Who Lost the Cities?

The Reverend Jesse Jackson is, to the surprise of all thinking people, right about something: “A spark has exploded,” he said, referring to the protests and violence in Ferguson, Mo. “When you look at what sparked riots in the Sixties, it has always been some combination of poverty, which was the fuel, and then some oppressive police tactic. It was the same in Newark, in Chicago, in Detroit, in Los Angeles. It’s symptomatic of a national crisis of urban abandonment and repression, seen in Chicago.” A question for the Reverend Jackson: Who has been running the show in Newark, in Chicago,

No one could have seen this coming. In early August, President Barack Obama revealed that he had approved targeted airstrikes on ISIS targets in Iraq. The strikes were aimed at both halting the Islamic State’s advance on cities like Erbil and Baghdad, where American diplomatic and military assets were stationed, and to relieve the pressure on Iraqi minority groups targeted by ISIS for extermination or displacement. Some military analysts noted, however, that the president will be unable to achieve the objective of eliminating the ISIS threat, rather than simply disrupting the group’s operational tempo, unless he expanded the theater of operations

(Tweet from David Frum) Can you imagine what Ferguson would look like if all these demonstrators were armed? It’s a question that’s popped up in my Twitter feed in various forms over the past few days. And as my colleague Mollie Hemingway has already done a fine job of pointing out, many in the media revealed they have only a muddled understanding of gun rights. But let’s go with David Frum’s hypothetical proposition, because it brings to mind a few broader points. Yes, if all protestors had loaded firearms in their hands, the situation would almost certainly have degenerated into

An email obtained by Congress shows the top official for Healthcare.gov at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services under the Department of Health and Human Services, Marilyn Tavenner, instructed the agency’s top spokesman to “Please delete this email.”The instruction appears significant for several reasons: First, the email to be deleted included an exchange between key White House officials and CMS officials. Second, the email was dated October 5, 2013, five days into the disastrous launch of HealthCare.gov. Third, federal law requires federal officials to retain copies of –not delete– email exchanges. And fourth, the document to be deleted is

Sen. Kay Hagan´s (D-NC) position on immigration seems to correlate with how close she is to facing voters at the ballot box. “I oppose amnesty,” Hagan said during a June 21, 2008 debate against then-incumbent Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC): We have got to secure the border. This too is one of the biggest domestic issues facing our country today, and we’re very late to the plate to do something about it. We’ve got to have more border security patrol officers. We’ve got to do what’s necessary to secure it, whether it’s a fence in certain places, whether it’s technology, whether we use

It was not immediately clear where Sasha Obama, the younger Obama daughter, was during the family outing. Sasha did not accompany her family to Martha´s Vineyard when they left Washington, D.C. last Saturday. The White House has said she´ll be joining her family for part of their two-week summer vacation,

Senate Majority PAC, far and away the biggest-spending super political action committee of the election cycle — at nearly $25 million — has begun pouring millions of dollars into Michigan, Iowa and Colorado, signaling just how quickly Democrats have shifted to defense heading into November’s elections. The super PAC, which has deep ties to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, is increasingly limiting its offensive efforts and is instead trying to create a firewall in Colorado, Michigan and even New Hampshire, hoping to halt a potential GOP wave that would net Republicans the six seats needed to capture the the chamber and remove

Berlin - German security agents recorded a conversation involving Hillary Clinton while she was U.S. Secretary of State, media reported on Friday, a potential embarrassment for Berlin which has lambasted Washington for its widespread surveillance. Clinton´s words were intercepted while she was on a U.S. government plane, Germany´s Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper and German regional public broadcasters NDR and WDR said, without giving details of where she was or when the recording was made. The respected broadsheet quoted German government sources saying the conversation had been picked up "by accident"

Every two minutes, a person in the United States is sexually assaulted. Almost half of rape victims are under 18 years old. And about two-thirds of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the victim. You would think in 2014 that you wouldn’t have to say this, but apparently I do: Rape is a serious issue. It affects men and women. It isn’t something to joke about, and it certainly isn’t something to play politics with. That’s why I was appalled when I recently saw an absurdly disingenuous political advertisement from the Vote No On 2 campaign insinuating that

In 2011, President Obama famously called for “shared sacrifice” in America. Three years later, his wish might just become the Environmental Protection Agency’s command. In the coming months, Obama’s EPA will decide whether to further tighten air quality requirements, known as the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). If EPA gets its way (to which it is accustomed), the vast majority of the country, including most of Florida, would fall into so-called non-attainment, (when EPA deems air levels “persistently exceed” limits) up from a few isolated regions just five years ago — all while air quality continues to steadily improve.

Jeff Bell was a reform conservative before it was cool. He’s spent his career arguing with a risk-averse Republican establishment. He pushed Ronald Reagan to embrace the supply-side doctrine of tax cuts before deficit reduction. He spent the 1990s warning the GOP that its tax policy favored investment capital over human capital, corporate interests over working families. He designed a family-friendly flat tax that reduced payroll taxes, increased the child tax credit, taxed capital gains and regular income at the same rate, and ended business expensing. Payroll tax relief and a generous child tax credit are elements of today’s reform

Police in Ferguson had earlier announced that Brown was suspected of taking cigars from the convenience store in what was described as a "strong-arm robbery." Brown´s family is accusing police of trying to draw attention away from the shooting.

A growing chorus of top Muslim leaders and Arab pundits around the world are strongly condemning the “cancerous” actions of extremist Islamic State militants, saying the ruthless group’s horrific campaign of murder in Iraq does serious harm to all Islam. In the past, Muslim leaders have faced criticism from inside and outside the religion for being slow to condemn terrorism in the name of Islam. An editorial in the London-based Al-Quds Al-Arabi last month called on moderate Muslims to denounce the actions of the group formerly known as ISIS, which has killed thousands and left an estimated 1.5 million people displaced in northern Iraq.

A federal agency is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars every year to support film festivals that showcase movies that some Americans might find offensive. Decapitated heads, public urination and sexual promiscuity are among the subjects explored on the big screen of events underwritten with U.S. taxpayers’ money. The National Endowment for the Arts directly funded at least 39 film festivals last fiscal year at a cost to taxpayers of $845,000. That doesn’t include the dozens of other festivals funded by federal dollars funneled through state and local arts agencies. Among the films featured at taxpayer-subsidized film festivals were “Wawd Ahp,”
