The Center for Responsive Politics has issued a report detailing the top donors to political campaigns in 2014. Of the top 20, only two were supporting GOP candidates. Eleven were labor unions. Examiner: The highly respected Center for Responsive Politics put the pro-Democratic fundraising group ActBlue at the top of the organization donor list, coughing up over $30 million, with 99 percent going to Democrats.

So said the brilliant Iowahawk this week as most people of the world watch in horror the spectacle of 40,000 members of this beleaguered Iraqi minority huddled without food or water on rocky Sinjar mountaintops. Below them the savages of ISIS kidnap Yazidi women, raping them and selling them into slavery. Heads of children ISIS decapitated are displayed on pikes in public parks and there are reports of distraught families tossing their beloved babies from mountaintops rather than watch them slowly starve to death. This barbarism comes after tens of thousands of Christians were raped, murdered, driven from their ancestral homes

It now seems the entire British media are referring to the terrible casualties in Gaza as "Palestinian civilians". This seems to be following the BBC´s highly slanted lead. Since when has Gaza had an army, navy and air force? They are all civilians. [Snip] That puts it alongside the Provisional IRA, Al Qaeda, AQAP, AQIM, Taliban, Isis, Al Nusrah and Nigeria´s Boko Haram. In other words, all terrorists are civilians. They have enlisted in no known armed forces, wear no uniforms and carry no badges of rank. They are deliberately indistinguishable from the 90 per cent who just want to

I was surprised by the statement made by former Florida governor Jeb Bush at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Road to Majority conference in 2013. “Immigrants create far more businesses than native-born Americans. Immigrants are more fertile, and they love families, and they have more intact families, and they bring a younger population. Immigrants create an engine of economic prosperity.” (Aaron Blake, Jeb Bush: U.S. Economy needs immigrants because they’re ‘more fertile,’ Washington Post, June 14, 2013)

A terrifying jihadist group is conquering and butchering its way across big swaths of Iraq and Syria. Planes are falling out of the sky on what seems like a weekly basis. Civilians are being killed in massive numbers in the Israel-Gaza conflict. Others are falling prey to Ebola in West Africa. The world, in short, is falling apart. That’s how it feels, at least, to those of us who sit at a blessed remove from the death and destruction, but who are watching every bloody moment of it via cable news and social media. It raises an important question: In an

Oracle sues Oregon over

The legal battle over Oregon´s dysfunctional health insurance exchange officially began this week when Oracle Corp. sued the state agency operating the exchange, alleging breach of contract and accusing Gov. John Kitzhaber of attempting to systematically "vilify the company in the media." In a 21-page complaint filed Friday in federal court for the District of Oregon, Portland Division, Oracle charges that during the early months of this year, state officials privately continued to request Oracle´s help to fix their system while engaging in a campaign of "constant public slander" against the tech company.

In Iraq, Obama launches

President Obama says he doesn’t take lightly the decision to launch air attacks on Iraq — but you couldn’t tell that from the way he launched the attack. Obama may or may not be making the correct decision in attacking the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria — the well-armed Islamist terrorist group now attempting a horrifying takeover of Iraq — and so it would have been proper for Obama to raise the question for debate in the past few months while ISIS spread across Iraq. Also, the legality of attacking without congressional authorization is murky. Finally, it’s hard to discern the

Data Shows Cash For Clunkers

“Cash for Clunkers,” the 2009 Obama administration stimulus program designed to spend $2.85 billion to jumpstart the auto industry, turned out to be a complete disaster — for the auto industry. In the minds of Obama’s team of advisers and economists, the program made total sense, of course. The plan was to dangle a $4,500 credit to persuade car owners to trade in their older automobiles for new cars with better fuel efficiency. It would stimulate an economy then in the midst of a deep recession. As a bonus, it would mean less oil consumption and cleaner-running cars. The law of unintended

Obama’s new Iraq war began modestly. By the end of his press conference on Saturday though it got a bit bigger. President Barack Obama’s war in Iraq just got more ambitious. Speaking to reporters before departing for a two week vacation with his family on Martha’s Vineyard, President Obama said the U.S. had to make sure the Islamic State “is not engaging in actions that could cripple a country.” Noting the foreign jihadists fighting with the Islamic State, Obama said, “There is going to be a counterterrorism element that we are already preparing for.” And while Obama stressed that the U.S. military cannot

I guess it´s easy to be moral when morality is defined as whatever you need at that moment. Still, it’s annoying to listen to people with such a weird, unearned sense of their own moral superiority. In truth, they are utterly morally illiterate. These are folks who draw parallels between Hamas and Israel when the only parallel between the Israelis and the jihadist degenerates is that they share the habit of breathing oxygen. You’d be better off discussing ethics with your terrier. At least your dog isn’t going to come up with excuses for Ted Kennedy. They´re delusional in that they really

ENCINO, Tex. — Elias Pompa had a thousand square miles of backcountry to patrol by himself, but now all he could see was the red Texas clay coating his windshield. “Damn dirt,” the sheriff’s deputy said, turning on his wipers, trying to follow the road as dusk closed in on him 11 hours into his shift. The gravel lane turned into two trail ruts, and the trail disappeared in sand and mesquite. He checked his location on a map, but the nearest marked road was three miles away. As Israeli operations against Hamas wind down, here are seven insights into the month-long conflict: Missile shield: The superb performance of Iron Dome, the protective system that shot down nearly every Hamas rocket threatening life or property, has major military implications for Israel and the world. Its success signals that “Star Wars” (as opponents maliciously dubbed it upon introduction in 1983) can indeed provide protection from short-range and also presumably from long-range rockets and missiles, potentially changing the future of warfare. Tunnels: Tunneling behind enemy lines is hardly a new tactic; historically, it has had success, such as at the 1917 Battle

A bug can turn you into a vegetarian, or at least make you swear off red meat. Doctors across the nation are seeing a surge of sudden meat allergies in people bitten by a certain kind of tick. This bizarre problem was only discovered a few years ago but is growing as the ticks spread from the Southwest and the East to more parts of the United States. In some cases, eating a burger or a steak has landed people in the hospital with severe allergic reactions. Few patients seem aware of the risk, and even doctors are slow to recognize it.

The San Antonio Spurs, champions of the National Basketball Association, last week hired a female assistant coach, something new in professional sports. Skeptics call it a publicity stunt, but Becky Hammon knows her game. She is in her 16th season in the Women’s National Basketball Association, and is a six-time All-Star. She wasn’t drafted to play for the Spurs — nor has any other woman been. Women are thought to be not big enough and not strong enough to play with men. In a game where the scoreboard can’t be argued with, that’s not discrimination, but a simple recognition of the

In the spring of 1954, as the Korean War was winding down, Navy Corpsman Robert “Doc” Rogers decided to buy a Marine a drink. “I heard stories about the guys. Marines would come in drunk off of liberty and they’d go down and say, ‘Let’s go down and let Reckless out.’ And they’d do it — just to see what trouble she’d get into.” That Reckless was a horse didn’t really matter. She loved beer — and camaraderie. “Sometimes the guys would be standing around talking and she’d walk right up to us and just stand there,” Doc Rogers said.

Most polls show Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis (D) lagging behind state Attorney General Greg Abbott (R) in her bid to become the state´s first Democratic governor in two decades. And in politics, when the battle looks like a tough one to win, sometimes the solution is a high-risk, high-reward gamble. But the Davis campaign´s decision to run an ad accusing the Republican Abbott of "siding with a corporation over a rape victim" is a very risky gamble, indeed. The ad began airing on Thursday night, describing a 1993 incident in which a woman said she was raped by a Kirby

THREE times before last week’s decision to launch airstrikes against the self-styled caliphate, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, President Obama was urged to intervene in Middle Eastern conflicts: in Libya in the spring of 2011, in Syria from 2011 onward and in Iraq two short months ago, when Baghdad was threatened by the swift advance of ISIS. In each case, there were good reasons to hesitate. In Libya, we had little to gain strategically from Muammar el-Qaddafi’s fall, and more to fear from the vacuum that might follow. Syria was a more significant theater, and Bashar al-Assad’s downfall a

President Obama is furious about congressional gridlock. In a press conference last week, he chastised the Republican-led House of Representatives for refusing to support the bipartisan immigration bill that was passed out of the Senate last June. “The argument isn’t between me and the House Republicans,” the president said. “It’s between the House Republicans and the Senate Republicans, and House Republicans and the business community, and House Republicans and the evangelical community.” The president then insisted that intransigence on the part of House Republicans was forcing his hand: “In circumstances where even basic, common-sense, plain, vanilla legislation can’t pass because
