Conservative readers question me on a regular basis about why the Daily Inter Lake publishes the somewhat confrontational column by liberal Gene Lyons every week. The straightforward answer is because liberals exist and therefore they need a column to read. Far be it from me to shut down the free exchange of ideas.(SNIP)What brings me out of the closet as a Lyons reader, however, is last Thursday’s column in which he bravely but foolishly defended the bedraggled climate scientist Michael Mann from the ripostes of Mark Steyn, perhaps the most capably armed social critic since Edmund Wilson.According to Lyons, Steyn

So that’s all right then. We can all relax, and go back to playing boules. The Yazidi are apparently off the mountain, there’s a nice new Iraqi prime minister in office, Isis have been stalled outside Irbil, and Hitler has agreed to watch the fifth Test match with an eye to mastering the rules of LBW. Except, it’s not all right, is it. MONROVIA, Liberia - Armed men attacked an Ebola clinic in Monrovia, local witnesses told Agence France Presse. As many as 29 potentially Ebola-infected patients fled, the news agency reported. "They broke down the doors and looted the place. The patients all fled," said Rebecca Wesseh, who witnessed the attack and whose report was confirmed by residents and the head of Health Workers Association of Liberian, George Williams. The attack comes just one day after a report of a crowd of several hundred local residents, chanting, ´No Ebola in West Point,´ drove away a burial team and their police escort that had

Ferguson, Mo. - A small group of protesters, with outside agitators among them, defied a curfew here Saturday night, clashing with police a week after the shooting death of the unarmed Michael Brown at the hands of a Ferguson police officer. Seven people were arrested and one person was shot and critically wounded by an unknown gunman. Members of the Revolution Club of Chicago helped to gin up support for resistance to the curfew, imposed by Gov. Jay Nixon earlier in the day and set to begin at midnight. Shortly after 12 a.m. members of the group and residents advanced toward police, who for the first time since the

A British Army colonel´s life was saved by a US soldier who jumped in front of an assassin´s hail of bullets, it has been reported. The US Army reservist, who normally works for Apple, the Silicon Valley-based electronics company, was shot six times as an Afghan assailant opened fire on a group of high-ranking officers at a military training academy earlier this month, The Sunday Times said. The reservist, who has not been named, used his body as a shield to literally "take a bullet" for the senior British officer, and was hit twice in the leg and once in the shoulder, with a further three rounds stopped by his bulletproof vest.

On Saturday’s “Justice with Judge Jeanine” in her “Opening Statement” segment, host Jeanine Pirro slammed the indictment of Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) by a grand jury empaneled by Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg, who Pirro described as a “drunk.” “A famous court of appeals judge once said a grand jury could indict a ham sandwich. Now, I believe in the rule of law, but I’m not going to sugar coat this one. The indictment of Texas Gov. A ?friend who is conservative and ?Jewish asks a question: “Given ?Obama’s hostile treatment of ?Israel, isn’t it time for Jews to have their Ronald Reagan moment?” By that, he means when the Gipper said, “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party. The party left me.” Without doubt, the party under Barack Obama has left those Jews who view Israel’s security as threatened. Obama recently told a New York Times interviewer, “Because Israel is so capable militarily, I don’t worry about Israel’s survival.” That’s shocking, considering Iran’s threat to wipe Israel off the map once it gets nukes. One of the fascinating layers of the Ferguson riot story is how this tragedy has exposed what is a rapidly changing attitudinal climate towards law enforcement officers (LEOs). What was for years a stable predicate -- conservatives being reflexively ‘law and order’ and inherently giving cops the benefit of the doubt -- while liberals with the built in ACLU type disdain for cops tending to always assume the worst of those in power – is now a vortex of confusion, cross currents, and contradictions. It’s not a total flip-flop of the convention, but it’s moving in that direction. After all, we’ve seen

A new report released by New Jersey authorities shows that taxpayers are being socked with a $6.5 million legal bill in part for Gov. Chris Christie´s (R) defense over allegations of political corruption in what came to be known as the "Bridgegate" probe. The New Jersey state attorney general released the documents on Friday, revealing the fees from Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, the firm Gov. Christie retained for his defense against charges of political corruption for the temporary shutting down of the George Washington Bridge near Fort Lee, New Jersey in September of 2013.

According to details leaked by Egyptian newspaper al-Shorouk, the 11-clause proposal contained several key concessions to the Palestinian delegation, including the opening of border crossings between Israel and Gaza, the elimination of the so-called "buffer zones" along the Israel-Gaza border, the extension of the fishing zone to 12 miles off the Gazan coast, and the assistance of Israel and the Palestinian Authority in rebuilding the

I live in the northeast Georgia area. I’ve spoken often -- to God and man -- of how blessed and thankful I am to have been born in the greatest nation the world has ever known. Not only that, but I’ve also been extremely blessed to have grown up in one of the most conservative and one of the most Christ-influenced areas in the United States. My political district is the Georgia Ninth. According to the Cook Partisan Voting Index, Georgia’s Ninth is currently the third most Republican district in the U.S. Yes, Republican doesn’t always imply conservative (and certainly doesn’t imply Christian), but of course, conservative -- especially conservative

The sandstone cliffs of Afghanistan´s Bamiyan province are most famous for the giant 6th century Buddha statues carved out of the rock and destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. The monks who created them also dug out numerous caves in the Bamiyan valley. Originally used for meditation and retreat, some of these caves are now home to around 700 Afghan families who have no land and can´t afford conventional housing. Ramazan and his wife Zahra have been living here for eight years. Their son and two daughters were born in the caves. Like most of the local children they don't go to school. Many of us recall the baseless indictment of then House Majority Leader Tom DeLay by then Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle in connection with the indictment of Governor Perry yesterday, but does anyone recall the earlier case against Kay Bailey Hutchison brought by Earle? Serving as Texas state treasurer, Hutchison won 67 percent of the vote in the special election held on June 5, 1993, to fill the Senate seat that had

The Obama administration has done little to calm racial tensions as they spread from Manhattan to St. Louis to Los Angeles. Quite the opposite, some top officials have fueled African-American fears of racism with false accusations of anti-black discrimination. Attorney General Eric Holder’s race-baiting is no secret. Justice Department documents show the nation’s top cop gave thousands of dollars to help the Rev. Al Sharpton organize marches protesting the death of Trayvon Martin. Now he’s sent the civil-rights unit to St. Louis to do the same thing in the fatal shooting of Michael Brown. Less known, however, is the role of Labor Secretary Thomas

WASHINGTON — In this summer of global tumult, the debate in Washington essentially boils down to two opposite positions: It is all President Obama’s fault, according to his critics; no, it is not, according to his supporters, because these are events beyond his control. Americans often think of their president as an all-powerful figure who can command the tides of history — and presidents have encouraged this image over the years because the perception itself can be a form of power. But as his critics have made the case that Mr. Obama’s mistakes have fueled the turmoil in places like Syria,

The school received a bit of a break from the $300,000 Clinton requested during initial negotiations, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which obtained the emails that were sent last year.
