Were the world not in such a perilous condition, State Department occasional spokeswoman Marie Harf would be welcome comic relief. Wearing a tight sweater yesterday, the young Ms. Harf took to the podium of the State Department press briefing room and refused to acknowledge that the United States is at war with ISIS. No matter what ISIS may say about being at war with us, if we stick our heads in the ground and refuse to ackbnowledge it, then I guess we won’t be at war, in Ms. Harf’s view. Left-wing billionaire Tom Steyer reportedly is having trouble persuading fellow lefties to join his $100 million campaign to elect Democrats in November. Steyer is soldiering on, nevertheless, in large part through his organization NextGen Climate. In New Hampshire, NextGen is running anti-Scott Brown ads. (Snip) What a pitiful display! “Climate change is Real…” Yes, and it has been real for millions of years. “The planet is older than 6,000 years old.” Huh? “Seawater is salty and rising.” Yes, at the same rate it has been for thousands of years. “The moon is not made of cheese.” I believe this is

GENEVA - At least 191,369 people have been killed in Syria´s conflict through April, more than double the figure documented a year ago and probably still an under-estimate, the United Nations human rights office said on Friday. The U.N. report, based on data from four groups and the government that were cross-checked, reflects a reality of killing and torture while the civil war has "dropped off the international radar", U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said. "With additional killings reported from earlier periods, in addition to the new killings that have taken place, the total is more than double the

Politico´s Glenn Thrush reports in this week´s edition of the magazine that Al Sharpton has become President Barack Obama´s "go-to man on race" in Ferguson and elsewhere. Thrush tells the story as one of Sharpton´s own reform and revival, dwelling on his weight loss, his self-professed caution with words, and criticism (envy?) from his old allies on the left. Yet he leaves out a few crucial details that are important to the Sharpton story. For one, Thrush makes no mention of Sharpton´s role in the Trayvon Martin fiasco. As Breitbart News reported at the time, Sharpton played a tripartite role.

FERGUSON, Mo. - "Tonight was a very good night in Ferguson." Those were the opening remarks made by Captain Ron Johnson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol at a media briefing Thursday morning, describing a calmer mood among protestors and law enforcement. The crowds have lessened in recent days, Johnson said, and authorities did not notice any agitators among the protestors as they had in previous nights. When asked if Wednesday night´s heavy rains helped keep more people away, Johnson said authorities noticed calmer crowds prior to the weather moving in.

General: ´Destroy the Islamic State Now´

General John Allen, who is retired from the military, says that the Islamic State (known as ISIS, ISIL, or IS) must be destroyed now. "The brutal murder of the brave American journalist James Foley is meant to directly terrorize the world’s media, the international community, and the United States. If all the actions of the Islamic State, or IS, to date weren’t sufficiently reprehensible, this act and the potential for other similar acts will snap American attention with laser-like focus onto the real danger IS poses to the existence of Iraq

Most of us, even many Democrats these days, are beginning to acknowledge the complete foreign policy failure of our president (for an overview see Bret Stephens’ The Meltdown in Commentary), but we still have to deal with over two years of Obama and we have a serious problem that needs to be handled immediately. We could die. Not all of us but a lot of us. And our society as we know it could be destroyed. Sound apocalyptic and a little overwrought? Well, it is apocalyptic, but not so overwrought. WASHINGTON – America´s top-ranked military officer says the surging Islamic State group has an "apocalyptic, end-of-days strategic vision" in the Middle East and cannot be defeated unless the United States and a coalition of partners confront it head-on in Syria. "They can be contained, not in perpetuity," Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a news conference. The United States so far has restricted a series of airstrikes to Iraq, but concerns have increased as the Islamic militant group has extended its reach from safe havens in civil-war-ravaged Syria across the Iraqi border. Paramedics from the United Hatzalah and Magen David Adom emergency organizations rushed to the scene, after a massive explosion was heard. Three people were injured and have been evacuated for further medical treatment after receiving first aid. Medical sources described two of the victims as males, aged 25 and 26, who suffered shrapnel injuries to their extremities. They have been evacuated to the Kaplan Medical Center in Rehovot. The third victim, a 40-year-old woman, suffered injuries to her torso,

The thing to remember about the cataract of woe that has befallen our country is how fast things can be turned around. We may be in retreat overseas, with riots simmering in Missouri and the economy stuck in second gear. With the right policies, the right leadership, all that can be overcome. It can be turned around, and fast — a fact we’re not hearing pointedly enough for my taste. I like Rick Perry, Rand Paul, Paul Ryan, Ted Cruz, Mitt Romney, Marco Rubio. But none of the GOP contenders is capturing this simple point — that we can pull out of this

Scott Brown is back in the ballgame. The former Massachusetts senator had appeared to be fading in his bid to defeat incumbent Democratic Sen. In the WMUR/UNH survey released Thursday night, Shaheen led Brown by 46 percent to 44 percent, which is within the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points. This latest numbers show a dramatic swing in Brown’s direction from the previous WMUR/UNH poll, which was conducted a month-and-a-half earlier and showed Shaheen leading Brown by

The attention all of this brings will, according to Missouri Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson, “make it better for our sons to be better black men.” Pardon me for asking the question, but should we be teaching our children to become better white men, brown men, or black men rather than simply becoming better men and better American citizens? David Ricardo´s Theory of Comparative Advantage has broken down after 200 years, or so I learned at the Lindau forum of Nobel laureates in Bavaria. The theory published in 1817 has been a guiding principle of free trade, taken as a given by every student of economics in the modern era. It has served us well, but just as Newton´s theory of gravity ran into limits and was overtaken by Einstein´s relativity, comparative advantage no longer explains the world. Under Ricardo´s model, inequality was supposed to narrow within countries as globalisation accelerated exponentially in the Nineties. Instead it is getting wider.

The mathematics of civil disobedience has always been pretty straightforward: As Mohandas Gandhi pointed out to the raj, 100,000 government officials cannot control 350 million citizens if the citizens do not cooperate. There are not enough police in St. Louis County to control the people who do not wish to be controlled by the police in St. Louis County, as least as currently constituted. There are two ways to govern: By consent or by terror. In the United States, we govern by consent. (Mostly.) We spend altogether too much time talking about sentiment, e.g., polling Americans about whether they feel that the

A Hamas official has said for the first time that members of the Palestinian Islamist group were responsible for the abduction of three Israeli teenagers whose murders ignited the current conflict with Israel. Sheikh Saleh al-Aruri, who is exiled in Turkey, told a conference of Islamic scholars in Istanbul that Gilad Shaar, Naftali Frenkel, both aged 16, and Eyal Yifrach, 19, had been seized by the Izzedine al-Qassam brigades, Hamas´ military wing. Hamas’s war with Israel is not a stand-alone event. It is happening in the context of the vast changes that are casting asunder old patterns of behavior and strategic understandings as actors in the region begin to reassess the threats they face. Hamas was once funded by Saudi Arabia and enabled by Egypt. Now the regimes of these countries view it as part of a larger axis of Sunni jihad that threatens not only Israel, but them. The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, and its state sponsors Qatar and Turkey, are the key members of this alliance structure. Without their support
