We´ve been focusing a lot on President Obama´s foreign policy, from Ukraine to Libya to Syria to Iraq to Israel and Iran. However, get ready for ObamaCare to make a return engagement to our front pages, and politics as well. Sally Pipes posted some numbers yesterday that won´t make Democrats happy, especially those in tight elections: "Get readyto pay more for health insurance next year, compliments of Obamacare. A new analysis from PricewaterhouseCoopers projects that average premiums for policies sold through Obamacare’s exchanges will increase 7.5 percent in 2015.

DALLAS— The number of Texas cities that could be served by high-speed rail is growing quickly and now includes Bryan-College Station, an area best known as the home of Texas A&M University that was bypassed by the interstate highway system. High-speed-rail advocates stepped up their efforts Wednesday to bring bullet trains to Texas as early as 2021. A commission set up to oversee a proposed connection between Dallas and Fort Worth unanimously agreed to seek federal funding to also study a Fort Worth-Austin connection. One after another, public officials at the Commission for High-Speed Rail in Dallas/Fort Worth meeting at

A man convicted of the brutal killing of his ex-girlfriend and hiding her body in a locked closet for years has been turned down in an effort to get the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to consider his case. The court today declined to take up a lower appeals court ruling earlier this year, leaving in place Ira Einhorn´s conviction for the 1977 murder of Holly Maddux in Philadelphia. Einhorn fled the country and spent nearly 17 years hiding in Europe before being returned to the United States and convicted in 2002. In February, a Superior Court judge said a "vast and

A second American reportedly killed while fighting for the Islamic State in Syria was today identified as a father-of-nine from Minneapolis who had vowed to ´give up this worldly life for Allah´. Abdirahmaan Muhumed, 29, is believed to have died last week in the same battle as U.S. rapper Douglas McArthur McCain, who grew up in the same city. Two sources have confirmed Muhumed´s identity and said a picture of his body had been sent to his family from Syria, according to Fox News. State Department spokesman Jen Psaki said the U.S. has no independent confirmation of the reports, but

An interesting development in the story of Douglas McAruhur McCain, the American jihadi who was killed this week in Syria, is that he was classmates with another young American who was killed while fighting with an Al Qaeda affiliate in Somalia in 2009. Tory Kastigar was a friend and classmate of McCain at Robinsdale Cooper High School in the Twin Cities in Minnesota. The principal at the high school at the time they attended doesn’t remember them but since they “had pretty normal kids” he could only think that they were subject to “influences” beyond the high school and the

Sources tell Fox 9 News a second Minnesota family has received word that a man who left the Twin Cities has died fighting with the terror group ISIS in Syria. At about 9 p.m. on Wednesday, leaders in the Somali-American community heard that State Department officials notified a Minneapolis family that a second American was found among the dead militants. According to Fox 9 sources, Abdiraaman Muhumed -- who was the focus of an MPR story just two months ago -- died in the same battle as Douglas McCain, a former Robbinsdale-Cooper High School student. Eric Holder´s Justice Department is coming under pressure to order sweeping changes to police operations in the United States. Civil rights and community groups, as well as some lawmakers, are pushing the attorney general to take action to address racial and social problems that they say were exposed by the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. “We’re at our zero moment as a nation,” said Maya Rockeymoore, president and CEO of the Center for Global Policy Solutions, a community-empowerment group. “If we continue to let this go unaddressed, we’re going to have Fergusons springing up all across the country.”

The American Sociological Association, the leading professional organization for American sociologists, is now granting its members much greater leeway in how to define their gender identities. Previously, the ASA’s membership surveys only allowed three choices of gender: “male,” “female” and “prefer not to answer.” Now, as reported at Inside Higher Ed, members will have no fewer than seven options for their gender choice, with the added ability to select “all that apply.” The added options include “transgender male/transgender man,” “transgender female/transgender woman,” “genderqueer/gender non-conforming,” or another “preferred identity” of their choice not explicitly named. “Genderqueer” is defined by the Gender

Syrian rebels have reportedly taken UN personnel prisoner after they took over the area near the Kuneitra border crossing on the Golan Heights. The UN personnel were stationed on the Syrian side of the border. No confirmation of the story has been issued, and the number of those taken prisoner is also unclear, with some reports saying that “dozens” of personnel have been captured. The reports identified the kidnappers as being members of a group close to Al Qaeda that is fighting soldiers of the regime of Bashar al-Assad. Syrian officials said that they had managed to wrest control of the village

The primary objection of those favoring separation is the lack of self-determination granted to Scots by the British government. Though Westminster in recent months has devolved more powers to Edinburgh, those favoring separation say it is

I feel confident in saying that most Americans are disgusted by the perfectly legal practice of U.S. companies avoiding taxes by incorporating in another country. So why does it take a whopper of a story to get the media to pay attention? Burger King, as you know, is moving to buy the Canadian chain Tim Hortons, and this is more about dollars than doughnuts. The hamburger giant plans to move its headquarters to Canada, thereby slashing its Treasury tax bill. The White House doesn’t like it. Democrats don’t like it. The Republicans don’t like it. RICHMOND, Va. — Lawyers defending Maureen McDonnell at her and her husband’s corruption trial presented a portrait of the former first lady of Virginia that was embarrassing and at times even humiliating. Ms. McDonnell, whose defense began and rested on Wednesday, was described as hiding purchases from her husband, former Gov. Bob McDonnell, when the family was financially stressed early in his career; exploding in anger at her husband while he sought in vain to mollify her; and, ultimately, turning to a wealthy nutritional supplement executive to fill an emotional void in her life. The oldest of the McDonnells’ five children,

What do you think? Do you think if I write a thought-provoking, probingly-artistic contemporary opera on the subject of Michael Brown’s untimely shooting, it will be met with critical acclaim? [Snip] You remember Leon Klinghofer, don’t you? He was the 69-year-old Jewish man who, in 1985, was pushed off the cruise ship Achille Lauro to his death by Palestinian terrorists. Pushed into the water in his wheelchair. Because he was Jewish. The opera portrays this murder as justified, not only because of Palestinian grievances against Israel, but also by the alleged evil and exploitative actions of Jews against others around

Earlier this year, 21 schools in Birmingham were investigated over an alleged takeover by Islamist extremists. Subsequent reports found that a small group of individuals had tried to impose a strict interpretation of Islam on the

The rebel successes constitute the opening of a new front in the conflict. Mr Poroshenko said he was calling a meeting of the Ukrainian security council. He added that Ukraine would initiate an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council to discuss

Kirkus Reviews said it was “a well-researched story” revealing the “profoundly unethical behavior of the medical and mental health professionals who dealt with [Monroe].” The popular Canadian magazine Maclean’s praised Heymann’s research, finding “his sources

On Friday, Obama will be feted at the home of one of his top bundlers, 32 Advisors’ Robert Wolf, in the aptly-named Purchase, NY, with 250 high-rollers paying up to $32,000 each to bend Obama’s ear. The end result of all of this is that if we measure poverty in the US the same way that the World Bank does for the world then there’s actually no poor people at all inside the United States. That War on Poverty has been fought and we who would aid the poor won. It should be said though that the definitions of poverty used are not

Bad memories of past trauma can leave people emotionally scarred for life. But now neuroscientists believe they can erase feelings of fear or anxiety attached to stressful events, in a breakthrough which could help treat depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. Researchers at MIT, US, have discovered which brain circuits attach emotions to memories, and crucially, how to reverse the link. They managed to ‘switch off’ feelings of fear in mice which had been conditioned to feel anxious. It is likely the same technique could be used in humans. “In our day to day lives we encounter a variety of events and episodes that give

Ever since Ronald Reagan the warmonger landed in Washington (or since George McGovern said "Come home, America") liberals longed for a foreign policy president who was up to their standards, was as "thoughtful" as they were, and understood all their dreams. Someone who knew that talk of evil and good was always sophomoric, that the resort to force always was counterproductive, and that the crazy idea that this country was special — promoted by yahoos like Abraham Lincoln — was better described by their own Michael Kinsley as just another excuse to break rules. Came the dawn and they got him,
