Switzerland has long had a permissive law on assisted suicide, and a new study has found an increase in the number of people from other countries traveling to Switzerland to end their lives under the auspices of right-to-die organizations. The study, published in The Journal of Medical Ethics, looked at assisted suicides in Zurich, where Dignitas, the most prominent right-to-die organization, is based. The researchers found that 611 people from 31 countries had committed assisted suicide from 2008 to 2012. Since 2009, the number of those arriving from other countries for help with suicide has increased steadily, to 172 in 2012.

President Barack Obama sent U.S. troops to Syria earlier this summer to rescue a number of Americans held by a violent extremist group, including slain journalist James Foley, but did not find the hostages, senior Obama administration officials said Wednesday. The officials said the rescue mission was authorized after intelligence agencies believed they had identified the location inside Syria where the hostages were being held. But the several dozen special operations troops who were dropped by aircraft into Syria did not find them engaged in a firefight with Islamic State militants before departing. The officials said a number of militants but no

The jihadists who savagely took the life of an American journalist sent his employer an e-mail a week earlier threatening the execution. “We received an email from the captors on Wednesday night of last week stating their intention to execute Jim,” Philip Balboni, the founder of the online news service site Global Post, told WCVB Boston. “The email was full of rage.” The White House knew about the threat against Foley’s life and did not engage in negotiations with the terrorists, Balbonio said. Balboni said he had been working behind the scenes since James Foley’s capture in 2012 to try to free him, spending millions of dollars in

PJ Media has been covering the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division for years. PJ Media had to sue Eric Holder to obtain the resumes of the lawyers he hired to populate this unit. No wonder. The “Every Single One” series at PJ Media revealed that all of Holder’s attorney hires were leftists, some even with a history of anti-police activities. Mr. Holder traveled to Ferguson, Mo., on Wednesday in an attempt to assure residents that the Justice Department was thoroughly investigating the shooting of Michael Brown, which set off more than a week of protests and confrontations with police. If there’s one thing that has epitomized the relationship between the White House and the Republican-controlled House over the past three and a half years, it has been the extent to which showdown politics has become a regular part of governing in Washington. Less than six months after the GOP took control of the lower chamber of Congress, Washington was gripped by a showdown over the budget and the extension of the debt ceiling that lasted right up until the last minute and resulted in a deal that nobody really liked, but which supposedly would never really be implemented because of the “super committee” that would solve all our

Henin said Foley was met with “brutal punishment” inspired both by his captor’s suspicions and, as Henin put it, “the American war

How does a grand jury

What goes on inside a grand jury room is secret. The prosecutor presents the evidence. No judge is in the room. No defense lawyer. The accused is invited to testify, but his lawyer can´t be in the room. Grand juries are known for doing what a prosecutor wants. As the old saying goes, a grand jury would indict a ham sandwich if that´s what the prosecutor asked. Prosecutors feeling the heat in a controversial case, some say, can avoid making a decision and give it to a grand jury. The standing grand jury in St. Louis County meets every Wednesday during a
