"Poisonous Idealogy" Behind Terror Threat

David Cameron has said the root cause of an increased terror threat to the UK is a "poisonous ideology of Islamist extremism". The UK terror threat level was raised to severe from substantial on Friday, meaning a terrorist attack on the UK is "highly likely". At a news conference in Downing Street, Mr Cameron said the Iraq war in 2004 was not to blame for the rise of Islamic State (IS), which has seized swathes of territory across Iraq and Syria to form an "Islamic caliphate" and carried out beheadings and mass killings.

After this week’s dreary news out of Kansas, we owe Hot Air readers a pleasant surprise, and this may be it. Martha Coakley, who lost a special election to fill the Senate seat vacated by the death of Ted Kennedy four years ago despite the near-total grip Democrats have on Massachusetts, may be in the process of losing another election. Republican gubernatorial nominee Charlie Baker took his first lead in the Boston Globe poll series, edging Coakley barely, while neither candidate looks to be catching fire: Republican Charlie Baker has edged ahead of Democrat Martha Coakley in the race for governor,

Why Obama Backed Off More ISIS

After lots of bluster about striking ISIS on Syria, President Obama threw cold water on the idea, disappointing those who wanted him to broaden the war. After a week of talk of eliminating the "cancer" of ISIS, President Obama said Thursday that he was not planning to significantly expand the war against the Islamic extremist movement anytime soon. His remarks came after days of heated debate inside the top levels of his own national security bureaucracy about how, where, and whether to strike ISIS in Syria. But those deliberations – which included a bleak intelligence assessment of America´s potential allies

In 1978, Star Wars won seven Academy Awards. But if you want to watch that original version, the first of George Lucas’s soon to be seven-part saga, you’ll find it difficult. In fact, it’s actually impossible to buy an official copy of Star Wars as it was first released. Lucas doesn’t want you to see that version. Instead, he wants you to watch the continuously updated special editions—movies with added CGI, changed sound effects, and whole new scenes. According to some fans, every element that prompted the Academy to recognize the original Star Wars has been changed in these new versions.

With Barack Obama now firmly in place as their ex officio leader, the United Nations pooh-bahs have come up with a surefire way to stick it to the taxpayers of the world, while feathering their nests for all time. It’s called making global warming/climate change a health issue at their very next summit in November 2015. Christiana Figueres, the top UN climate official, said upcoming negotiations on an international global warming accord should be viewed as a health issue. “The logic behind the comment from Christiana Figueres, the U.N. climate chief, is that older, dirtier forms of energy are likely the first to

When Republican Rep. Jeb Hensarling sat down with colleagues and constituents at a recent Chamber of Commerce lunch in Dallas, the first question he faced was whether Congress planned to address immigration policy and a burgeoning border crisis. "I´m supposed to do this in 30 seconds?" he joked, noting the issue´s complexity. While he was optimistic about long-term prospects for dealing with border security and immigration, he said, "between now and the end of this Congress, I´m a little less sanguine about it." It has been a question heard repeatedly by lawmakers this month in "town hall" district meetings punctuated - and

"I appreciate the opportunity to come on your show and explain" what the President Obama meant on Thursday, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told MSNBC´s "Morning Joe" on Friday. Earnest said President Obama may not have a strategy for "what we could do militarily in Syria," but "when it comes to confronting ISIL, the president´s made very clear that we do have a comprehensive strategy for confronting ISIL." That "comprehensive strategy" includes support for an inclusive Iraqi government; training and equipment for Iraqi and Kurdish security forces; and "engaging regional governments." It also includes U.S. military strikes in Iraq to

On Thursday, President Obama held a press conference in which he humiliated himself entirely on the question of America’s handling of the terror group ISIS. Explaining that he had to consult Congress and check the pulse of Americans, Obama stated, “I don’t want to put the cart before the horse. We don’t have a strategy yet.” Which begs the question: what the hell does this guy do for a living? ISIS has been on the move since April 2013, when Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi announced that ISIS was moving into Iraq as well as Syria. On June 29, 2014, ISIS announced

A violent father-of-two escaped deportation moments before being put on a plane to Jamaica – by suddenly declaring he was homosexual. Alvin Brissett, 55, was ordered to be sent back to his Jamaican homeland after building up a long criminal record including thefts, drug possession, and assaults. Yet at the last moment, while he was in handcuffs in a van at Gatwick airport, he announced that he was gay and claimed he could not be sent to Jamaica because he could face discrimination there. This claim halted his deportation in its tracks. And even though a hearing subsequently ruled it

President Obama gave the most amazing news conference Thursday. He´d hoped to highlight mildly encouraging news on the economy, which he says is Americans´ top priority. But Obama´s current JV communications strategists should have known that was futile, given the winds of war blowing and exploding around the world. Syria, Iraq, Ukraine, ISIS, China all underscoring the perceived weakness and inaction of the American leader who so badly wants his mere words to sway events. Obama says the Muslim extremists, whose barbarism brings a whole new meaning to the word 'extremists," do not belong in the 21st century.

Arlington fire officials say one man was killed and another critically injured in an explosion at a residential garage while they were tampering with illegal consumer-grade fireworks. Firefighters were called to a home on the 6100 block of Hedgeapple Court at about 11 p.m. Thursday after several reports of an explosion were received, some from as far away as three blocks. Within minutes of the first report Arlington firefighters arrived at the home and found a 23-year-old man on the lawn suffering from severe burns. Firefighters located another man, later identified as 24-year-old Jared Backus, inside the garage deceased.

Do not be fooled by Hillary Clinton’s attempt to rehabilitate her term as Secretary of State ahead of the 2016 presidential election. From 2009 to 2013, Clinton embodied U.S. foreign affairs even as President Obama’s avowed policy of self-effacement descended into listless, desultory abdication. Notwithstanding her recent critiques of Obama’s performance, Clinton’s failures as Secretary of State helped bring war to Europe, an arms race to Asia, and inferno to the Middle-East. The U.S. and its international standing are weaker for Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State. Clinton’s mistakes began early, with her contribution to the misconceived and poorly executed

By now, President Obama´s remark that "We don´t have a strategy yet" has made the rounds. Republicans were quick to pounce on it, as well they should have. But while the White House went into damage-control mode, emphasizing that it was a reference to the lack of decisions about increasing military action in Iraq and/or Syria and not a lack of a broader strategy there, the damage was already done. As with all gaffes, the worst ones are the ones that confirm people´s pre-existing suspicions or fit into an easy narrative. That´s why "47 percent" stung Mitt Romney so much, and its

One afternoon, a heavily tattooed fellow inmate with the faintest hint of a mohawk and a secret connection to an endless supply of chocolate milk was returning to the barracks from his job milking cows at the prison farm. In a fit of bonhomie and thinking I might score myself a carton or two, I called out to him in greeting. President Barack Obama tried to get himself a bit more political space Thursday to make a decision about whether to expand the U.S military campaign against Islamic militants in Iraq and Syria, but in so doing he may have dealt himself a significant political blow by suggesting that his policy on the issue is adrift. “We don’t have a strategy yet,” Obama said as he took questions from reporters in the White House briefing room. The president’s aim was clearly to defuse building expectations that U.S. military strikes in Syria were imminent as part of a broadening drive to defeat the

The former Army psychiatrist who killed 13 people in the 2009 shooting spree at Fort Hood has said it would be ´an honor´ to join the caliphate in a letter to ISIS, it has been reported. Nidal Hasan has apparently requested to be made a ´citizen soldier´ of the caliphate in the letter to Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Hasan opened fire on his fellow servicemen and women on November 5, killing 13 and injuring 30 others. He was shot and paralyzed from the waist down in the resulting gunfire and was sentenced to death last year. Earlier this year FBI Director

Let’s cut President Obama some slack. Golf is a challenging game, and he has been focused like a laser (as Bill Clinton used to say) on improving his game on Martha’s Vineyard, and there’s only so much a guy can do. Coming up with a strategy for dealing with guys who are the junior varsity can wait – and after all there are three fundraisers and a wedding beckoning this holiday weekend, so what’s the hurry? Unfortunately for any residual desire of President Obama’s desire to be seen as a serous leader, the above sarcastic apologia fits his pattern of behavior

Omar Jamal, former head of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center and a longtime Somali activist in Minneapolis, said he showed the photos to a person acquainted with Abdirahmaan Muhumed, and that person felt sure it was Muhumed. Jamal cautioned however that he, himself, could not say for certain whether the dead soldier pictured was Muhumed. “People are saying it’s him, but I don’t know for sure,” Jamal said.
