Tennessee court breaks winning

One after another, lawsuits were setting them up and courts were knocking them down. Following last year’s Supreme Court ruling that rejected the Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional, state and federal courts nationwide have ruled against gay marriage bans from coast to coast. It was a remarkable, uninterrupted streak of success for civil-rights proponents, spanning more than two dozen courts. Yesterday, however, we learned that the streak was broken. For the first time in nearly fourteen months, a state’s ban on same-sex marriage has withstood a constitutional challenge in court. A state judge in Tennessee ruled last week that “neither

A wildfire burning through dense forest in California´s Mendocino County has destroyed more than 11,000 acres and injured eight firefighters. The cost has reportedly topped $20 million. That does not include the marijuana. This part of California is known for growing marijuana, most of it illegal, and a lot of it is hidden among the trees. "I know there have been several marijuana gardens that have burned up," said Sheriff Tom Allman. As residents were being evacuated last week and homes were threatened, Allman attended a community meeting with locals. "Let's talk about the 'M' word," Allman said he told them, "We are not willing to

The SAS is on the ground in Iraq as part of the operation to rescue 30,000 “desperate” Yazidi refugees, it emerged on Wednesday, as US forces landed on Mount Sinjar. American officials confirmed that a combined contingent of US Marines, special forces and USAID disaster assistance experts had "briefly" landed on Mt Sinjar just hours after David Cameron pledged that Britain would help with the mission. The Prime Minister pledged to “get these people off that mountain” as he suggested that British helicopters could be used within days to save the Yazidi refugees “exposed, starving and dying of thirst” in

In the battle to become the dominant ride-sharing company, Uber and Lyft have been launching a series of accusations at one another, each side accusing the other of sabotage. Since last October, 177 Uber employees have reportedly canceled more than 5,000 rides from Lyft drivers, presumably in a ploy to disturb Lyft´s business, according to data obtained from Lyft by CNNMoney. The data shared with CNN by Lyft notes that certain Uber employees have created multiple Lyft accounts, from which they have canceled Lyft rides. For example, one Lyft passenger, identified by Lyft drivers as an Uber recruiter, had as many as 21 different

This week was supposed to be Michael Brown´s first at technical college. Instead, his parents were planning his funeral. The 18-year-old was shot by a police officer in Ferguson, a St. Louis suburb, on Saturday, sparking a federal civil rights inquiry, local protests and national debate. Civil rights leader Rev. Jess Jackson wrote an op-ed for USA Today entitled "There´s a Ferguson near you." "Right across the country you have these dried strips of urban alienation where you have high levels of infant mortality and of unemployment, and lack of trade skills training, first-class jails, second-class schools. The American Humanist Association (AHA) is about to learn a very important lesson -- folks around Gainesville, Georgia don’t take kindly to out-of-town atheists trying to bully their children. More than 200 people turned out in defiance of the self-described atheist group early Thursday morning for an impromptu prayer rally in the middle of the Chestatee High School football field. The previous day, the atheists (acting on behalf of a single, unnamed citizen) sent a letter to school officials demanding that the football coaching staff stop participating in team prayers and that they remove all biblical references and religious messages from team

The White House is facing new questions about underestimating the threat from Islamic State militants in Iraq with the surfacing of a speech in 2011 by John Brennan, then President Obama’s counter-terrorism chief and now CIA director, in which he dismissed the danger of an Islamic caliphate as “absurd.” “Our strategy is … shaped by a deeper understanding of al Qaeda’s goals, strategy, and tactics,” Mr. Brennan said on June 29, 2011. “I’m not talking about al Qaeda’s grandiose vision of global domination through a violent Islamic caliphate. That vision is absurd, and we are not going to organize our counterterrorism policies against a

Six former platoon mates of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl have hit roadblocks in shopping proposals for their book, because some publishers are reportedly afraid it will discredit President Obama. After five years in the Taliban’s capture, Sgt. Bergdahl was released in May as part of a U.S. prison exchange for five Guantanamo detainees. Some of the soldier’s platoon mates have come forward alleging that Sgt. Bergdahl intentionally deserted his post in Afghanistan on June 30, 2009, putting other soldiers in danger. A draft of their book proposal depicts Sgt. Bergdahl as a “premeditated” deserter who possibly aided the Taliban, but agents for the
