The Obama administration is considering sending more advisers to the city of Erbil in the Kurdish region of Iraq to help manage the ongoing crisis, CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin reports. President Obama ordered up to 300 military advisers to Iraq in mid-June to assist Iraqi security forces and assess intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets in the region, 250 of whom are now on the ground. But there are no advisers in Erbil, close to where much of the fighting is taking place between the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and ISIS. The advisers would, among other things, help manage

Geneva - The World Health Organization authorised Tuesday the use of experimental drugs to fight Ebola as the death toll topped 1,000 and a Spanish priest became the first European to succumb to the latest outbreak. The declaration by the UN´s health agency came after a US company that makes an experimental serum called ZMapp said it had sent all its available supplies to hard-hit west Africa. "In the special circumstances of this Ebola outbreak it is ethical to offer unregistered interventions as potential treatments or prevention," WHO assistant director general Marie-Paule Kieny told reporters in Geneva, following a meeting

Gene Simmons says that immigrants should learn to speak English if they “want to unlock the keys to the kingdom”. The Kiss frontman was born in Israel and moved to New York with his mother when he was eight-years-old. (Snip) “In America, I could think what I wanted to think, do as I pleased and reach for the stars. In America, I’ve learned, you have an inferred judiciary duty to learn how to speak English. “Get rid of your accent,” he continued. “I did. Be a legal immigrant. I’m a legal immigrant. Come to the country, just buckle your knees a little bit, make an effort to learn about the culture, assimilate to the point that you can.”

The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday finalized a $26-million legal settlement to end a lawsuit over a ban on lunchtime naps by trash-truck drivers. The expenditure, approved on a 9-2 vote, resolves a class-action lawsuit involving nearly 1,100 sanitation workers who said they were improperly barred from sleeping and engaging in other activities during their meal breaks. The Times reported in February that the council had endorsed the settlement. Councilman Paul Krekorian, who supported the payment, said the settlement was not publicly announced earlier this year because it was not final and needed the approval of a judge.

President Barack Obama entered office in 2009 with an undeniable mandate to bring about a swift but favorable conclusion to the Iraq War. But by the time the president entered office, combat operations in Iraq were already winding down. By the middle of 2008, the “surge” strategy and a political offensive resulting in the “Anbar Awakening” had greatly reduced internecine violence. Iraq was on a path toward reconciliation and, it was hoped, stability and peace. “The surge had undoubtedly met its stated aim of buying the time and space necessary for the Iraqi government to advance national reconciliation and, at

Baghdad - After two days of defiant speeches and special security units deployed in the Iraqi capital, raising the specter of a coup, Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki appeared to back away on Tuesday from his implied threat to use force to stay in power, issuing a statement saying that the army should stay out of politics. Mr. Maliki had reacted angrily on Monday to the Iraqi president’s decision to nominate a different Shiite political figure to be prime minister in his place. He had decried the step as unconstitutional, threatened court action and complained that the United States was scheming to oust him. But he appeared to soften his

RAF Tornado aircraft have left the UK for Cyprus from where they will support efforts to deliver aid to refugees trapped on mountains in northern Iraq. The jets will carry out surveillance ahead of further airdrops as the UN warned tens of thousands were trapped. A "small number" of Chinook helicopters would also be sent for "further relief options", the Foreign Office said. It comes as Islamic State (IS) fighters seized areas of Iraq, with reports of the slaughter of religious minorities. Among those reportedly being targeted by the jihadists are Iraqi Christians and members of the Yazidi religious sect.

President Obama has been pushing for regime change for Iraq since late June, The Daily Beast has learned. No, Obama has not proposed toppling Iraq’s government by force like his predecessor once did. But the president has instructed his diplomats in Washington and Baghdad to find an alternative to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. President Bush, in the buildup to the 2003 Iraq invasion, said that our goal was an Iraq that was democratic, able to defend itself. and would be our ally in the global war against terrorism. None of those goals was achieved. Now, three years after President Obama withdrew American forces from Iraq, he’s dipping a military toe into Iraq again. The mission he’s described for our forces boils down to ensuring that the Democrats don’t get blamed for “losing” Iraq in the 2016 elections. If that seems harsh consider the facts, as Obama has described them, to justify the latest

The Obama administration broke the law when it released thousands of illegal immigrants, more than 600 of whom had criminal records, last February as a result of poor planning and micromanagement from Washington, according to an internal audit released Tuesday that says things have not improved in the 18 months since. Compounding matters, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) gave bad information to Congress, initially blaming the looming budget sequester, rather than the agency’s own budget pressures, the Homeland Security inspector general concluded.

Obama is reportedly considering giving temporary amnesty and work permits to millions of illegal immigrants via executive fiat during the August recess. Washington - Monday night, when word broke that actor-comedian Robin Williams had passed away, social media lit up. Pretty much any other news – Iraq, Gaza, Ukraine, Ferguson, Mo. – was eclipsed by the terribly sad news of his apparent suicide. Soon, the White House put out a presidential statement on Mr. Williams – crystallizing one of those Zeitgeist moments when folks can put aside partisan differences and unite in appreciation of a cultural icon. (Snip) Did President Obama really write that? Of course not. His chief speechwriter, Cody Keenan, composed those words, but “they were approved by the president himself,”

After Bill Clinton was elected president in 1992 one of his key aides, Rahm Emanuel, sat in the campaign’s favourite restaurant in Little Rock, Arkansas, venting his frustration at those who had tried to stand in their way. Heaven only knows what damage he does to the furniture when he mentions Karen Lewis’s name. Emanuel, who was Barack Obama’s chief of staff, is now
