I began to lose interest in Ferguson, Mo., when it was first reported that the late Michael Brown was an “aspiring rapper.” Hadn’t heard that one yet? It was in the LA Times, under the headline: “Michael Brown’s raps: Money, sex, drugs — and a vulnerable side.” Of course he had to have a vulnerable side. That’s why he was known as “the Gentle Giant.” He didn’t look terribly gentle in that closed-circuit video, shoving the owner of the Ferguson Market when he was stealing the box of Swisher Sweets just before he got shot. But the demonstrators could see right through that

Why is Obama disconnected, directionless?

Foreign policy successes have been rare for the current White House so it was surprising this week to see President Barack Obama take something of a victory lap over the apparent success of efforts to beat back Islamic radical advances in Iraq. But it certainly made sense for the president to take satisfaction where he could because beyond that small victory, Obama´s presidency seems disconnected and directionless. Obama made his remarks on Iraq during a brief break from his Martha´s Vineyard vacation. But instead of looking rested, the president appeared fatigued and frustrated, particularly over the continued clashes between police and

Jason Carter wants to follow in his famous grandfather’s footsteps. Mr. Carter, a Democrat, is running for governor of Georgia, a position Jimmy Carter held for a term before moving on to the White House. Jason Carter is willing to say pretty much whatever it takes to win. When someone asks his opinions on homosexual demands, he dodges, weaves and deflects, eager not to offend religiously conservative Georgia. But his gay supporters are saying it for him. Georgia remains committed to traditional marriage. The left-leaning Public Policy Polling discovered last year that 6 of 10 Georgia voters want to keep

"No justice, no peace,” scream protesters in Ferguson, Missouri. Implicit in this menacing chant is that the rioting on display there for over a week has been justified. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, among other hucksters, disclaim the violence, even as they stoke it with reckless rhetoric. They aren’t interested in peace but power. Were they truly opposed to the violence, they wouldn’t coin chants that condone it. “We’re not looters. We’re liberators,” says Sharpton. Liberating society from what? The rule of law? His view of justice is that the law be permanently suspended for the racially aggrieved. A police department

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The final contested Senate GOP primary of 2014 came to a close Tuesday, with Dan Sullivan leading with more than two-thirds of the ballots counted. The winner will take on Democratic Sen. Mark Begich in one of the 10 top competitive races that will determine control of the U.S. Senate next year. Begich faced only token opposition in the Democratic primary, and was declared the winner shortly after polls closed. The GOP nomination battle followed a familiar political narrative this year, pitting establishment and Tea Party Republicans against each other in a race heavily influenced by outside forces and

LAS VEGAS — Harry Reid’s reelection is more than two years off, but the Koch brothers’ political machine is already methodically laying the groundwork that will be used to try to take him out. The efforts in recent months have been largely subterranean, but they are unmistakable. A handful of nonprofit groups in the vast political network helmed by allies of the conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch have established or expanded permanent ground operations in Reid’s backyard. Focused on wooing key demographics like Latinos and veterans, they’ve also paid for ads assailing the Senate Democratic leader. Reid, meanwhile, is ramping up

No one wants to smell like Eau de Brat. Perfume giant Elizabeth Arden blamed pop singers Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift for stinking up financial results in the latest quarter. Arden’s stock tanked nearly 25 percent on Tuesday after the company cited a worse-than-expected slide in its celebrity fragrance business — namely, two of its biggest stars. “The decline in sales of celebrity fragrances, particularly the Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift fragrances, was steeper than anticipated,” the company said in a statement. Sales for the quarter ended June 30 fell 28.4 percent from last year to $191.7 million after it introduced fewer new fragrances

By Texas law, grand jurors are not supposed to talk to the media about their cases. That did not stop several of the Gov. Perry grand jurors from breaking the law, specifically, talking to the Houston Chronicle. The jury, which met weekly for four months, “really tried to keep an open mind and come to a fair decision given all the testimony that we heard,” said Janna Bessin, one of the 12 Travis County residents appointed to serve on the grand jury. “It’s too bad,” Bessin said, calling the criticism unfair. “But I guess that his side’s job – to really spin it.” The

It was ridiculous and wrong for police snipers to train their weapons on peaceful protestors in Ferguson. But, when you get right down to it, the militarization of police has had basically nothing to do with events there, even though the Left and parts of the Right have wanted to make that the main issue. When Darren Wilson shot Michael Brown, the officer was presumably wearing a typical police uniform and driving a typical police car. He either acted in entirely justifiable self-defense, made a catastrophic misjudgment after an altercation, or (in the extreme version of the protestors) shot Brown

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he spoke Tuesday with President Obama and "everything is fine" following a newspaper report describing him as feeling snubbed during a recent White House meeting. The Nevada Democrat said he had a long conversation with Obama. He did not refute Monday´s story in The New York Times that begins with an account of an Oval Office meeting in which the president apparently cut off Reid when he tried to complain about Senate Republicans blocking presidential nominations. However, Reid, the Senate’s top Democrat, downplayed the significance of the story, the larger narrative of which was that Democrats

Before a video surfaced online appearing to show the brutal murder of American journalist James Foley, U.S. officials made repeated efforts to win freedom for Foley, attempting to identify and reach his captors through Turkish, Russian and Czech intermediaries. While officials continue to study and try to authenticate the grisly video that appears to show Foley’s execution at the hands of a captor from the Islamic jihadist group ISIS, details are now starting to emerge about the fevered efforts to gain his release. WASHINGTON -- In a horrifying act of revenge for U.S. airstrikes in northern Iraq, militants with the Islamic State extremist group have beheaded American journalist James Foley - and are threatening to kill another hostage, U.S. officials say. The White House must now weigh the risks of adopting an aggressive policy to destroy the Islamic State against resisting any action that could result in the death of another American. It will also confront the potentially necessary step of pursuing the Islamic State in Syria, where President Barack Obama has resisted launching airstrikes or deploying significant American firepower. WASHINGTON — Affectations can be dangerous, as Gertrude Stein said. When Barack Obama first ran for president, he theatrically cast himself as the man alone on the stage. From his address in Berlin to his acceptance speech in Chicago, he eschewed ornaments and other politicians, conveying the sense that he was above the grubby political scene, unearthly and apart. He began “Dreams From My Father” with a description of his time living on the Upper East Side while he was a student at Columbia, savoring his lone-wolf existence. He was, he wrote, “prone to see other people as unnecessary distractions.”

FERGUSON, Mo. — As a county grand jury prepared to hear evidence on Wednesday in the shooting death of a black teenager by a white police officer that touched off 10 days of unrest here, witnesses have given investigators sharply conflicting accounts of the killing. Some of the accounts seem to agree on how the fatal altercation initially unfolded: with a struggle between the officer, Darren Wilson, and the teenager, Michael Brown. Officer Wilson was inside his patrol car at the time, while Mr. Brown, who was unarmed, was leaning in through an open window. Many witnesses also agreed on

WHY is the world silent while Christians are being slaughtered in the Middle East and Africa? In Europe and in the United States, we have witnessed demonstrations over the tragic deaths of Palestinians who have been used as human shields by Hamas, the terrorist organization that controls Gaza. The United Nations has held inquiries and focuses its anger on Israel for defending itself against that same terrorist organization. But the barbarous slaughter of thousands upon thousands of Christians is met with relative indifference. The Middle East and parts of central Africa are losing entire Christian communities that have lived in

Perry, who wore a dark suit and blue tie, had his fingerprints and a mug shot taken. The governor smiled slightly in his booking picture, which he took without his glasses on.
