Obama’s unlawful Bergdahl-
for-terrorists swap
Washington Times, by Editorial    Original Article

President Obama was wrong earlier this year to trade five hardened terrorists from the prison at Guantanamo Bay for a deserter. All but the president’s most dedicated supporters understood then that the trade was a really bad idea. Now, the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office has confirmed what many suspect, that the swap violated a “clear and unambiguous” law. For this White House, the law is little more than an annoyance to be swatted away when inconvenient. Mr. Obama makes and remakes the law as he goes along. Congress has allowed itself to become irrelevant. But Congress, in a rare fit

It’s been a busy couple of days for U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. On Wednesday, the nation’s top law enforcement officer — who doubles as the leading impediment to law enforcement, whenever he sees a law he doesn’t like — flew to St. Louis for another exercise in the selective dispensation of justice. Holder came to express sympathy with the protesters chanting “no justice, no peace” in Ferguson, one of the city’s close-in suburbs, where an 18-year-old black youth, described by friends and family as a “gentle giant,” on his way to visit his grandmother, had been shot and killed by a

Ferguson, Mo. "I JUST SAW SOMEONE DIE OMFG,” wrote Emanuel Freeman, a teenage rap aficionado who lives in the Canfield Green housing project in Ferguson, Missouri. It was about noon on Saturday, August 9, when Michael Brown, a hulking 18-year-old recently graduated from a failing high school and 10 minutes removed from committing a strong-arm robbery, was shot dead by Ferguson policeman Darren Wilson in the street outside Freeman’s window. Freeman appears not to have seen the fusillade that killed Brown, and no uncontested account of it has emerged. But we can see from the tweets Freeman posted in the following

WASHINGTON — Maybe backgammon might be a better idea for President Obama. The Putterer-in-Chief played golf again Thursday on ritzy Martha´s Vineyard, a day after he raised eyebrows by seguing seamlessly from a statement on the terrorist butchery of ISIS to the links. "It´s bad because perception is very important in foreign affairs," Laura Ingraham, the conservative talk radio host, said in an email. "Same reason it was important not to pose for a selfie at Mandela´s funeral. It all conveys a lack of seriousness and maturity." "The optics are terrible," added John Feehery, a former top aide to House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Il.)

WASHINGTON — Gov. Rick Perry left Texas behind on Thursday for a three-day jaunt to Washington and the presidential testing ground of New Hampshire, vowing to beat his abuse-of-power charges. “There are a few public officials in Travis County who have taken issue with an exercise of my constitutional veto authority,” he told an overflow crowd at the conservative Heritage Foundation. “I am very confident in my case, and I can assure you that I will fight this attack on our system of government.” Rich Lowry, editor of the conservative National Review, introduced Perry by calling the charges a sign of Democratic

Given that I’m something of a broken record on the subject of due process, my contributions to the discussion about Ferguson have hitherto taken the form of injunctions: namely, to “wait for more information” and refrain from jumping to conclusions. Justice being a process and not an outcome, it has been downright alarming to watch observers on both sides of the aisle reach verdicts that they cannot possibly substantiate. Many conservatives have been too quick to take the reports that Michael Brown had marijuana in his system and enjoyed lyrically violent music and spin them into premature insinuations of guilt;

Sears was once a sparkling star of the retail world going back to the days before there was such a thing as a chain store, but now it is best known as a venerable brand in a steady decline. Sears Holdings, the parent of the namesake department store and Kmart, announced this week a loss of more than $500 million over the last three months. Similar losses in the previous quarter means the 128-year-old firm has lost almost $1 billion in the last six months. Eddie Lampert, CEO of Sears Holdings since January 2013, called his firm´s second quarter earnings

DONETSK, Russia-- Trucks marked as being from a bitterly disputed Russian aid convoy to Ukraine began returning to Russia on Saturday. An Associated Press reporter counted 67 trucks entering the border crossing in the Russian city of Donetsk before noon Saturday. Another AP reporter on the Ukrainian side of the border said a line of trucks about 3 kilometers (2 miles) long was waiting to cross. The checkpoint on the Ukrainian side was being operated by separatist rebels, who inspected the trucks. Around 40 of the tractor-trailer trucks seen by journalists on the Ukrainian were empty, but it could not be determined

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- Hamas has signed a pledge to back any Palestinian bid to join the International Criminal Court, two senior officials in the group said Saturday. Such a step could expose Israel - as well as Hamas - to war crimes investigations. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has debated for months whether to join the court, a step that would transform his relations with Israel from tense to openly hostile and could also strain his ties with the United States. The decision by Hamas to sign a document in support of a court bid removes a major obstacle,

On Friday, he accomplished No. 2: touching the names of his former platoon buddies on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall in Washington, D.C. WASHINGTON — On a patch of land in the shadow of the Capitol’s dome, a new memorial for soldiers will, for the first time here, honor the living as well as the dead. It is unusual in another way, too: It is the only monument in Washington dedicated solely to those who have been disabled in the nation’s wars. The 2.4-acre memorial honors “not only the four million who are alive today, but the millions that have gone before us and those, unfortunately, who will come after us,” said Arthur H. The problem with ObamaCare isn´t just that it´s the so called law of the land, said law seems to keep changing in reaction to events and court rulings until not even "we have to pass it to see what´s in it" holds up to the slightest scrutiny. As usual with a Friday news dump, the devil is in the details down below. The Obama administration is moving forward with regulations meant to enable certain businesses and charities to steer clear of the Affordable Care Act’s so-called birth control mandate, while ensuring free contraception coverage for women under the law. Turning once again to what the sociologists call “coping mechanisms”: there is marijuana and then there is alcohol. They are increasingly the civilized options. Consider alcohol. Consider a suave scotch and soda. One does not sit down to a scotch and soda to get blitzed, unless one is a veritable drunk. One sits down and sips a scotch and soda while conversing with friends. Perhaps one reads a book. One enjoys the scotch for the taste. With scotch there are scores of different tastes. One drinks a single malt. One drinks a blend. The same is true with bourbon and

The U.S. has conducted nearly 100 airstrikes against the militants in Iraq since Aug. 8, and

The Pentagon on Friday blamed China for instigating a hair-raising incident in which a Chinese J-11B fighter jet buzzed a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon plane on Tuesday some 130 miles east of China’s Hainan Island. The atoll is southwest of Hong Kong in the South China Sea, and the incident occurred over international waters, said Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary. As noted in this story by The Washington Post’s Craig Whitlock, the fighter jet brought one of its wingtips within 20 feet of the Poseidon, a Boeing 737 that has been adopted to perform reconnaissance and surveillance missions and hunt for enemy submarines.

But the matter seems clearer to us now than ever, and while we wait for the National Football League to catch up with thoughtful opinion and common decency, we have decided that, except when it is essential for clarity or effect, we will no longer use the slur ourselves.
