The saga of University of California, Santa Barbara feminist studies professor Mireille Miller-Young has taken yet another bizarro twist after her defenders urged a judge to excuse the criminal allegations against her because of the “cultural legacy of slavery.” Miller-Young pleaded no contest last month to misdemeanor counts of battery, theft and vandalism after she rallied up a small gaggle of female vigilantes and attacked abortion protesters Thrin Short, 16, and Joan Short, 21. The radical feminist armada forcibly stole a graphic anti-abortion sign from the two protesters. Miller-Young scratched and appeared to push the 16-year-old girl, then destroyed the

Lawmakers are targeting police with new and old pieces of legislation in the wake of riots in a St. Louis suburb sparked by the killing by a police officer of an unarmed black teenager. Much of the focus has been on the heavy military equipment many local police agencies have received from the Pentagon under a 1991 law meant to combat drug dealers. (Snip) Other lawmakers have raised concerns about racial profiling and excessive force against African Americans by police. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) called for passage of his End Racial Profiling Act, which would bar federal funding for law enforcement agencies

The indictment of Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) on Friday shocked the political world and drew everything from tough defenses to calls for Perry to resign. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas), who is seen as a rising star and could run for governor himself someday, called on Perry to resign. Joaquin Castro ? @JoaquinCastrotx Follow For the sake of Texas, Governor Perry should resign following his indictment on two criminal felony counts involving abuse of office. 6:58 PM - 15 Aug 2014 Perry was indicted on two felony counts for allegedly abusing his veto power in an effort to force a Democratic prosecutor to resign. BALTIMORE — WHEN the American artist Ralph Barton killed himself in 1931 he left behind a suicide note explaining why, in the midst of a seemingly good and full life, he had chosen to die. “Everyone who has known me and who hears of this,” he wrote, “will have a different hypothesis to offer to explain why I did it.” Most of the explanations, about problems in his life, would be completely wrong, he predicted. “I have had few real difficulties,” he said, and “more than my share of affection and appreciation.”

Democrats are salivating over Friday’s indictment of Texas Governor Rick Perry, and for good reason. Their one bright hope for the cycle, Texas State Senator and gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis, has already done an early dive into the gutter, and their slate for the remaining up-ballot races is mediocre at best. They’re last shot might be a long shot, but that doesn’t mean they’re not going to try. Progressive grassroots juggernaut Battleground Texas is already fundraising off of the indictment. PJ Media has a copy of the e-mail sent by Battleground Texas almost immediately after the indictment was handed down:

EDGARTOWN - President Barack Obama´s top-ranking adviser on his vacation to Martha´s Vineyard is a former Illinois political operative who drove him around the state during his Senate campaign a decade ago and then was his personal secretary outside the Oval Office. Now the president´s deputy chief of staff, Anita Decker Beckenridge is responsible for a high-pressure operation that´s a far cry from the early journeys she and Obama shared. Breckenridge has known Obama since 2003, when the former aide to Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed on to his U.S. Senate campaign to introduce the state senator from Chicago to

Yesterday, Rick Perry was indicted on charges of abuse of official capacity and coercion of a public servant – felonies that could potentially result in a life sentence – after following through on his promise to veto state prosecutors investigating public corruption. The left-leaning advocacy group, Texans for Public Justice, has largely pushed the issue, which stems from Perry threatening to cut $7.5 million over two years from the public integrity unit in order to pressure Rosemary Lehmberg, the Travis County District Attorney whose office oversaw that unit, to resign after she was convicted of driving under the influence. I first heard "How Deep Is the Ocean" as a child, when my mother used to sing it to me as a bedtime lullaby. By morning, the mood was different. My family lived in the Roxbury area of Boston, near the Franklin Park Zoo, so I awoke to the sound of roaring lions. "How Deep Is the Ocean" [by Irving Berlin] is an unusual love song. All of the lyrics are posed as questions, except for "I´ll tell you no lie." Each question conveys emotional intensity—-whether posed from parent to child or between two lovers: "How far would I travel,

I’m going to call this the “J J Video” because a sharp Treeper catches the background conversation within a video of the Mike Brown shooting scene. However, probably unknown -or at least unnoticed- in the background of the video you can hear an audio conversation of a male eye witness to the shooting itself describing what he saw to another

Although some Democrats are calling for Texas. Gov Rick Perry´s (R) resignation after he was indicted by a grand jury on Friday, a number of left-leaning observers immediately panned the allegations as unimpressive. Perry, an expected presidential candidate in 2016, is accused of "abuse of official capacity" and "coercion of [a] public servant" by publicly threatening to zero out a state prosecutor´s funding and then actually doing it. Several pundits, including former Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod, Clinton and Obama administration alum Jonathan Prince, Vox´s Matt Yglesias, and New York magazine´s Jonathan Chait, wrote on Twitter they couldn´t see what

TAMPA — Charlie Crist’s School Bus Tour may violate state law on use of school buses. Crist just finished a three-day tour on education spending, travelling in a bright yellow school bus with campaign staff and reporters. He hoped to emphasize education as an issue in the race with Gov. Rick Scott — an issue where he believes he has an advantage over Scott. The tour included small rallies and news conferences in seven cities where he bashed Scott for education cuts, arriving each time in the bus. The apparent snag is Chapter 316.72 of the Florida Statutes, which says

History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes, quipped Mark Twain. As with most of Twain’s homilies, it’s funny because it’s true. So as the world commemorates the Guns of August—that is, the start of World War I-- history is not repeating itself. But the world today does seem to have a certain poetic, unrhymed iambic pentameter in common with the Great War. “With a dimming of the lights and ceremonies across this country and in Belgium, monarchs, princes, presidents and citizens prepared on Monday to mark the day 100 years ago when Britain entered World War I at the start of four years

A grand jury in Travis County, Texas, indicted Governor Rick Perry today. Why? For exercising his constitutional prerogative by threatening to veto, and then vetoing, an appropriation to support the public corruption unit in Travis County’s district attorney’s office. This followed the arrest of the county’s district attorney, Democratic Party activist Rosemary Lehmberg, for drunk driving, after she was found “with an open bottle of vodka in the front passenger seat of her car in a church parking lot in Austin.” Ms. Lehmberg served 45 days in jail. The Travis County district attorney’s office has long been a cesspool of corruption.

Ferguson, Mo. — Score one for the Beltway media. After several nights of intense community outrage over the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, it wasn’t until two Washington-based reporters from The Huffington Post and The Washington Post were arrested by heavily armed local police that the political class in D.C. and Jefferson City started paying attention. Days of Twitter dispatches and Instagram videos from the protesters themselves had done little to change police behavior.
