Whatever Happened to Cynthia McKinney?

Cynthia McKinney was one of the looniest Democrats of her generation. A 9/11 Truther, she lost not one but two Democratic primaries because she was considered too far out. Her father’s explanation that she was in trouble because “the Jews have bought everybody. J-E-W-S” added to her legend. After her second primary rebuff, McKinney left the Democratic Party. She was the Green Party candidate for president in 2008–which tells you all you need to know about the Greens–and got 0.12% of the vote, mostly, one assumes, from nearsighted voters who checked the wrong box. McKinney is now set to re-emerge

Experts Warn of Terror
Blowback from Iraq Airstrikes

The American airstrikes against a militant group in Iraq could motivate the fighters to retaliate with terror attacks against U.S. civilians, experts warn. (Snip) ISIS has long threatened America openly. In June the group’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, warned Americans that “soon enough, you will be in direct confrontation [with us].” Last week a spokesman for the group vowed that “we will raise the flag of Allah in the White House.” Despite that bombastic rhetoric, ISIS has thus far been consumed with its fights in Iraq and Syria, and with capturing territory to form an Islamic caliphate. But counterterrorism officials

Headlines have focused on the atrocities committed by ISIS on the northern Iraqi front. (Snip) The story adds, almost superfluously, that ISIS is attempting to shoot down aid deliveries. They would do that, wouldn’t they? Yet all this time the world was assured there was nothing to worry about in the hundreds of radical mosques, the thousands of militants eagerly received into the West and creeping sharia law in its institutions. The dangers, they were told, all lay in the Tea Party and elusive militia groups holed up in a cabin in the Ozarks. But if the calamities in Iraq

UNCONFIRMED reports suggest troops loyal to controversial Iraqi PM Nuri al-Maliki have sealed off Baghdad’s “Green Zone” in an apparent coup. “There is a huge security presence, police and army, especially around the Green Zone,” the highly-protected district that houses Iraq’s key institutions, a high-ranking police officer has confirmed to AFP. He said the deployment started at around 10:30 pm Iraq time, just 90 minutes before Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki announced on state television he would file a complaint against the president for violating the constitution. “There is security everywhere in Baghdad, these are very unusual measures that look like

Bill and Hillary Clinton are making the most of their downtime in the Hamptons. The former U.S. President and his ex-Secretary of State wife were pictured this morning enjoying a stroll on the beach in Amagansett, where they are paying $100,000 to rent an $18million five-bedroom property for three weeks. The couple, who were accompanied by their dogs as well as a Secret Service agent, were dressed in very casual clothes, with President Clinton decked out in black SoulCycle shorts and green sneakers and his wife in a bright blue muumuu and slippers. When police found Ali Muhammad Brown, he was taking a mid-afternoon nap under a tarp strung between two trees, just a few hundred feet from a private road that runs along the first ridge of the Watchung Mountains in West Orange. A gun was tucked in his belt, his notebook diary nearby. He was living off bananas and other fruit. It was July 18 when Brown woke to several West Orange police officers with their guns trained on him. He surrendered without a fight. Eight days earlier, about 6 a.m., Brown had left his makeshift campsite and walked through the

The terrorist group told the people to convert to Islam or die, killed 500 of them, buried some alive, and took hundreds of girls as slaves. "We have striking evidence obtained from Yazidis fleeing Sinjar and some who escaped death, and also crime scene images that show indisputably that the gangs of the Islamic State have executed at least 500 Yazidis after seizing Sinjar," said human rights minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. While the entire panel that appeared on Sunday, August 10 agreed that Obama has mismanaged the threat ISIS poses to the Middle East, Ron Fournier of National Journal had the strongest rebuke of Obama when he charged that “he´s been the Commander in Chief or the underestimator in chief.” The segment began with Jackie Kucinich of the Washington Post expressing her dismay at the lack

Patient Zero in the Ebola outbreak, researchers suspect, was a 2-year-old boy who died on Dec. 6, just a few days after falling ill in a village in Guéckédou, in southeastern Guinea. Bordering Sierra Leone and Liberia, Guéckédou is at the intersection of three nations, where the disease found an easy entry point to the region. A week later, it killed the boy’s mother, then his 3-year-old sister, then his grandmother. All had fever, vomiting and diarrhea, but no one knew what had sickened them. Two mourners at the grandmother’s funeral took the virus home to their village. A health

WASHINGTON — President Obama’s military plan to halt ISIS advances with limited air strikes and relief drops to besieged minorities trapped in mountain camps came under fire from left and right Sunday – and even Hillary Clinton took a shot at his foreign policy. “Great nations need organizing principles, and ‘Don’t do stupid stuff’ is not an organizing principle,” said Clinton, who served as Obama’s first secretary of state. She made the comment to The Atlantic in response to a question about one of the administration’s blunt mantras to observe caution – an approach critics say has led to disengagement

Hamas played a double game Sunday, with its negotiators reportedly agreeing to a ceasefire in Cairo, and its terrorists in Gaza launching missiles at Israel. The video above is Barack Obama in December of 2011 declaring the mission in Iraq accomplished -- in his words, a "success." According to the president, we were leaving behind an Iraq that was "stable and self-reliant." Except we weren´t, and Obama knew it and so did anyone else paying attention. Oh, the war in Iraq was won, but it wouldn’t stay won without an American presence. Regardless, the President bugged out of Iraq without an all-important status of forces agreement. In other words, like the stabilizing troops we still have in Japan, Germany, and South Korea -- we left

“I don’t think we’re going to solve this problem in weeks,” President Barack Obama told reporters following the start of renewed airstrikes on Iraqi insurgents. “I think this is going to take some time.” The president spent the majority of his address to the press noting that dramatic political reforms and a new government in Baghdad is the only permanent solution to the present crisis. In the absence of that political solution, however, American airpower must ensure that pro-Western elements in the Kurdish and Shiite areas of Iraq do not fall to the Sunni fundamentalist militia.“In the absence of an Iraqi

In an interview with The Atlantic´s Jeffrey Goldberg, Hillary Cliinton made some uncharacteristically harsh comments about President Obama´s foreign policy. President Obama has long-ridiculed the idea that the U.S., early in the Syrian civil war, could have shaped the forces fighting the Assad regime, thereby stopping al Qaeda-inspired groups—like the one rampaging across Syria and Iraq today—from seizing control of the rebellion. In an interview in February, the president told me that “when you have a professional army ... fighting against a farmer, a carpenter, an engineer who started out as protesters and suddenly now see themselves in the midst
