Christians, Jews are easy

The absurd attacks on Israel for exercising its right of self-defense in the past few weeks have only been surpassed in foolhardy dangerousness by the world’s virtual silence about the genocide being practiced against Christians and other minority religions in the Islamic State formerly known as northwestern Iraq. No matter how you try to wrap your head around the hypocrisy of people calling out Israel for supposed war crimes while at the same time closing their eyes to the uncomfortable truth of the barbaric genocide being waged by Islamic fundamentalists, you cannot do so. Hypocrisy of this dimension is almost demonic.

French forces have bombed Islamist militant positions in northern Mali. Four or five bombs were dropped in the Esssakane region, west of the city of Timbuktu on Sunday morning, the BBC´s Alex Duval Smith in Mali reports. The UN has said al-Qaeda militants were active in the area. Last month Timbuktu airport came under rocket attack. France intervened in Mali in January last year to try to drive out al-Qaeda-linked groups, which had taken over the north of the country. Last month the French government said it was setting up a new military operation to stop the emergence of jihadist groups in the Sahel region of Africa.

´Guardian´ slams rise in anti-Semitism

The Guardian, one of Britain´s most influential daily newspapers, used its editorial on Friday to warn of the dangers of European anti-Semitism that has been fueled in recent weeks by the tumult in Israel and Gaza. Citing the numerous violent attacks against Jews, synagogues, and other institutions on the Continent in recent years, the newspaper condemned "the conflation of Jews and Israel" while denouncing those who would exploit their anger over Israeli policies toward the Palestinians by attacking Jews in the diaspora. "The controversy has gained extra heat because of the alarming increase in anti-Jewish racism," the Guardian wrote."

Muslims of varied backgrounds, from Palestinians to Pakistanis, gathered Saturday at Overpeck County Park for a celebration that focused on community, family and fun. From sports to shopping, henna tattoos to pony rides, families flowed into Ridgefield Park during the day-long event. The “Eid Extravaganza” was a collaboration between Islamic groups from Bergen, Passaic and Hudson counties: the Young Muslims chapter in Teaneck, the Darul Islah mosque where they are based, the Islamic Center of Passaic County in Paterson and the North Hudson Islamic Education Center. Noureen Qureshi of the Young Muslims said her group has had events in the past

Beirut — A cleric read the verdict before the truck came and dumped a large pile of stones near the municipal garden. Jihadi fighters then brought in the woman, clad head to toe in black, and put her in a small hole in the ground. When residents gathered, the fighters told them to carry out the sentence: Stoning to death for the alleged adulteress. None in the crowd stepped forward, said a witness to the event in a northern Syrian city. So the jihadi fighters, mostly foreign extremists, did it themselves, pelting Faddah Ahmad with stones until her body was dragged

Washington - The United States conducted new air strikes on Islamic State targets near Arbil, the capital of Iraq´s semi-autonomous Kurdish region, U.S. Central Command said on Sunday. The strikes, launched by drone aircraft and U.S. fighter jets, were aimed at protecting Kurdish Peshmerga forces as they face off against Islamist militants near Arbil, the site of a U.S. consulate and a U.S.-Iraqi joint military operations center, Central Command said in a statement.

Coming Out as Pro-Israel on Facebook

I recently spelled out my support for Israel on Facebook. This is new for me. I´m an American baby boomer, and I always took it for granted that my country supported Israel, and that forces infinitely more powerful than I had the job covered. There´s another reason I previously hadn´t said much about Israel: I´m Polish-Slovak-American, and I am Catholic. Polish Catholics are stereotyped as the world´s worst anti-Semites. Poles suck anti-Semitism with their mother´s milk, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir famously declared.

Frank Maloney, the former boxing promoter who guided Lennox Lewis to the world heavyweight title, is now living as a woman and plans to undergo a sex change. The 61-year-old told a tabloid newspaper she now lives as a woman called Kellie. Maloney, a twice married father-of-three, has been living as a female for more than a year and has begun hormone therapy, the Sunday Mirror reported. “I wasn´t born into the right body, I have always known I was a woman. I can´t keep living in the shadows," she said. The newspaper told in a six-page story how Maloney's unhappiness over her secret wish to be a woman had

An Inside Look at How Democrats

Elections matter. President Obama proves it every day as he willfully seeks to wreck our nation. But this is very evident elsewhere, too. The 2010 elections reversed decades of Democrat majority control in state houses. Since then, GOP governors and legislatures all over the country have been restoring sanity to state government. Most Americans don’t know this of course, because the media won’t tell you. One good example is North Carolina. Republicans took over the North Carolina legislature in 2010, and Charlotte’s popular Republican mayor, Pat McCrory, won the governor’s mansion in 2012. This gave the GOP full

Ask voters in North Carolina’s Research Triangle what November’s midterm elections are about and one will tell you drones. A second will say closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Yet another, the middle-class squeeze. (Snip) This is an election about nothing — and everything. Unlike in previous midterm election years, no dominant national theme has emerged for the 2014 campaign, according to public opinion surveys as well as interviews last week with scores of voters in five key states and with dozens of politicians and party strategists. Even without a single salient issue, a heavy cloud of economic anxiety and general

The dismissals, reported exclusively by Euromaidan Press, are said to have been carried out in secret. While no official announcement appears to have been made by Mr Putin, reporters have posted links to the Kremlin’s official website – which can be translated into English – that show a list of staff

Irbil, Iraq: At least 20,000 civilians who had been besieged by jihadists on a mountain in northern Iraq have safely escaped to Syria and been escorted by Kurdish forces back into Iraq, officials said Sunday. The breakthrough coincided with US air raids on Islamic State fighters in the Sinjar area of northwestern Iraq Saturday. Shawkat Barbahari, an official from the autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq put the number of people who escaped the siege and crossed back into Iraqi Kurdistan at 30,000. "The Kurdish peshmerga forces have succeeded in making 30,000 Yazidis who fled Mount Sinjar, most of them

Or that they do not know how to party. The Joneses are the life of every party, and they want everyone invited to their party. The more the merrier, who cares how it looks? If after more than 20 years in the National Football League every other team and league executive does not know this, they are either blind, deaf or just stupid. Jerry wants to win football

A 40-year political career came to a close after Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie lost his bid for a second term in a stunning primary-election defeat by a fellow Democrat and state senator who defied party leadership to challenge the incumbent. A second intraparty fight for U.S. Senate was too close to call. State Sen. David Ige, once seen as an underdog, cruised to a decisive 35 percentage point win in Saturday´s primary after being dramatically outspent by Abercrombie, who also had high-profile endorsements including President Barack Obama. Ige said his win "proves that people power can be money power, especially in Hawaii."

A beautiful mosaic of ancient religions, cultures and languages in the Middle East is being systematically destroyed. Until now, the world has watched mutely. When Muslims were threatened with genocide in Bosnia, the international community acted in concert to prevent the campaign against them developing into a full-scale pogrom. I went there myself, as part of an effort to bring relief supplies to all those who were affected. I was also present when millions of Afghan refugees poured into Pakistan after the Soviet invasion of that country. Once again, Western countries, Christian, Islamic and secular organisations were at the

Former US secretary of state and likely 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton voiced support for Israel´s operation in Gaza, saying in an interview with The Atlantic published on Sunday, "I think Israel did what it had to do to respond to the rockets.” Clinton told The Atlantic´s Jeffrey Goldberg that "Israel has a right to defend itself. The steps Hamas has taken to embed rockets and command-and-control facilities and tunnel entrances in civilian areas, this makes a response by Israel difficult.” Clinton said that, like the United States, Israel has tried to be as careful as possible to avoid killing civilians in Gaza.

So said the brilliant Iowahawk this week as most people of the world watch in horror the spectacle of 40,000 members of this beleaguered Iraqi minority huddled without food or water on rocky Sinjar mountaintops. Below them the savages of ISIS kidnap Yazidi women, raping them and selling them into slavery. Heads of children ISIS decapitated are displayed on pikes in public parks and there are reports of distraught families tossing their beloved babies from mountaintops rather than watch them slowly starve to death. It now seems the entire British media are referring to the terrible casualties in Gaza as "Palestinian civilians". This seems to be following the BBC´s highly slanted lead. Since when has Gaza had an army, navy and air force? They are all civilians. I was surprised by the statement made by former Florida governor Jeb Bush at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Road to Majority conference in 2013. “Immigrants create far more businesses than native-born Americans. Immigrants are more fertile, and they love families, and they have more intact families, and they bring a younger population. Immigrants create an engine of economic prosperity.” (Aaron Blake, Jeb Bush: U.S. Economy needs immigrants because they’re ‘more fertile,’ Washington Post, June 14, 2013)

A terrifying jihadist group is conquering and butchering its way across big swaths of Iraq and Syria. Planes are falling out of the sky on what seems like a weekly basis. That’s how it feels, at least, to those of us who sit at a blessed remove from the death and destruction, but who are watching every bloody moment of it via cable news and social media. It raises an important question: In an
