A Look at the Islamic

BEIRUT -- As the U.S. strikes Islamic State targets in Iraq, extremists belonging to the same militant group across the border in Syria are capturing new territory and becoming bolder by the day. There, in its power base, the Islamic State group controls thousands of square kilometers (miles) of territory, including most of Syria´s oil-producing region. In the areas under its control, it has established an elaborate governing system that oversees every aspect of people´s lives. The U.S. has begun surveillance flights over Syria as a possible precursor for airstrikes against Islamic State targets there. U.S. Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of

Amos Gilad, the former IDF general who was a member of the Israeli negotiating team that worked on the Gaza ceasefire, said Thursday that the indirect negotiation process between Israel and Hamas was one of the most “tiring” experiences he had ever been through. “You sit for hours in a room, waiting for the minor changes made by either Hamas or the Egyptians to the agreement, many of them designed to trick you into making a bad deal,” Gilad said of the process. Negotiations took place in a Gaza hotel, with Israeli and Hamas terror officials sequestered in different rooms. Egyptian

The mystery over the air strikes in Libya’s capital appears to have been cleared up. US officials say that the military jets which bombed targets in Tripoli last week were from the air forces of Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). [Snip] There are many important aspects to this affair, not least the sobering fact that air strikes can take place in Libya’s capital without anyone really knowing who was responsible. If that is not compelling evidence of Libya’s descent into a failed state, then I don’t know what is. But there is something else worth noting. Egypt and the

Donetsk, Ukraine - Determined to preserve the pro-Russian revolt in eastern Ukraine, Russia reinforced what Western and Ukrainian officials described as a stealth invasion on Wednesday, sending armored troops across the border as it expanded the conflict to a new section of Ukrainian territory. (Snip) Russia, which has denied it is helping the insurgents, did not acknowledge the military movements. But the Russians have signaled that they would not countenance a defeat of an insurgency in the heavily Russian eastern part of Ukraine, which would amount to a significant domestic political setback for President Vladimir V. Immigration judges´ union

Washington - The federal immigration court system should be separated from the Justice Department and operated independently of federal law enforcement, the top two leaders of the immigration judges´ union said Wednesday. Judge Dana Leigh Marks, president of the National Association of Immigration Judges, said immigration judges act as arbiters in deportation cases being argued by Homeland Security Department lawyers but judges also are treated as attorneys for the government. As employees of DOJ´s Executive Office for Immigration Review, Marks said, the judges´ dual roles can potentially blur the lines for judges

Brownsville, TX - A federal judge in Texas denied Wednesday a conservative activist´s request for an emergency stay to stop the government from transporting immigrants who entered the country illegally in South Texas to other states or releasing them on their own recognizance. In a complaint filed in July, Orly Taitz argued that by sending immigrant children and families to various states while South Texas was overwhelmed by an immigration surge, the U.S. government created a public health risk. She called for a two-month quarantine and medical screening for all immigrants detained after entering the country.

Canberra - The hunt for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 will focus on the southern part of the existing search zone after a new clue to the plane´s possible location emerged, Australia said on Thursday. Fresh information suggested the jet "may have turned south" earlier than thought, Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said. The detail came to light following "further refinement" of satellite data and as investigators attempted to map the plane´s position during a failed attempt to contact it earlier in its flight path. "The search area remains the same, but some of the information that we now have suggests to us

Tuesday, Sept. 2, post Labor Day, David Muir becomes ABC-TV’s “World News” anchor. The network’s made noises about his “tremendous intellect, unwavering work ethic, competitive drive, laserlike focus” blaah blaah. A pro, the guy’s paid his dues under rough circumstances. Also he’s gorgeous. Great hair. Perfect sideburns. Why replace triple-A Diane Sawyer? Because he’s 40, and she isn’t. TV brass would appreciate Rembrandt more today if he were 23 and schmearing a canvas in Soho. David “watched news at home at 12, wrote about it at 13 and, even when they drove me to school, excused myself to watch Peter Jennings.

New York - The FBI is investigating whether Russian hackers staged a cyber-attack on major Wall Street businesses this month in retaliation for US sanctions imposed over Ukraine, Bloomberg News reported last night. The Russian hackers allegedly stole large amounts of sensitive data from JP Morgan Chase and at least one other bank, according to sources familiar with the investigation. The FBI is also reportedly looking into possible links to recent hacking of large European financial institutions. The sophistication of the attacks appeared to be beyond the capability of normal criminal hackers, according to Bloomberg.

As cousins Richard Norris and James Norris watched, a light wind began moving huge floes of ice across the surface of the water and into rocks weighing up to 200 pounds. Propelled by the ice masses, the rocks began to slide across the slick, muddy bottom of the normally dry lake bed, known as the Racetrack playa. If you’re waiting for President Obama to pull a Walgreen (WAG) on Burger King (BKW), you’re probably one pickle short of a whopper. Because it ain’t happening. By now you’ve heard that Burger King has just scooped up Canadian coffee-and-doughnut giant Tim Hortons in a roughly $11 billion deal, and will move its headquarters there. BK’s CEO insists the deal won’t save much on taxes – the company presently pays an adjusted tax rate of about 27%, which is about the prevailing tax rate in Canada. Others dispute that math, since Canada provides many more tax incentives and loopholes that

It was a small reminder of the infamous walk the pair took nearly a year ago when Obama decided to go to Congress for permission to bomb Syria. That proposition turned out badly: congressional support cratered and Obama was left to scramble a diplomatic solution. On a gorgeous Monday evening nearly a year later, the pair in their shirtsleeves could have been discussing almost the same dilemma: How does Obama continue to bomb

President Obama is promising to reform veterans’ health care and restore “dignity” to the system, the Veterans Affairs office in Philadelphia is apologizing for depicting dissatisfied veterans as Oscar the Grouch in an internal training guide. The training guide also described veterans as possibly having unrealistic expectations, and advises staffers to apologize for the public “perception” of the scandal-ridden agency. America’s newest federal agency, charged with regulating financial institutions to prevent another hostile economic downturn, is having troubles regulating hostilities and discrimination among its own employees. Evidence gathered by congressional investigators, internal agency documents and Washington Times interviews with workers discloses scores of cases of U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau employees seeking protection from racially offensive, sexist or discriminatory behavior, including that: • A naturalized U.S. citizen, with more than a decade of service with the U.S. government, was called an “f’ing foreigner” by management. • A department was internally dubbed “the Plantation” because of the number of blacks working

Both political parties are in a state of high anxiety about the possibility that President Obama will allow millions of illegal immigrants to remain in the country, fearing that White House action on the issue could change the course of November’s midterm elections. In the past few days, Democratic candidates in nearly every closely fought Senate race have criticized the idea of aggressive action by Obama. Some strategists say privately that it would signal that he has written off the Democrats’ prospects for retaining control of the chamber, deciding to focus on securing his legacy instead. Senior Republicans, meanwhile, have

The U.S. government has upped the quantity of marijuana it’s growing this year, to more than 1,400 pounds from the originally planned 46. The federal government classifies marijuana as a substance that has no medical use and is more dangerous than cocaine. But it’s willing to let researchers have access — under a few conditions. One condition is that each project needs approval from the Drug Enforcement Administration. Another is that researchers get the substance from a particular source: the federal government.
