needs right now is frank speech about Islam. Unfortunately, in journalism, on campuses, and in politics, politically-correct speech codes demonize any analysis of Islam as "Islamophobia." Speech taboos are obeyed across a wide spectrum. In September, 2001, after the 9-11 attacks, President George Bush stated, "Islam is peace." In 2007, his fellow officers declined to take effective action against U.S. Army Major Nidal Hasan, even after he exhibited to them a PowerPoint presentation that cited the Koran to predict and support his subsequent, 2009 shooting of soldiers at Fort Hood.
