for tarnishing Muslims worldwide

A growing chorus of top Muslim leaders and Arab pundits around the world are strongly condemning the “cancerous” actions of extremist Islamic State militants, saying the ruthless group’s horrific campaign of murder in Iraq does serious harm to all Islam. In the past, Muslim leaders have faced criticism from inside and outside the religion for being slow to condemn terrorism in the name of Islam. An editorial in the London-based Al-Quds Al-Arabi last month called on moderate Muslims to denounce the actions of the group formerly known as ISIS, which has killed thousands and left an estimated 1.5 million people displaced in northern Iraq.

Brussels - EU ministers agreed at an emergency meeting on Friday to back the arming of overwhelmed Iraqi Kurdish fighters in the face of an onslaught by Islamic State militants. Ministers were gathered in Brussels in a rare summertime meeting facing calls to step up efforts to stop what Germany said was a slaughter of civilians. "Iraq is on the brink of a true catastrophe. A million people in Iraq are fleeing their homes," German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said. "In northern Iraq, in the Kurdish part, Yazidis and Christians are being persecuted and slaughtered." The meeting was called at the urging of France and Italy,

A federal agency is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars every year to support film festivals that showcase movies that some Americans might find offensive. Decapitated heads, public urination and sexual promiscuity are among the subjects explored on the big screen of events underwritten with U.S. taxpayers’ money. The National Endowment for the Arts directly funded at least 39 film festivals last fiscal year at a cost to taxpayers of $845,000. That doesn’t include the dozens of other festivals funded by federal dollars funneled through state and local arts agencies. Among the films featured at taxpayer-subsidized film festivals were “Wawd Ahp,”

With fewer than a fourth of voters showing up for recent local elections, the city´s Ethics Commission voted unanimously Thursday to recommend that the City Council consider a cash-prize drawing as an incentive to vote. Commission President Nathan Hochman suggests the prizes could be $25,000 or $50,000, saying a pilot program should be used first to find out the number and size of prizes that would bump up turnout. The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/1uV1Ekw) that federal law prohibits payment for voting, but Ethics Commissioner Jessica Levinson says that statute

WILMINGTON, Del. -- Former Vice President Al Gore is suing Al Jazeera, saying it´s withholding money promised from sale of Current TV. Al Jazeera purchased Current TV, its broadcast contracts and subcribers in January 2013 for over $500 million. The acquisition of Current TV, co-founded by Gore in 2005, allowed Al Jazeera to air Al Jazeera America in 43 million homes across the U.S. Since its launch, the cable news network has drawn praise for its ability to break stories objectively and its willingness to cover issues while willfully ignoring the spin of talking points and sound-bites. Not even the U.S. Secretary of State is immune to flight delays. John Kerry found that out on Thursday, forced to fly United Airlines from Honolulu to Washington after his Air Force Boeing 757 suffered mechanical problems, The Washington Post reports. Kerry had been in Hawaii as part of a week´s worth of travels. But when his usual 757 went out of service, Kerry had to do what travelers everywhere must do: scramble to find another option. For the Secretary, that meant a commercial United Airlines flight "hours later," according to the Post. But Kerry seemed to take it in stride, according to the Post's account.

The Giver offers a pro-life message as well as a warning of what nanny state policies could lead. So why is Harvey Weinstein, one of Hollywood’s most prominent liberals, teaming up with Walden Media to bring Lois Lowry´s story to movie houses? The Giver producer Chip Flaherty says Lowry’s tale represents a cultural moment when both the left and the right can join together. The film’s dystopian future may pack conservative messages, but it also pays tribute to passion, creativity and the messy business of personal freedom. Flaherty recalls how Weinstein, out promoting the film earlier this week, told talk radio star Laura

State and local police departments obtain some of their military-style equipment through a free Defense Department program created in the early 1990s. While the portion of their gear coming from the program is relatively small (most of it is paid for through department budgets and federal grants), detailed data from the Pentagon illustrates how ubiquitous such equipment has become. Highlighted counties have received guns, grenade launchers, vehicles, night vision or body armor through the program since 2006.
