St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch Thursday night blasted the decision by Gov. Jay Nixon to replace St. Louis County Police control of the Ferguson situation with the Missouri State Highway Patrol. “It´s shameful what he did today, he had no legal authority to do that," McCulloch said. "To denigrate the men and women of the county police department is shameful." McCulloch noted that no one was seriously injured in the effort led by County Police Chief Jon Belmar until Nixon handed control of the Ferguson over to the state agency on Thursday. “For Nixon to never talk to

Oops: Sen. Mary Landrieu (D., La.) has decided to reimburse her Senate office $5,700 for a chartered flight from New Orleans to Shreveport for an official event, then Shreveport to Dallas for a fundraiser. Federal law and Senate rules require expenses to be split between campaign and Senate accounts when campaign functions overlap with official business. CNN: Under federal law and Senate rules, the cost of a trip that includes official and campaign stops must often be prorated between Senate and campaign accounts. However, if the campaign activity is “incidental” to the official trip, the expense doesn’t need to be split up.

NBA player Gilbert Arenas really went off on Al Sharpton yesterday. Arenas was really incensed at Sharpton’s presence in Ferguson, Mo., and even went so far as to call the civil rights leader a “coon” and asking people to stop inviting him into their communities for help. Arenas posted a rather lengthy rant on Instagram that’s since been deleted, but UPROXX captured the full text before it was taken down, and man, it’s a doozy. Arenas sent his best wishes to Michael Brown‘s grieving family but immediately went on to blast African-Americans for resorting to looting and rioting. He said,

HIDALGO, Texas – The first wave of National Guard troops has taken up observation posts along the Texas-Mexico border. Several dozen soldiers deployed in the Rio Grande Valley are part of the up to 1,000 troops called up by Gov. Rick Perry last month, Texas National Guard Master Sgt. Ken Walker of the Joint Counterdrug Task Force said Thursday. Several guardsmen were seen Thursday afternoon manning an observation tower along the busy road leading to the Hidalgo International Bridge. This first batch of soldiers was specifically trained to man such observation towers in the area belonging to local law enforcement

Walmart and other chains

Attention, Walmart shoppers: The world’s largest retail chain misses you. Walmart on Thursday reported flat sales at its U.S. stores in the April to June period — the sixth straight quarter of declining or zero growth. The company, which targets lower-income shoppers by offering discounted prices, said its sluggish sales were the result of a sputtering economic recovery that has especially affected its core clientele. (Snip) A government report Wednesday found July retail sales, including autos, gas and restaurants, were the weakest since January. The slow-growth climate is being felt at major department store chains as well. Kohl’s, which also

How many stars would be brave enough to pose for a photograph like the one on the right? Hair greying and sparse, pulled harshly back from her skull. The barest traces of make-up, the skin crepey and creased. The lips thin and pursed. Not many of today’s celebrities in their 30s and 40s would dare to attempt it. (Photos) Even fewer would allow the camera lens to venture so intrusively close at the age of 88, knowing the result would be compared to how they looked in their dewy youth. “Great nations need organizing principles, and ‘Don’t do stupid stuff’ is not an organizing principle.” — Hillary Clinton, The Atlantic, Aug. 10 Leave it to Barack Obama’s own former secretary of state to acknowledge the fatal flaw of his foreign policy: a total absence of strategic thinking. Yes, of course everything Hillary Clinton says is positioning. The last time she sought the nomination (2008), as she admitted before Defense Secretary Bob Gates, she opposed the Iraq surge for political reasons because she was facing antiwar Sen. Barack Obama in Iowa. Now, as she prepares for her next run (2016), she’s

Israel Should Ignore Obama’s Tantrum

Last month as the fighting raged in Gaza, news about the United States resupplying the ammunition stocks of the Israel Defense Forces balanced other, more troubling stories about arguments between the two countries over diplomacy. But it turns out the arguments between the Obama administration and the Israelis were even angrier than we thought. As the Wall Street Journal reports today, the White House has been having a full-fledged temper tantrum over Israel’s unwillingness to take orders from Washington and doesn’t care who knows it. But the best advice friends of Israel can give Prime Minister Netanyahu is to stick

What on earth? In the middle of a war this country’s president publicly says is justified owing to the relentlessness of the rocket fire against civilian populations, U.S. officials proudly tell the Wall Street Journal, they are holding up weapons transfers to Israel: They decided to require White House and State Department approval for even routine munitions requests by Israel, officials say. Instead of being handled as a military-to-military matter, each case is now subject to review—slowing the approval process and signaling to Israel that military assistance once taken for granted is now under closer scrutiny. These transfers were taking

It’s been two months since ISIS took over Iraq’s second largest city. But U.S. analysts are still trying to figure out how big the group is and the real identities of its leaders. The U.S. intelligence community is still trying to answer basic questions about the jihadists who tried to wipe out Iraq’s remaining Yazidis and who now threaten to overrun the capital of the country’s Kurdish provinces. In a briefing for reporters Thursday, U.S. intelligence officials said the government is in the process of re-evaluating an estimate from early this year that said the Islamic State of Iraq and

Diplomacy: Great leadership isn´t necessarily about intelligence, expertise or background. It´s more about wisdom and judgment. Based on this, Americans should be very concerned about Secretary of State John Kerry. As the world melts into chaos and threats to the U.S. homeland multiply, America´s top foreign policy official seems bizarrely, even dangerously, fixated on ... global warming. In remarks at the East-West Center in Honolulu on Wednesday, Kerry repeated his claim that climate change is "the biggest challenge ... we face right now." To which we respond: Can he be serious? In recent days, we´ve seen the establishment of a terrorist mini-state across northern

The sources noted that Israel had requested the transfer of ammunitions directly from the Pentagon, without receiving the approval of the White House or State Department officials. "We were blindsided," one US diplomat said, while a US defense official insisted that "there was no intent to blindside anyone. The process for this transfer was followed precisely along the lines that it should have." According to the sources, White House officials were concerned about Israel´s use of artillery,

ANCHORAGE — A polar bear surprised a mother and daughter in a tent on Alaska´s Barter Island, and biologists say such encounters likely will increase with the ongoing loss of sea ice from climate warming. Rexford was pulling on her socks last week when she looked over her shoulder and saw the outline of a paw pressed against the canvas tent. He said the Department of Justice´s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) office would provide assistance for local authorities to help maintain crowd control “without relying on unnecessary extreme displays of force.” “The law enforcement response to these
