Islamist terrorists are "highly likely" to attack the UK as David Cameron announced the threat assessment has been raised to its second highest level. [Snip] At least one plot is known to have already been foiled. The Prime Minsiter warned that the Isil extremists in Iraq and Syria now pose a "greater and deeper threat than anything we have seen before", including Al Qaeda. "In Afghanistan the Taliban were prepared to play host to al Qaida, the terrorist organisation," he said. "With IS we are facing a terrorist organisation not being hosted in a country but seeking to establish and then violently

A cache of emergency weapons — including M16-A4 assault rifles and anti-tank missiles — was delivered Friday to Lebanon from the United States at Lebanon’s request. “This is just the latest in a series of deliveries that have arrived in the last 36 hours,” said U.S. ambassador David Hale from a Beirut air base, the Associated Press reported. The ambassador added that the U.S. has already provided the Lebanese army with 480 anti-tank guided missiles, mortars and over 1,500 M16-A4 rifles. “This aircraft is full, chock-full!” said Antonio Banchs, defense attache to the U.S. embassy, as he inspected a new shipment of weapons, AP reported.

The UK´s terror threat level has been raised from "substantial" to "severe" in response to conflicts in Iraq and Syria, Home Secretary Theresa May says. The new alert level rates the risk of an attack on the UK "highly likely", although Mrs May said there was no evidence to suggest one was "imminent". It is the second highest of five possible UK threat levels. David Cameron promised new legislation would make it easier to take passports from those travelling abroad to fight. The home secretary already has the power, under the Royal Prerogative, to withhold a passport if it is

We still don’t have all the facts about happened in Ferguson, but we can already draw one big lesson. Clearly, something tragic happened during the confrontation on the street that day that left a young man dead and a community in chaos. Certainly, our hearts go out to the family and we can all hope that the investigation into what happened will be swift, thorough and fair to all parties. Already, of course, the shooting of Michael Brown has sparked a much bigger debate on a range of topics, from the state of civil rights in America and community policing methods to the growing militarization of local police forces.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Decades before the television show, a Marine Corps battalion decorated for extensive combat in World War II and Vietnam earned the nickname the "Walking Dead." Now the 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, which also saw action in Iraq and Afghanistan, is being deactivated during a ceremony Friday at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The step comes as top U.S. military and political leaders are moving to trim the size of America´s military after more than a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Marine Corps historians say the battalion appears to have gotten the

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), the chairman of the House select committee on the attacks in Benghazi, Libya, says the panel´s work should be done by the end of 2015, according to a report. "Assuming cooperation from agencies, witnesses and the administration," Gowdy told The New York Times, the committee should have concluded its investigation before 2016. The timeline is relevant because Democrats say the committee is looking to tarnish Hillary Clinton, who was secretary of State during the attacks, and the closer the investigation gets to the presidential election, the more damage it could do. The Benghazi committee made headlines in May,

Sen. Ted Cruz is expanding his political operation, a move sure to stoke speculation that the Texas Republican plans to run for president in 2016. In recent weeks, the Cruz team signed contracts with three Republican consultants with national experience and ties to some of the early presidential primary states. Cruz has cultivated a national following and traveled to the early primary states often since winning his Senate seat in 2012. Yet his political team was relatively small and oriented almost exclusively toward Texas. To help the Tea Party-affiliated senator manage his role as a national leader and prepare for a possible White

The company owned by Jerry Lundergan that is leasing a tour bus to the U.S. Senate campaign of his daughter, Alison Lundergan Grimes, does not appear to have the proper permits required to operate the charter bus. Grimes´ campaign tour bus has come under scrutiny in the last two weeks since Politico ran a story suggesting that the campaign paid less than the market rate to charter the bus, which if true would violate federal campaign finance law. The revelation that the bus itself could be operating outside the law keeps alive a story that has some focused more on Grimes´ mode

We don´t have a strategy yet to attack Islamic State. But they are developing a strategy to attack us. A laptop found by Syrian rebels last January in an ISIS hideout proved to be a goldmine of information. Foreign Policy´s Harald Doornbos and Jenan Moussa got their hands on the machine, downloaded 146 gigabytes of material, and were shocked at what they found: The laptop´s contents turn out to be a treasure trove of documents that provide ideological justifications for jihadi organizations -- and practical training on how to carry out the Islamic State´s deadly campaigns. They include videos of Osama bin

A large majority of Americans think the world is a more dangerous place than it was several years ago. And a terrorist group that was not even on the public’s radar a year ago – the Islamic militants known as ISIS or ISIL – today ranks near the top of its list of U.S. security threats. As the public’s views of global threats have changed, so too have opinions about America’s role in solving world problems. On balance, more continue to think the United States does too much, rather than too little, to help solve world problems. But the share saying

The White House is insisting the U.S. is not at war with the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, despite an aggressive air campaign and previously labeling the jihadist group an "imminent threat to every interest we have." "Before getting into the strategy, though, there seems [to be] a fundamental, existential question: Is the United States presently at war with ISIS — yes or no?" MSNBC host Chris Hayes asked President Barack Obama´s top spokesman, White House press secretary Josh Earnest, on Thursday. Earnest went with "no." "No, Chris. DES MOINES — Ben Carson sees bullies everywhere. Maybe that’s what happens after years of being walloped by stronger kids, and ridiculed by the smarter ones at his inner-city schools in Boston and Detroit. The bullying is central to the stories Carson tells about himself. Onstage here today in Iowa, where all presidential campaigns begin, he starts with a tale about studying hard enough to best his tormentors. “I went from the bottom of the class to the top of the class, much to the consternation of the students who called me ‘dummy,’ ” he says with a grin. “Now

THREE RIVERS, Tex. — Whenever overseas turmoil has pushed energy prices higher in the past, John and Beth Hughes have curbed their driving by eating at home more and shopping locally. (snip) “We were able to take a day-cation because of the lower gas prices,” said Ms. Hughes. The reason for the improved economics of road travel can be found 10,000 feet below the ground here, where the South Texas Eagle Ford shale is providing more than a million new barrels of oil supplies to the world market every day. United States refinery production in recent weeks reached record highs and left supply depots flush, cushioning the impact of all the instability surrounding traditional global oil fields.

There have been several reports of American citizens joining (and even dying for) ISIS, and now a man in Chicago was arrested this week after waving an ISIS flag out the window of his car and threatening to detonate a bomb when the police tried to inspect the vehicle. A resident called police upon seeing Emad Karakrah with the ISIS flag hanging out of his car. When police responded, Karakrah drove off, and made it through several red lights before being pulled over. And then, as he was being arrested, Karakrah reportedly made a serious threat. A growing number of Americans say they believe the U.S. Department of Justice is motivated primarily by political interests and not by the pursuit of the truth, according to a survey from Rasmussen Reports. The poll, which was conducted on Aug. 26-27 and contains a sampling margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points, found that only 38 percent of U.S. voters hold a favorable opinion of the department headed by Attorney General Eric Holder, while a much larger 53 percent hold an unfavorable opinion. Further, of these respondents, only nine percent hold a “very favorable” opinion, while 26
