Deep Pockets, Dark Goals: How
Will ISIS Keep Funding Terror?
NBC News, by Robert Windrem    Original Article

Ransom payments for kidnap victims, crimes like extortion and robbery and, lately, oil sales are believed to have brought in “hundreds of millions of dollars” for ISIS during its two-year reign of terror, U.S. intelligence officials tell NBC News. But the group is burning through money nearly as quickly, fighting a two-front war in Syria and Iraq and trying to govern the self-declared “caliphate” it has established, they say. The Islamic terror group’s annual revenues are now at least comparable to the funding that al Qaeda had available during its heyday in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when U.S.

The Denver Post is reporting that a lawsuit being brought by survivors and family members in the wake of the 2012 Aurora theater shooting against the theater may move forward. The owner of the Aurora movie theater that was the site of a deadly 2012 attack could have reasonably enough foreseen the danger of such an attack to be held liable for it, a federal judge ruled Friday. Noting “the grim history of mass shootings and mass killings that have occurred in more recent times,” U.S. District Court Judge R. Brooke Jackson ruled that Cinemark — owner of the Century Aurora 16

A U.S. offensive in Syria against the radical Islamist group that beheaded an American journalist would likely be constrained by persistent intelligence gaps and an inability to rely on fleets of armed drones that have served as the Obama administration’s signature weapon against terrorist networks elsewhere, U.S. officials said. The Pentagon has conducted daily surveillance flights along Iraq’s border with Syria in recent weeks as part of a push to bolster U.S. intelligence on the Islamic State without crossing into Syrian airspace and risking the loss of aircraft to that nation’s air defenses, officials said.

Baghdad, Iraq -- As violence continues to wrack Iraq, another ethnic slaughter may be in the making by Sunni extremists from ISIS. ISIS fighters have besieged the ethnic Turkmen Shiite town of Amerli in the north for two months, and its fewer than 20,000 residents are without power and running out of food, water and medical supplies. "The situation of the people in Amerli is desperate and demands immediate action to prevent the possible massacre of its citizens," said Nickolay Mladenov, the U.N. secretary-general´s special representative for Iraq.

ROCHESTER, N.H. – Texas Gov. Rick Perry commemorated the life of James Foley, the American journalist brutally murdered by ISIS, in his New Hampshire hometown today, merely miles from where Foley’s parents live. “This young man personified what courage is all about. He showed us sacrificial service. He went into dangerous parts of the world to shine a bright light into dark places,” Perry said. “It is a very important job that James Foley was engaged in. “We all collectively mourn his death and all America stands with the people of New Hampshire in remembering this hero,” Perry added. “It’s times like

AKSU, China -- Outside a mosque in China´s restive west, a government-appointed Muslim cleric was dodging a foreign reporter´s question about why young men of the Uighur ethnic minority don´t have beards when one such youth interrupted. "Why don´t you just tell them the truth?" he shouted to the cleric under the nervous gaze of several police officers who had been tailing the reporters all day in the oasis city of Aksu. "It´s because the government doesn´t allow beards." A plainclothes Uighur policeman swiftly rebuked the young man. "Be careful what you say," he warned. Dubai, UAE - The Gulf nation of Qatar is hitting back at suggestions that it supports the Islamic State or other extremist groups, and is calling for "determined, collective action" to end sectarian violence gripping Iraq and Syria. Qatari Foreign Minister Khalid bin Mohammed al-Attiyah said in a written statement distributed to journalists Saturday that efforts to stop the bloodshed must include cutting off the flow of funds to extremist groups. He says Qatar does not support extremists including ISIS — an alternate name for the Islamic State — in any way, and is "repelled by their views, their violent methods and their ambitions."

The long-held idea that Europeans were the first to bring tuberculosis to the Americas when they arrived in the 15th Century has been thrown into doubt. Instead, a study suggests that the deadly disease was present in the area hundreds of years before Christopher Columbus made landfall. Genetic tests reveal that humans were probably not responsible for moving TB to the New World at all - instead, seals carried it there. The research is published in Nature. Johannes Krause, from the University of Tuebingen, in Germany, said: “Who would have thought seals were actually transmitting one of the deadliest diseases to

In his remarks on the murder of James Foley, the American journalist decapitated by the terrorists of ISIS, President Obama condemned Foley’s killers, appropriately, as a “cancer” on the Middle East and the world. But he also found room for the most Obama-ish of condemnations: “One thing we can all agree on,” he insisted, is that the would-be caliphate’s murderous vision has “no place in the 21st century.” The idea that America’s foes and rivals are not merely morally but chronologically deficient, confused time travelers who need to turn their DeLorean around, has long been a staple of this administration’s

Even though it´s currently illegal, many Bay Area restaurants already allow dogs to sit with their owners in outdoor patio areas, but now Gov. Jerry Brown has officially signed the practice into law effective New Year´s Day. This new law would only allow dogs to sit at an outdoor patio area when the dog owner is dining, except for service dogs. Dogs would still not be allowed inside the restaurant and certainly not in the kitchen.

That could boost popularity for the party,” Buchanan responded “executive amnesty will set the country completely
