Islamic State cannot be defeated without addressing “both sides of what is essentially at this point a nonexistent border” between Iraq and Syria, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Thursday. The United States and its allies in the Middle East and beyond need to join together to defeat the terrorist group “over time,” Gen. Martin Dempsey said. Asked whether the United States would extend its current campaign of airstrikes in Iraq into Syria, Dempsey said airstrikes were “only one small part” of what is necessary to defeat the group. “I’m not predicting those will occur in Syria,

In response to a series of scandals involving mistreatment of children under state supervision, Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday signed into law new rules giving county social workers access to the criminal histories of foster parents and employees at foster care contractors before abused and neglected children are placed in their care. The legislation, SB 1136, comes in response to Times reports documenting instances when children were harmed and taxpayer money was allegedly misspent by people with criminal backgrounds who had been granted special waivers from the state to receive foster children.

Baghdad called President Obama’s bluff and he came through. He had refused to provide air support to Iraqi government forces until the Iraqis got rid of their divisive sectarian prime minister. They did. He responded. With the support of U.S. airstrikes, Iraqi and Kurdish forces have retaken the Mosul dam. Previous strikes had relieved the siege of Mount Sinjar and helped the Kurds retake two strategic towns that had opened the road to a possible Islamic State assault on Irbil, the capital of Kurdistan. In following through, Obama demonstrated three things: the effectiveness of even limited U.S. power, the vulnerability

Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) called on President Obama to stop downplaying the threat presented by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). “The president is wrong to continue to downplay this threat by saying that ISIS is claiming to be at war with America merely out of expediency, or that ISIS is motivated by sheer ‘nihilism,’” Pompeo said on Wednesday. “This is not a ‘J.V. team,’ as the president has put it. ISIS is an army of cold-blooded killers motivated by radical Islam.” Pompeo’s remarks came after Obama spoke about the beheading of American journalist James Foley by the

Charles Krauthammer said Thursday on "Special Report with Bret Baier" that controversy surrounding the idea of putting American troops on the ground in Iraq is a "red herring," adding the U.S. needs to instead launch an air war against the Islamic State militants. Krauthammer, a syndicated columnist and a Fox News contributor, said there is "no reason" the U.S. cannot provide air cover for the boots already on the ground helping the Peshmerga, the Kurds and the special forces of Iraq fight the terrorists. "It’s about a war on these people which doesn’t mean boots on the ground," he said.

Earlier in August, residents and visitors of Martha’s Vineyard saw an unusual creature cohabitating with the Island’s native species: a seven-foot tall polar bear. The bear, who goes by the name of Frostpaw, is the face of Center for Biological Diversity’s campaign to fight climate change. Virginia Voters Alliance, an election integrity group, has called attention to the surprising amount of duplicate voter registrations in Maryland and Virginia, challenging the view that voter fraud is nonexistent, Watchdog reports. According to the Virginia Voters Alliance (VVA), the state has decided to term these as inactive voters, meaning that they join the total of 43,896 Virginia and Maryland voters who are eligible to vote up until 2019. As state officials have taken little action, Fairfax General Registrar Cameron Quinn has announced she intends to step in, although since there are an estimated 14,646 duplicate registrations, it’s a race

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters Thursday her department would never have willingly revealed the failed U.S. attempt to rescue American journalist James Foley from Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS), and that she has “no idea” who leaked the information to the press. The report, citing U.S. officials, came to light Wednesday, after Foley was beheaded by ISIL. “We had no intention of ever making this public, period — I want to be very clear about that — for the operational security both of the special operators and also of the remaining hostages,” Harf said. Pennsylvania resident Tiffany Bruce checked into a hospital after she discovered that her life-size Obama statue was missing. The $1,249 statue that she kept outside her house on a bench was a staple in the neighborhood, as the family gave him a Halloween costume and dressed him up as Santa Claus for Halloween. “I peeked my head out the door, and Obama’s gone, and I kind of went into a panic. I couldn’t breathe, and I had to go to the hospital,” Bruce told KFOR, a local news station. The statue was found Thursday at the Francis E. Walter Dam, sitting on a bench with a six pack of beer.

All were awaiting the outcome of deportation proceedings.

For the life of me, I can´t figure out why this was necessary information to reveal, beyond the fact that it was a cheap way of convincing the American people that Obama had been concerned about Foley´s plight. Global warming slowdown

The hiatus in the rise in global temperatures could last for another 10 years, according to new research. Scientists have struggled to explain the so-called pause that began in 1999, despite ever increasing levels of CO2 in the atmosphere. The latest theory says that a naturally occurring 30-year cycle in the Atlantic Ocean is behind the slowdown. The researchers says this slow-moving current could continue to divert heat into the deep seas for another decade. However, they caution that global temperatures are likely to increase rapidly when the cycle flips to a warmer phase. Continue reading the main story “

US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel told reporters that ISIS “is beyond anything we have seen … They marry ideology and a sophistication of strategic and tactical military prowess. They are tremendously well funded.” Hagel’s realization that it’s beyond Obama’s ken is understandable. You really can’t see much from the 18th hole. ISIS and the riots in Ferguson are examples of emergent events, which happens when big things suddenly constitute themselves out of a myriad of seemingly harmless little things and become something much larger than the original. It is the result of “a process whereby larger entities, patterns, and

Montana Democrats are banking on a long-shot liberal Senate candidate to replace the disgraced John Walsh, but their choice might be too radical even for the increasingly extreme party. Democrats are hoping that Montana state representative Amanda Curtis will be the next Elizabeth Warren: an outspoken and unapologetic liberal who can fire up the base and raise big bucks from like-minded benefactors. A self-described “punktuator” who has been seen sporting a mohawk and studded denim jacket with the iconic anarchist “A,” Curtis is certainly distinct from most Montana politicians.

Not only did the body scanners at some U.S. airports expose a traveler’s every line and curve, they weren’t very good at finding weapons, researchers say. Guns, knives and faux explosives were among the contraband snuck past the backscatter X-ray by researchers at the University of California, San Diego, the University of Michigan and Johns Hopkins University, who bought a surplus Rapiscan Secure 1000 off of eBay. The machine was still wrapped in plastic when J. Alex Halderman and others on the research team bought it from a seller in Europe for about $50,000, he told the Daily News.

Analysis: Israel´s killing of

The assassination of three of Hamas’s most important military commanders in an Israeli air strike is the worst and most painful blow dealt to the movement’s armed wing, Izzadin Kassam, in recent years. The last time Izzadin Kassam suffered a major blow was when Israel killed its general commander, Ahmed Jabari, in November 2012. The killing of the three Hamas commanders in a pre-dawn strike on a house in Rafah came less than 48 hours after the IAF targeted a house in Gaza City where Muhammad Deif, Izzadin Kassam’s “chief of staff,” was believed to be staying together with his wife and children.

Robertson claims that she was the only black senior editor in the magazine’s history until she was laid off in May, and that only four of its “approximately” 110 employees are black. Robertson specifically named People’s executive editor Betsy Gleick in the suit, saying Gleick told her in an early performance evaluation to

Washington - President Obama´s decision to exchange captive Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for five Guantanamo Bay detainees violated federal law, according to a legal opinion the Government Accountability Office sent to Congress Thursday. That´s because the administration failed to notify Congress at least 30 days before the transfer, as required under a law passed in February. The Pentagon notified Congress of the deal on May 31, the same day the transfer was made. And because Congress did not authorize spending for the exchange, it also violated the Antideficiency Act, a law intended to protect Congress´s power of the purse.
