Berlin - German security agents recorded a conversation involving Hillary Clinton while she was U.S. Secretary of State, media reported on Friday, a potential embarrassment for Berlin which has lambasted Washington for its widespread surveillance. Clinton´s words were intercepted while she was on a U.S. government plane, Germany´s Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper and German regional public broadcasters NDR and WDR said, without giving details of where she was or when the recording was made. The respected broadsheet quoted German government sources saying the conversation had been picked up "by accident"

The group wants NBC to discipline the comedian. Joan Rivers is being taken to task for comments she has made about Gaza. The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee is asking NBC to discipline Rivers, highlighting a quote the comedian gave TMZ about Palestine´s conflict with Israel: "They started it. We now don´t count who´s dead. You´re dead, you deserve to be dead." Rivers later told the site the quote was taken out of context and that she was praying for peace between Israel and Palestine. Every two minutes, a person in the United States is sexually assaulted. Almost half of rape victims are under 18 years old. And about two-thirds of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the victim. You would think in 2014 that you wouldn’t have to say this, but apparently I do: Rape is a serious issue. It affects men and women. It isn’t something to joke about, and it certainly isn’t something to play politics with. That’s why I was appalled when I recently saw an absurdly disingenuous political advertisement from the Vote No On 2 campaign insinuating that

EPA’s ozone rule threatens

In 2011, President Obama famously called for “shared sacrifice” in America. Three years later, his wish might just become the Environmental Protection Agency’s command. In the coming months, Obama’s EPA will decide whether to further tighten air quality requirements, known as the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). If EPA gets its way (to which it is accustomed), the vast majority of the country, including most of Florida, would fall into so-called non-attainment, (when EPA deems air levels “persistently exceed” limits) up from a few isolated regions just five years ago — all while air quality continues to steadily improve.

Jeff Bell was a reform conservative before it was cool. He’s spent his career arguing with a risk-averse Republican establishment. He pushed Ronald Reagan to embrace the supply-side doctrine of tax cuts before deficit reduction. He spent the 1990s warning the GOP that its tax policy favored investment capital over human capital, corporate interests over working families. He designed a family-friendly flat tax that reduced payroll taxes, increased the child tax credit, taxed capital gains and regular income at the same rate, and ended business expensing. Payroll tax relief and a generous child tax credit are elements of today’s reform

Brown´s family is accusing police of trying to draw attention away from the shooting.

If you thought last winter was bad, get ready for a potentially worse winter in parts of the country this year. But another record-setting winter could mean more than higher heating bills and snow fights. Harsh winter weather combined with coal-fired power plant closings could spell trouble for many households across the country who will desperately need to keep the lights and heat on this winter. Joe Bastardi, chief meteorologist at WeatherBELL Analytics, told the Wall Street Journal Live that current weather patterns are “flowing along right now into the type of El Niño situation that is notorious for giving the United

A growing chorus of top Muslim leaders and Arab pundits around the world are strongly condemning the “cancerous” actions of extremist Islamic State militants, saying the ruthless group’s horrific campaign of murder in Iraq does serious harm to all Islam. In the past, Muslim leaders have faced criticism from inside and outside the religion for being slow to condemn terrorism in the name of Islam. An editorial in the London-based Al-Quds Al-Arabi last month called on moderate Muslims to denounce the actions of the group formerly known as ISIS, which has killed thousands and left an estimated 1.5 million people displaced in northern Iraq.

Brussels - EU ministers agreed at an emergency meeting on Friday to back the arming of overwhelmed Iraqi Kurdish fighters in the face of an onslaught by Islamic State militants. A million people in Iraq are fleeing their homes," German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said. "In northern Iraq, in the Kurdish part, Yazidis and Christians are being persecuted and slaughtered." The meeting was called at the urging of France and Italy,

A federal agency is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars every year to support film festivals that showcase movies that some Americans might find offensive. Decapitated heads, public urination and sexual promiscuity are among the subjects explored on the big screen of events underwritten with U.S. taxpayers’ money. The National Endowment for the Arts directly funded at least 39 film festivals last fiscal year at a cost to taxpayers of $845,000. That doesn’t include the dozens of other festivals funded by federal dollars funneled through state and local arts agencies. Among the films featured at taxpayer-subsidized film festivals were “Wawd Ahp,”

Commission President Nathan Hochman suggests the prizes could be $25,000 or $50,000, saying a pilot program should be used first to find out the number and size of prizes that would bump up turnout. WILMINGTON, Del. -- Former Vice President Al Gore is suing Al Jazeera, saying it´s withholding money promised from sale of Current TV. Al Jazeera purchased Current TV, its broadcast contracts and subcribers in January 2013 for over $500 million. The acquisition of Current TV, co-founded by Gore in 2005, allowed Al Jazeera to air Al Jazeera America in 43 million homes across the U.S. Since its launch, the cable news network has drawn praise for its ability to break stories objectively and its willingness to cover issues while willfully ignoring the spin of talking points and sound-bites. The Giver offers a pro-life message as well as a warning of what nanny state policies could lead. So why is Harvey Weinstein, one of Hollywood’s most prominent liberals, teaming up with Walden Media to bring Lois Lowry´s story to movie houses? The Giver producer Chip Flaherty says Lowry’s tale represents a cultural moment when both the left and the right can join together. The film’s dystopian future may pack conservative messages, but it also pays tribute to passion, creativity and the messy business of personal freedom. Flaherty recalls how Weinstein, out promoting the film earlier this week, told talk radio star Laura

State and local police departments obtain some of their military-style equipment through a free Defense Department program created in the early 1990s. While the portion of their gear coming from the program is relatively small (most of it is paid for through department budgets and federal grants), detailed data from the Pentagon illustrates how ubiquitous such equipment has become. Highlighted counties have received guns, grenade launchers, vehicles, night vision or body armor through the program since 2006.
