Pardo was best known for his voiceover announcing “It’s Saturday Night Live!” Pardo was born in 1918 in Westfield, Mass., and his career first began in radio in 1938. The announcer was hired by NBC in 1944, and along with Bob Hope and Milton Berle, he was one of only three people ever to be offered lifetime contracts with NBC. Correction: An earlier version of this post mislabeled the second-largest spending category on children. It is childcare and education. It will cost an average middle-income family nearly a quarter-million dollars to raise a child in 2013 to adulthood. Food, housing, childcare, education and other expenses will total $245,340 by the time the child turns 18, the Department of Agriculture estimates in a new report. That is a 1.8 percent increase over the year before. In 2013 alone, the cost of caring for a child ranges from $12,800 to $14,970. The report relies on data from the Labor Department’s Consumer Expenditure Survey,

Before Texas Governor Rick Perry´s criminal indictment, before national attention turned its focus to the state capital Austin and Perry´s 2016 presidential ambitions - Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg was arrested for drunk driving. Lehmberg, a Democrat, is one of the most powerful prosecutors in the state. She had a blood alcohol level of 0.239percent - nearly three times the legal limit - when she was arrested in April 2013. Jailhouse video shows her drunk, belligerent, threatening officers, kicking the door of her cell and repeatedly trying to pull rank in the Travis County Detention Center.

Washington - A specially equipped U.S. ship has finished neutralizing all 600 metric tons of the most dangerous of Syria´s chemical weapons components surrendered to the international community this year to avert threatened air strikes, the Pentagon said on Monday. It said the Cape Ray, equipped with the U.S.-developed Field Deployable Hydrolysis System, neutralized 581.5 metric tons of DF, a sarin precursor chemical, and 19.8 metric tons of HD, an ingredient of sulfur mustard, while afloat in the Mediterranean. Damascus agreed last September to a Russian proposal to give up its chemical weapons to avert threatened military strikes

Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas commented on Monday evening for the first time about the Israel Security Agency’s (Shin Bet) revelation that it foiled a Hamas network´s plot to carry out a coup in Judea and Samaria. In a statement quoted on Channel 2 News, Abbas said that the implications of the revealed plot “will be serious for the Palestinian and regional situation, especially after Israeli officials published a list and pictures of confiscated weapons." Abbas stressed that the reports endanger the unity of the Palestinian people as its leadership tries to form a unity government. "We are living

Tired of her kids ignoring her phone calls, this Texas mom taught herself how to develop an app and created “Ignore No More.” “We need to develop an app that just shuts their phone completely down and they can’t even use it,” Sharon Standifird, a mother of two, told ABC 13. “I got on the Internet and I literally just started researching how to develop an app.” Once parents install the app, they will be able to take control of their children’s smartphones when they believe their phone calls or messages are being ignored. The wrong-headed case

THERE ARE MANY fair grounds on which to criticize Rick Perry’s performance as governor of Texas: his rejection of federal funding for Medicaid expansion and his grandstanding deployment of the state’s National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, to name just two. But the list does not include the charges newly levied against him by an Austin grand jury. It’s true that the case revolves around bare-knuckled tactics by Mr. Perry (R). Last year, he threatened to veto $7.5 million in funding for the prosecutorial unit in Austin that investigates public corruption, unless that unit’s boss, an elected Democratic district

Kurdish peshmerga forces backed by American fighter jets recaptured Iraq´s largest dam from the Islamic State on Monday, in what US President Barack Obama called a "major step forward" in the fight against the jihadists. Local forces seized control of the dam after dismantling a complicated network of land mines and booby traps lain by the Islamic State fighters, who had themselves fled the area earlier in the day after a sortie of airstrikes by American F-18 fighter jets. Vice President Joe Biden’s office stonewalled a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for his travel expenses, according to Ronald Kessler’s new tell-all book on the Secret Service, The First Family Detail. Kessler, a former Wall Street Journal and Washington Post investigative reporter, filed a FOIA request in April 2013 with the Air Force for the details and costs of Biden’s personal trips. “But in what amounts to a cover-up on behalf of the vice president, on June 6, Biden’s office blocked transmitting the results to me and told Air Force officers they were not to comment to anyone about the case,”

A White House pool report said his deputy chief of staff Anita Decker Breckenridge also joined him for the dinner. No other details were provided. Obama flew back to Washington from Martha´s Vineyard, Mass. on Sunday night, breaking up his two-week vacation. But it is unclear if Monday night´s dinner is the reason Obama made the trip back to Washington before he returns to Martha´s Vineyard to resume his vacation on Tuesday.

Utah officials are scrambling to prevent the Obama administration from locking down thousands of acres of land in their backyard, as federal officials consider up to a dozen possible national monument designations – all in western states. The Antiquities Act gives U.S. presidents the authority to unilaterally declare public lands as national monuments at the stroke of a pen, with no input from the public unless they choose to seek it. Many national monuments eventually go on to become national parks. National Parks Conservation Association spokeswoman Kristen Brengel said the practice has been used for over a century to preserve
