Things That Jeff Bridges Can´t Abide
Wall Street Journal, by Alexandra Wolfe    Original Article

One day earlier this week, the actor Jeff Bridges found himself sprinting through New York´s Central Park with his wife, Susan. The two had been taking a walk when they stopped to watch an acrobatic group. Without recognizing the actor, the performers grabbed his wife and pulled her into the ring for their next feat. Instead of standing by, Mr. Bridges yelled, "I´m a crazy white man, and I have an appointment, and I´m taking my girl with me!" Then he and his wife made a run for it. The 64-year-old actor was in town before the premiere of his latest

A dramatic photo captured the moment on Friday when a Brooklyn mugging victim became a crime fighter — as she busted the punk who allegedly snatched her cellphone and held him in a bear hug for the cops. Clara Vondrich, 36, was taking a business phone call while standing in front of a Williamsburg coffee shop on South Third Street at 1:20?p.m. when the teen approached her with two pals. The 13-year-old, whose name is being withheld by The Post because he is a minor, allegedly pushed her from behind, nearly knocking her to the ground. He ripped

President Obama is vacationing again in Marta Vineyard - playground of the 1% of the 1%. We have been assured that he is just as in charge there as he is in Washington, which is not very reassuring. He purportedly brought his brain trust with him for advice. That is not very reassuring either since that very limited group includes deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes (for his C.V. see this ). The media is also reporting that Anita Breckenbridge is his “top-ranking advisor” on the island with him - while the world “blows up” in Defense Secretary Hagel words.

PIERRE, S.D.— Laura Ingalls Wilder penned one of the most beloved children´s series of the 20th century, but her forthcoming autobiography will show devoted "Little House on the Prairie" fans a more realistic, grittier view of frontier living. "Prairie Girl: The Annotated Autobiography" — Wilder´s unedited draft that was written for an adult audience and eventually served as the foundation for the popular series — is slated to be released by the South Dakota State Historical Society Press nationwide this fall. The not-safe-for-children tales include stark scenes of domestic abuse, love triangles gone awry and a man who lit himself

FERGUSON, Missouri — Reporters trying to cover the renewed chaos in this town faced a new threat on Friday: the demonstrators themselves. Print, video and photo-journalists were all repeatedly and aggressively threatened and harassed when attempting to photograph or videotape any of the looting or property destruction. Many of the demonstrators expressed concern about being identified by police or told reporters that the looting was none of their concern. Police largely remained on the sidelines on Friday and into the dawn hours of Saturday morning as demonstrators descended on a number of businesses in Ferguson — pulling alcohol, lottery tickets, and

Friday A trip up to the charming town of Sandpoint. It went well except that our flight from SEA to Spokane was postponed for an hour. We took an earlier flight but then my wife’s luggage was not in Spokane. (Snip) We sat at the bar and next to us were two soldiers. One of them was quiet. The other was talkative. He wanted to know if I thought there was much of a future for civilization. “We Americans come from the Enlightenment,” he said. “But how many other countries have the values of respect for law, respect for human dignity, respect

The White House announced Friday that President Barack Obama will jet out to the small Eastern European country of Estonia in early September, before attending a NATO meeting in Wales. The trip is likely intended to deter Russian President Vladimir Putin from grabbing parts of Estonia and its two small neighbors, all of whom contain populations of ethnic Russians. All three countries are member of NATO, and are too small to block a determined Russian invasion. “In light of recent developments in Ukraine, the United States has taken steps to reassure allies in Central and Eastern Europe, and this trip

Defenders of Texas Gov. Rick Perry are stepping forward following his sudden indictment Friday on two felony counts of abuse-of-power charges, relating to the governor’s efforts last year to obtain the resignation of a Travis County district attorney. “Unfortunately, there has been a sad history of the Travis County District Attorney’s Office engaging in politically-motivated prosecutions, and this latest indictment of the governor is extremely questionable. Rick Perry is a friend, he’s a man of integrity — I am proud to stand with Rick Perry.” Sen Ted Cruz said in a statement on Saturday. “The Texas Constitution gives the governor

The saga of University of California, Santa Barbara feminist studies professor Mireille Miller-Young has taken yet another bizarro twist after her defenders urged a judge to excuse the criminal allegations against her because of the “cultural legacy of slavery.” Miller-Young pleaded no contest last month to misdemeanor counts of battery, theft and vandalism after she rallied up a small gaggle of female vigilantes and attacked abortion protesters Thrin Short, 16, and Joan Short, 21. The radical feminist armada forcibly stole a graphic anti-abortion sign from the two protesters. Miller-Young scratched and appeared to push the 16-year-old girl, then destroyed the

Lawmakers are targeting police with new and old pieces of legislation in the wake of riots in a St. Louis suburb sparked by the killing by a police officer of an unarmed black teenager. Much of the focus has been on the heavy military equipment many local police agencies have received from the Pentagon under a 1991 law meant to combat drug dealers. BALTIMORE — WHEN the American artist Ralph Barton killed himself in 1931 he left behind a suicide note explaining why, in the midst of a seemingly good and full life, he had chosen to die. “Everyone who has known me and who hears of this,” he wrote, “will have a different hypothesis to offer to explain why I did it.” Most of the explanations, about problems in his life, would be completely wrong, he predicted. “I have had few real difficulties,” he said, and “more than my share of affection and appreciation.”

Democrats are salivating over Friday’s indictment of Texas Governor Rick Perry, and for good reason. Their one bright hope for the cycle, Texas State Senator and gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis, has already done an early dive into the gutter, and their slate for the remaining up-ballot races is mediocre at best. They’re last shot might be a long shot, but that doesn’t mean they’re not going to try. Progressive grassroots juggernaut Battleground Texas is already fundraising off of the indictment. Now the president´s deputy chief of staff, Anita Decker Beckenridge is responsible for a high-pressure operation that´s a far cry from the early journeys she and Obama shared. Yesterday, Rick Perry was indicted on charges of abuse of official capacity and coercion of a public servant – felonies that could potentially result in a life sentence – after following through on his promise to veto state prosecutors investigating public corruption. The left-leaning advocacy group, Texans for Public Justice, has largely pushed the issue, which stems from Perry threatening to cut $7.5 million over two years from the public integrity unit in order to pressure Rosemary Lehmberg, the Travis County District Attorney whose office oversaw that unit, to resign after she was convicted of driving under the influence. I first heard "How Deep Is the Ocean" as a child, when my mother used to sing it to me as a bedtime lullaby. By morning, the mood was different. My family lived in the Roxbury area of Boston, near the Franklin Park Zoo, so I awoke to the sound of roaring lions. "How Deep Is the Ocean" [by Irving Berlin] is an unusual love song. All of the lyrics are posed as questions, except for "I´ll tell you no lie." Each question conveys emotional intensity—-whether posed from parent to child or between two lovers: "How far would I travel,

Although some Democrats are calling for Texas. Gov Rick Perry´s (R) resignation after he was indicted by a grand jury on Friday, a number of left-leaning observers immediately panned the allegations as unimpressive. Perry, an expected presidential candidate in 2016, is accused of "abuse of official capacity" and "coercion of [a] public servant" by publicly threatening to zero out a state prosecutor´s funding and then actually doing it. Several pundits, including former Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod, Clinton and Obama administration alum Jonathan Prince, Vox´s Matt Yglesias, and New York magazine´s Jonathan Chait, wrote on Twitter they couldn´t see what

TAMPA — Charlie Crist’s School Bus Tour may violate state law on use of school buses. Crist just finished a three-day tour on education spending, travelling in a bright yellow school bus with campaign staff and reporters. He hoped to emphasize education as an issue in the race with Gov. Rick Scott — an issue where he believes he has an advantage over Scott. The tour included small rallies and news conferences in seven cities where he bashed Scott for education cuts, arriving each time in the bus. The apparent snag is Chapter 316.72 of the Florida Statutes, which says

ISIS fighters seized the dam on the Tigris River on Aug. 7 as part of an offensive that has seen large swaths of Iraq fall to the Sunni militants. Sources told NBC News the decision to try retaking the dam came after intelligence showed ISIS
