Ice cream magnate and State Treasurer Doug Ducey has won the Republican primary to stand for the next governor of Arizona, one of four states where voters were choosing candidates for statewide office. Ducey, who started Cold Stone Creamery in Arizona and built it into a national brand before selling the company in 2007, won the primary following a campaign focusing on his blend of government and business experience. He has been state treasurer for the last four years, serving as the chief steward of Arizona´s finances during a period that included the collapse of the housing market in the

Mitt Romney has repeatedly stated that he will not run in the 2016 presidential election, but his most recent comments suggest he may be leaving the door slightly open for another run at the White House. During a radio interview yesterday on “The Hugh Hewitt Show,” Romney responded to more questions about his possible candidacy by saying, “I know you’re going to press, but you know, this is something we gave a lot of thought to when early on I decided we’re not going to be running this time.“ “And again, we said look, I had the chance of running. I didn’t

How the 1964 Democratic Convention

Even the late "positive thinking" avatar Norman Vincent Peale would have a tough slog finding optimism over Atlantic City´s current state, what with gaming revenues running about half of what they were eight years ago and three casinos set to turn out their lights by mid-September. But everything is relative. Compared with 50 years ago this week, the town is Las Vegas, Paris and Rio de Janeiro combined. The resort´s post-World War II decline was exacerbated by what should have been a triumph: Atlantic City had won the right to host the Democratic National Convention. For four days, beginning Aug.

Christine Lagarde, the chief of the International Monetary Fund, was placed under official investigation for negligence in a French corruption probe that dates back to her days as France’s finance minister. After a fourth round of questioning before magistrates on Wednesday, Lagarde said she would return to her work in Washington later in the day and said in a statement the decision was “without basis.” She is the third IMF managing director in a decade to face legal troubles. She and her former chief of staff face questions about their role in a 400 million-euro ($531 million) payment to a

On August 26 the California Assembly passed SB199, requiring fake guns to be brightly painted so police know they are not real if a kid or a criminal points one at them. SB199 was born in the wake of the October 23 shooting in which Breitbart News reported that Santa Rosa, CA, police shot and killed 13-year-old Andy Lopez after he refuse to drop a gun that turned out to be a replica. According to SFGate, SB199 "was introduced by [state] senator Kevin de Leon (D-Los Angeles)." It has the support of assemblyman Mark Levine (D-Rafael), who says, "Horrific things

Rosa Imelda Robles Loreto, 41, was detained after a routine traffic revealed she was in the country illegally. The mother of two, who lives in Tucson, received a deportation order requiring her to leave the country by August 8th. But instead of returning to Mexico, the day before her deportation order she packed her bags and moved into Tucson’s Southside Presbyterian Church, which has become her and her family’s sanctuary of sorts the past three weeks to avoid deportation. Robles Loreto, who now lives inside the church with her husband and two sons, said she is trying to maintain a

DEERFIELD, Va.— An Air Force fighter jet based in Massachusetts crashed in the mountains of western Virginia on Wednesday, shaking the ground and frightening residents, and officials said the pilot´s fate was unknown. No injuries were reported on the ground as authorities located the crash site through heavy smoke on a mountainside. The pilot of the single-seat F-15C was with the 104th Fighter Wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard in Westfield, Maj. Matthew Mutti said. The jet was on a standard training exercise to receive a system upgrade and had no munition onboard, said Mutti, from Barnes Air National

The Islamic State Has

Whatever they may disagree about, Western leaders are in complete agreement about one thing: the new self-styled caliphate, the Islamic State, has nothing whatsoever to do with Islam. It’s a comforting, reassuring vision for Western non-Muslims facing a massive influx of Muslim immigrants and jittery about the prospect of Islamic terrorism, except for just one problem: it’s entirely false. Barack Obama has made it clear: “ISIL speaks for no religion. Their victims are overwhelmingly Muslim, and no faith teaches people to massacre innocents.” David Cameron intoned: “What we are witnessing is actually a battle between Islam on the one hand and

Who imagined that the Obama administration´s effort to make school lunches more nutritious (but less delicious) would encourage children to become little community organizers? The U.S. Agriculture Department has found an upside to all those "healthy" school lunches that students refuse to eat: It says schools can use the plate waste as a "learning opportunity" to turn young students into "civic-minded, community-conscious adults." A blog on the USDA website explains that an elementary school in Northern Virginia is now donating untouched food to a local food pantry. "The school’s Eco Team, run by sixth graders, ensures their fellow

He lived in California before he traveled to Syria earlier this year to join other Islamic State terrorists. But his heartbroken cousin only remembers a humble, kind man — not a militant. "We would never believe him to be involved in anything like this. He´s just a regular person." Kanyata McCain told NBC News. "My cousin is not a terrorist." The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, part of the Department of Transportation, published last week an "advanced notice of proposed rulemaking" on "vehicle-to-vehicle communications." What NHTSA is proposing could begin a transformation in the American transportation system that makes our lives better and freer — or gives government more power over where we go and when. In announcing its proposed rulemaking, NHTSA is stressing its intention to protect the "privacy" of American drivers. "This document initiates rulemaking that would propose to create a new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, FMVSS No. 150, to require vehicle-to-vehicle communication capability for light vehicles,"

A suspect was shot dead and a crew member with the “Cops” television show later died after the apparent disruption of a robbery Tuesday night at a Wendy’s restaurant in midtown Omaha, police said Wednesday morning. More than 30 shots were fired, officials said. The fatal shots apparently were fired by an Omaha police officer. Officials said it appears the only shots fired came from police. Officials said the robbery suspect apparently had an Airsoft gun, a type of gun that often looks like an actual firearm. The victim was described as the crew member who holds the microphone. He

The leader of a prominent liberal super PAC on Wednesday defended taking money from billionaire George Soros while simultaneously condemning conservatives for benefiting from the fortunes of the Koch Brothers. During a Twitter exchange Wednesday, Brad Woodhouse of the Soros-backed American Bridge 21st Century argued that it is okay for his group to accept money from liberal billionaires because, unlike the Koch Brothers, these donors are “not looking to screw the middle class to enrich themselves.” Conservatives argue that thinking is hypocritical. Everything started Wednesday when Woodhouse blasted a news story to reporters titled, “GOP Senate Candidates Bow at Koch

The Immigration & Customs Enforcement agency renewed its search this week for "Transportation Services for Unaccompanied Children" crossing the border into the United States. An earlier notice posted in January of this year seeking "escort services" for an estimated 65,000 unaccompanied children raised questions about the Obama administration´s prior recognition of the effect that news of its Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) plan would have on primarily Central American parents who mistakenly believed their children would benefit from the program. The current notice says that ICE will award an "indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract" to provide "unarmed escort staff,

Marco Rubio´s office got in touch this week to say the Florida senator and possible 2016 GOP presidential hopeful wanted to discuss immigration. The specific subject was President Obama´s expected move to unilaterally legalize as many as half of the 11 million immigrants currently in the United States illegally. But Rubio, speaking by phone during a visit to Atlanta, had much more to say about the broader issue of immigration reform. What he outlined amounted to an entirely new approach to the issue that has contributed to his rise, then fall, and perhaps rise again, in the Republican Party. Rubio

The groups, which include ColorofChange.org, Organization for Black Struggle, CREDO, MomsRising, MoveOn.org, among others, say they have gathered 900,000 signatures for a petition calling on President Obama and U.S. Attorney Eric Holder to fully investigate, prosecute and eventually fire all members of the police force that played a role in Brown’s killing. One of the most controversial finales in television history aired way back on June 10, 2007. When The Sopranos director David Chase cut to black as Tony Soprano was eating dinner with his family in a New Jersey diner, thousands of confused people nationwide called their cable companies to complain that their HBO service went out. Others were just like, “Huh? What happened to Tony?” Chase’s refusal to definitively spell out Tony’s fate has been met largely by anger and outrage from viewers but, on the other hand, the lack of confirmation has also led to some incredibly detailed analysis

It’s not a “new” treaty, apparently, if they’re rewriting an old treaty that’s already been ratified. Maybe that’s a sneak peek of Obama’s Syria policy too. Instead of asking for a new AUMF against ISIS, he could issue an “addendum” or whatever to the 2001 AUMF against Al Qaeda. Come to think of it, that’s his approach on immigration too. The mega-amnesty he’s getting ready to uncork isn’t being presented as new policy, even though it would legalize five million people or more. It’s being presented as a discretionary application of law that’s already on the books. Turns out every

And the move has provoked a fresh round of moral panic, faux patriotism and confusion. (Snip for graphic) It’s doubtful there will be much of a real backlash despite much wishful thinking. Most obviously, the majority of fast food customers are probably less inclined than the editors of the New Republic or the petitioners of MoveOn.org to mistake high tax rates

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.— Former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist continued his political comeback Tuesday as Democratic voters selected him as their nominee to challenge Republican Gov. Rick Scott in Florida, one of four states where voters were choosing candidates for statewide office. Crist easily defeated former state Sen. Both have struggled with sagging approval ratings and run-ins with conservatives. “It’s a wonderful night,” Crist declared after accepting a concession call from Rich. Crist said the strong showing is a sign that Democrats
