Inhale: Marijuana initiatives

When it comes to supporting the national push to legalize marijuana in several states, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his Democratic colleagues should just inhale. It might save their jobs. Armed with powerful statistics, Brookings Institution expert John Hudak said that having pro-marijuana initiatives on the fall ballot should draw younger, passionate Democrats to the polls and help Reid keep his leadership position and the Senate in Democratic hands. “The presence of those initiatives will likely drive younger and more liberal voters to the polls,” said Hudak in his report titled “Harry Reid should love marijuana:

WASHINGTON — Mexican officials have deported more than 13,000 of the 14,000 undocumented, unaccompanied minors who have been caught at Mexico’s southern border, a rate significantly higher than in the United States, according to government sources familiar with the situation. Additionally, Mexican authorities have deported more than 64,000 of the estimated 69,000 adults that have been detained along their southern border this year. Those numbers stand in stark contrast to the deportation of minor immigrants from the United States: None of the more than 60,000 Central American minors detained this year have been

A shadowy network of wealthy liberal donors bankrolled an operation to pack one of America’s most powerful courts with progressive judges, according to documents reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon. Now the effort could prevent an Obamacare challenge from reaching the Supreme Court, legal experts say. The strategy to fill the D.C. Court of Appeals with left-leaning judges was aided by the American Constitution Society, a non-profit group that “promotes a progressive vision of the law.” The ACS is funded in part by the Democracy Alliance, a liberal donor network that funnels millions to a web of dark-money member

President Obama returns to Washington on Monday after a two-week vacation that was neither restful nor productive. From the unrest in Ferguson, Mo., to the airstrikes in Iraq, the ongoing tensions in Ukraine and the Middle East, and the execution of American journalist James Foley, it’s been a tough few weeks for the country — and for its leader. Obama drew criticism from the left for not being forceful enough in speaking out on the fatal shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson and from the right over the death of Foley and the rise of the militant Islamic State.

Cornel West is a professor at Union Theological Seminary and one of my favorite public intellectuals, a man who deals in penetrating analyses of current events, expressed in a pithy and highly quotable way. (Snip)I also remember, and this is just me I’m talking about, being impressed by Barack Obama who was running for president at the time. I don’t know if you and I talked about him on that occasion. But at the time, I sometimes thought that he looked like he had what this country needed. So that’s my first question, it’s a lot of ground to cover

An ´all-clear´ has been issued at Fort Lee after an active shooter was reported this morning at the Virginia military base. Early reports say a female soldier shot herself, and it´s unclear what condition she is in. An Army official previously told Fox News that the lockdown was started by a ´disgruntled´ female shooter who is now in custody. According to Fort Lee´s verified Twitter account, the base was put into lockdown around 9:20am and personnel there told to enact active shooter protocols. Transgender Americans seeking gender reassignment surgeries are finding relief through Obamacare, The Daily Beast reported on Monday. Federal laws banning health insurance discrimination against transgender people, combined with Obamacare´s ban on denying coverage for those with pre-existing conditions, have paved a path for transgender patients who wish to make the transition from one gender to another. "The federal anti-discrimination regulations have yet to be written, but California insurance regulators have said that companies must treat transgender patients the same as other patients," reports The Daily Beast. "For example, if plans cover hormones for post-menopausal women, they must also cover them

Afterwards he met, you can see here on the screen, with Captain Ron Johnson of the state highway patrol, who is in charge of the police effort, who said that he thought that Holder and the fact that the grand jury was beginning to hear actual evidence, were the two major factors in calming

Chicago police shot and killed two armed men in separate incidents on the West and South sides Sunday evening, authorities said. In the first shooting, gang enforcement officers responded about 6:30 p.m. to the 2800 block of West Polk Street in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side after someone reported seeing armed men on the block, (Snip) Two officers turned a corner after hearing gunfire and saw a teenager holding a gun and standing over someone who was on the ground, Camden said. The Obama administration announced this weekend that it will be sending not one, but three, officials to attend the funeral of Michael Brown on Monday. President Barack Obama is sending three White House officials to the funeral service of the Missouri teenager whose death in a police shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, has sparked days of racial unrest. (Snip) The decision would be highly questionable as is, but when compared to the White House’s presence at, say, the funerals of Maj. Gen. Not terribly long ago in a country that many people misremember, if they knew it at all, a black person was killed in public every four days for often the most mundane of infractions, or rather accusation of infractions – for taking a hog, making boastful remarks, for stealing 75 cents. For the most banal of missteps, the penalty could be an hours-long spectacle of torture and lynching. No trial, no jury, no judge, no appeal. Now, well into a new century, as a family in Ferguson, Missouri, buries yet another American teenager killed at the hands of authorities, the

Pension officials with the Chicago Transit Authority need much more than a Ventra Card for some of the taxpayer-funded travel they’ve been doing in recent years. The CTA’s retirement plan and health care trust spent close to $60,000 since 2010 to travel to places such as Honolulu, New Orleans, San Diego and Las Vegas for pension-related conferences. That’s according to public documents the CTA plan turned over only after we sued the agency earlier this year for allegedly violating the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, the state law that guarantees public access to certain government records.

FERGUSON, Mo. — It was 1 a.m. and Michael Brown Jr. called his father, his voice trembling. He had seen something overpowering. In the thick gray clouds that lingered from a passing storm this past June, he made out an angel. And he saw Satan chasing the angel and the angel running into the face of God. Mr. Brown was a prankster, so his father and stepmother chuckled at first. “No, no, Dad! No!” the elder Mr. Brown remembered his son protesting. “I’m serious.” And the black teenager from this suburb of St. Louis, who had just graduated from high

We can´t call ISIS "evil." We also shouldn´t call them a "cancer," or "savage," or "barbaric." Oh, and the fact that George W. It is essential to the Democrats’ hopes for a strong black turnout in November that the manufactured narrative of evil white cops assassinating an innocent black teenager be maintained. As Richard Baehr noted to me, “…after the video appeared of the robbery and theft, a new narrative was needed for Michael Brown. It is not only the robbery/ assault/in the store, but the reports of violence to the officer (damaged eye socket), and admission by Brown´s team that he was in an altercation with officer in the car, that has impacted pubic opinion that he was a choirboy.” The New York

In a New Yorker interview this year, which seemed to focus on the Lakers more than anything else, Obama wrote off ISIS as what happens when a “jayvee team puts on Lakers uniforms”. The Obama administration says the nation is facing a threat from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) that, in the words of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, is “beyond anything we’ve seen.” Earlier this year, however, President Obama was dismissing ISIS as the junior varsity of al Qaeda. The White House on Friday suggested that assessment is now moot because the group has “gained capacity in the last several months.” A timeline of remarks this year from Obama and other administration officials show an evolution of thinking on ISIS — a change critics say has not come fast enough: Jan. 27: Obama
