More than a century and a half after his death at the Battle of Gettysburg, a Union Army officer is being awarded the nation’s highest military decoration. President Obama approved the Medal of Honor for First Lieutenant Alonzo H. Cushing, the White House announced Tuesday. Cushing was killed in action on July 3, 1863 – age 22 – during the battle’s third and final day, in the face of Pickett’s Charge, a futile, deadly Confederate advance that threatened to turn the tide of the war. Cushing served as commanding officer of Battery A, 4th United States Artillery, Artillery Brigade, 2nd Corps for

MINSK, Belarus -- Ukraine´s president said Wednesday that Vladimir Putin accepts the principles of a peace plan for Ukraine but the Russian leader insisted that only Kiev can reach a cease-fire deal with the pro-Moscow separatists. Following meetings between Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko that included a one-on-one session that stretched into the night, there was no indication of a quick end to the fighting that has engulfed eastern Ukraine. "This is not our business," Putin said of any cease-fire plan. "This is Ukraine´s business." Russia "can only help to create an atmosphere of trust for this important and

The same media outlets that couldn´t wait to hype the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri are tiptoeing very delicately around the beating of Iraq veteran Ralph Weems in Mississippi. Weems is a white man severely beaten last Saturday night, allegedly by a mob of black men upset about the Brown shooting. Working from a phone interview conducted by Weems´ friend with the Associated Press, the UK Daily Mail has the most detailed account of the incident: David Knighten of West Point told AP earlier by phone that he and Weems had gone to a Waffle House early Saturday.

Capitulation is not the answer when it comes to these neighborhood narcs. Whether they’re ratting out your kid’s lemonade stand to regulators or sniffing at your choice of fescue, or demanding local businesses remove their totally innocuous advertising, don’t give in. BURLINGTON, Vt. — A Winooski restaurant’s decision to take down a bacon advertisement has become the center of an online backlash. “It’s blown up beyond all imagination,” City Manager Katherine “Deac” Decarreau said in an interview Monday. Last week, Sneakers Bistro and Cafe removed a sign reading “Yield for Sneakers Bacon” from a garden at the Winooski Rotary after

WASHINGTON — As he has grown weary of Washington, Barack Obama has shed parts of his presidency, like drying petals falling off a rose. He left the explaining and selling of his signature health care legislation to Bill Clinton. He outsourced Congress to Rahm Emanuel in the first term, and now doesn’t bother to source it at all. He left schmoozing, as well as a spiraling Iraq, to Joe Biden. Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser, comes across as more than a messagemeister. As the president floats in the empyrean, Rhodes seems to make foreign policy even as he’s

A lawyer in the IRS ethics office is facing the possibility of being disbarred, according to records that accuse her of lying to a court-appointed board and hiding what she’d done with money from a settlement that was supposed to go to two medical providers who had treated her client. The disciplinary arm of the D.C. Court of Appeals has recommended that Takisha McGee, a section manager in the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility, lose her law license over the charge, which stems from a personal injury case she worked about a year before she joined the tax agency. Washington — The Obama administration has picked a Connecticut official to run HealthCare.gov ahead of a second open enrollment season looming as a test of competence for the feds. Kevin Counihan leads Access Health CT, a health insurance marketplace seen as a national model. As CEO of the federal exchange, Counihan’s challenge will be far bigger. Connecticut enrolled about 80,000 people, while more than 5 million signed up in the 36 states served by the federal marketplace. Insurance exchanges offer subsidized private coverage to people who don’t have workplace health plans. The role of federal CEO is new, created by Health and Human Services

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan beat up President Barack Obama before he arrived in town, then showed up at the airport to give him a kiss on the cheek. That’s the kind of balance Hagan’s trying to strike in a state where Obama’s still very popular in some parts that helped her win in 2008, but dragging her down so much elsewhere that she’s one of the Democrats’ most vulnerable incumbents. Hagan issued an advanced draft of her speech to the American Legion here before Obama arrived, charging that the president “has not done enough” to restore trust

Back in the 1980s, the Democratic Party media dubbed Ronald Reagan the “Teflon President.” By this, they meant that their false, dishonest and trivial attacks on Reagan didn’t sway the public, which appreciated the most meteoric economic recovery in modern history and restoration of America’s status as not just a great power, but a competent one. Something quite different is happening with Barack Obama. By any possible measure, he has been an awful president. His administration has been good for hedge fund managers and “green” energy scammers, but disastrous for working class Americans, especially African-Americans. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist won the Democratic primary to challenge Republican Gov. Crist defeated Nan Rich, a former Senate Democratic leader who has been campaigning for governor longer than Crist has been a Democrat. He is the first person in Florida to win the nomination for governor as a Republican and a Democrat. With 39 percent of the precincts counted, Crist had 75 percent to 25 percent

The long-term ceasefire that took effect Tuesday, after a surprise Egyptian-brokered agreement between Israel and Hamas, is being hailed by the terror group as a "victory." In this case, the claim is more than propaganda. According to the details of the agreement, the Gaza border crossings are to be opened, the fishing zone is to be widened, and talks are to commence soon about air and sea ports. No wonder half Israel´s Cabinet is opposed. Israel certainly has achieved military gains. It wiped out most of Hamas´s rocket arsenal, and destroyed almost all of its terror tunnels before those could

The U.S. government is tracking and gathering intelligence on as many as 300 Americans who are fighting side by side with the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria and are poised to become a major threat to the homeland, according to senior U.S. officials. The Obama administration has ruled out the possibility of coordinating any U.S. airstrikes in Syria with President Bashar al-Assad’s government, forcing U.S. officials to either design a campaign that would evade Syrian air defenses or coordinate it with Assad through a third party. WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is working to forge a sweeping international climate change agreement to compel nations to cut their planet-warming fossil fuel emissions, but without ratification from Congress. In preparation for this agreement, to be signed at a United Nations summit meeting in 2015 in Paris, the negotiators are meeting with diplomats from other countries to broker a deal to commit some of the world’s largest economies to enact laws to reduce their carbon pollution. But under the Constitution, a president may enter into a legally binding treaty only if it is approved by a two-thirds majority of the

Runaway growth in the emission of greenhouse gases is swamping all political efforts to deal with the problem, raising the risk of “severe, pervasive and irreversible impacts” over the coming decades, according to a draft of a major new United Nations report. Global warming is already cutting grain production by several percentage points, the report found, and that could grow much worse if emissions continue unchecked. Higher seas, devastating heat waves, torrential rain and other climate extremes are also being felt around the world as a result of human-produced emissions, the draft report said, and those problems are likely to

THE COUNTRY is about to see its fiercest climate-change battle. After years of congressional inaction, President Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency is applying new rules to curb greenhouse-gas emissions from cars, trucks and — most controversially — power plants, the biggest national emitters. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has said he will try to restrict the EPA if Republicans take over the Senate. Mr. Obama’s executive actions will be an issue in the 2016 presidential campaign. The EPA has drawn up the best possible policy framework under current law, and it is much better than nothing. Congress should not weaken

The Lincoln Center’s Metropolitan Opera plans to produce “The Death of Klinghoffer” this fall. The opera romanticizes violence and terrorism against Jews. Leon Klinghoffer was a disabled American appliance manufacturer who was murdered and thrown overboard by Palestinian terrorists who hijacked the cruise ship Achille Lauro in 1985. They rolled him right off the ship. Now the Lincoln Center is running an opera justifying his death. Stand up to this inappropriate whitewashing of terrorism, email Peter Gelb at pgelb@metopera.org or call (212) 799-3100. Allen B. West reported: What do you think? The racially-fraught unrest in Ferguson, coupled with the prospect of an expanded US military campaign in Iraq and Syria, has shoved Israel’s conflict with Hamas onto the American media’s back-burner.
