Nobody’s Fault

All of a sudden, people have noticed that we are in trouble, and many are saying it isn’t the president’s fault. All the bad news, from Iraq to Ukraine, from Libya and Syria to the Mexican border, just seems to have happened: Obama was standing there, golfing or shaking hands with donors, and, like a burst of bad weather, the winds blew, the skies opened, and things went to hell. Mysterious forces conspired against him, terrible setbacks occurred for no reason, and we were left with effects without a cause. His supporters commiserate with him and note his bad fortune

The Islamic State’ video-dissemination of one of its goons beheading an American is an existential challenge from which we cannot afford to shrink. Until the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/IS) did that, it made sense for the U.S. government to help contain it because the Islamic world, which the IS threatens most directly, must destroy it sooner or later. But internetting that beheading was a gory declaration of America’s impotence—a dare-by-deed that is sure to move countless young persons around the globe to get in on killing us, anywhere they can. The longer the Islamic State survives, the more will take up

House Republicans are calling on the Department of Justice to appoint a special counsel for its probe into the IRS targeting scandal, claiming new evidence shows the investigation is “compromised” due to multiple instances of conflict of interest. One example, according to House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa and Regulatory Affairs Subcommittee Chairman Jim Jordan, involved a DOJ attorney representing the IRS in litigation relating to the scandal who used to work for the IRS and was involved in the targeting. However Monday night a DOJ source confirmed to Fox News that the employee in question, Andrew Strelka, "no

America is suddenly angry at the laxity, incompetence, and polarizing politics of the Obama administration, the bad optics of the president putting about in his bright golf clothes while the world burns. Certainly, no recent president has failed on so many fronts — honesty, transparency, truthfulness, the economy, foreign policy, the duties of the commander-in-chief, executive responsibilities, and spiritual leadership. For those who are “shocked” at the present meltdown, of a magnitude not seen since the annus horribilis of 1979, in their defense: Obama certainly did not campaign on a new health-care plan that would force Americans to give up the

BEIRUT -- Syria said Monday it was ready to help confront the rising threat from the Islamic State group, but warned the United States against carrying out airstrikes without Damascus´ consent, saying any such attack would be considered an aggression. In seeking to portray itself as a partner for the international community, Syria seemed intent on capitalizing on the growing clamor among some U.S. officials, including military leaders, to expand the current American air campaign against the Islamic extremists in Iraq and to hit them in Syria as well. President Barack Obama has long been wary of getting dragged into the bloody

WASHINGTON -- Three months after a veterans´ health care scandal rocked his administration, President Barack Obama is addressing the American Legion National Convention in an appearance that is also fraught with midterm politics. The president´s speech to the Legion convention Tuesday in Charlotte, North Carolina, aims to draw attention to administration initiatives to care for veterans once they come home. For Obama, the visit to North Carolina has a heavy political subtext. The state´s Democratic senator, Kay Hagan, is in a difficult re-election race and Obama is not popular in the state. Hagan was scheduled to speak to the American Legion too,

How Best Not to Respond to ISIS

For the left, American power must never be exercised except in the direst of situations, and even then, it must not be a unilateral exercise of power. This is the logic underlying the White House response to ISIS, or the Islamic State, as it calls itself. At this time, the U.S. military has the capacity to obliterate this gang of thugs with a relatively modest projection of force. If the administration continues to drag its feet, it will be much harder. Yet Obama continues to drag his feet, because he believes that America “leads from behind.”

Obama Demonstrates Fear, not Courage

Challenging times call for extraordinary courage. But at the risk of sounding indelicate, the only cojones associated with President Obama are the ones lined up on the putting green, where his frequent appearances have given rise to a new meaning of the term “stay the course.” You’d think the so-called leader of the free world would at least sound courageous. But at recent press conferences, Mr. President has sauntered in, often late, leaned nonchalantly on the podium, and delivered a lackluster “lecture” in a tone of voice more peremptory than somber. His record for ambiguity and dullness reached a nadir of

If a retired tyrant chose to write a guidebook entitled “How to be an Arab Dictator”, what would be the most important lesson? It might be summarised thus: “When you are in trouble, fan the flames of Islamist extremism so that your enemies will look even worse than you.” [Snip] The rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) has apparently convinced the likes of Lord Dannatt, a former Army commander, and Sir Christopher Meyer, once our Ambassador in Washington, that we must reach an accommodation with Assad in order to suppress a common threat.

Oak Ridge, Tenn. — When Oak Ridge National Laboratory´s Biomass Steam Plant opened in 2012, it was supposed to save the lab money while also cutting pollution. But the plant had to be shut down after just a year and a half when a systems check found that some parts were already failing. The Knoxville News Sentinel reported Johnson Controls handled the financing and construction of the $60 million plant. The company was to be paid from the cost savings, estimated to reach $260 million over two decades. An August 2013 audit by the Energy Department´s Office of Inspector General was critical

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, have donated $1 million to a Washington state campaign seeking to expand background checks on gun sales, bringing the total amount the campaign has brought in up to nearly $6 million. The donation to the Initiative 594 campaign was given Friday, but it was not made public until Monday, when it posted on the state’s Public Disclosure Commission website. In another setback for California´s tough gun-control laws, a federal judge ruled Monday that the state can´t require gun buyers to wait 10 days to pick up their newly purchased weapon if they already own a gun or have a license to possess a handgun. U.S. District Judge Anthony Ishii of Fresno said the 10-day wait for current gun owners is a restriction on constitutional rights that isn´t justified by safety concerns. He noted that all firearms purchasers, including second- and third-time buyers, must pass a state background check of their criminal and mental-health records, but said it

When a federal appeals court ruled last month that a seemingly arcane wording flaw in the Affordable Care Act should invalidate a central part of the law, many of those who drafted the statute five years ago reacted with shock and anger. In 2009, they had spent months piecing together a compromise that sought to create a national system of subsidized insurance — but one run by the states. Now, they fear their work could be undone by what some call a "drafting error" and others portray as a political miscalculation. The judges from the U.S. Court of Appeals for

The two-count indictment against Gov. The wide-ranging attack argued that Perry’s criminal charges were based on state laws that are unconstitutional or, at the very least, were misinterpreted — constituting an improper attempt to criminalize politics and limit gubernatorial power in “intolerable and incalculable” ways. “Continued prosecution of Governor Perry on the current indictment is unprecedented, insupportable and simply

Two hundred years ago on Aug. 24, the U.S. Capitol and the White House went up in flames. If not for the quick thinking of a State Department clerk, the Declaration of Independence, and many other documents dating to the founding, would have as well. On the morning of Aug. 20, 1814, Secretary of State James Monroe stood atop a bluff near Aquasco Mills, and gazed three miles south toward Benedict, a village on Maryland’s Patuxent River. Though he was without a spyglass, through squinted eyes Monroe spotted British ships coming up the river and their soldiers coming ashore. With that,

Having once served a president, I don’t begrudge any president a vacation. There is, in fact, no escape from this relentless job. A change of scenery does not involve a change in responsibilities, or even a release from the essence of the president’s routine. The intelligence briefings stalk him. Presidential respites are measured in hours, not days or weeks — say, a few hours on a golf course. And the public would be selfish and shortsighted to demand those downtime hours, which are necessary for humans to function. The problem for President Obama has come in managing the symbolic aspect
