Calais — In his 20 years as a lorry driver, Sean Baker, a former soldier, thought he had seen it all. But nothing, he said, compares to the chaos in Calais at the moment. "Just this morning I was filling up my truck with fuel and two migrants jumped in," he said. "I shouted at them and they hopped out. It´s mayhem. It happens every hour. "I had one yesterday, from Sudan, who offered to give me €400 if I took him to England. I said: ´Are you mad?!´ and he then upped it to €600." Based in Dover and making

A British former Primark employee has died fighting with jihadists in Syria, according to reports. Muhammad Hamidur Rahman, who grew up in Portsmouth and had previously worked as a supervisor at the clothing chain, was killed fighting alongside Islamic State fighters late last month. The 25-year-old left the UK in October last year, telling relatives he was joining on a “convoy” to deliver aid. Rahman, of Bangladeshi origin, has said he was called by God to help Muslims being killed by President Bashar al-Assad and that he was reconciled to dying in Syria. His father Abdul Hannan, 56, said the family were informed of his death

The summer of 2014 has been one of the mildest on the books — and could be the first summer in a decade without a heatwave. “It wasn’t clear if it was going to be a hot or a cool summer,” said National Weather Service meteorologist David Stark. “We started out the year very cool and it seems like we just continued that. It doesn’t look like we have any heat waves in the near future.” Instead of searching for the skimpiest outfits to battle the sizzling sun, New Yorkers are reaching for their sweatshirts. “It’s been so much colder this summer,”

ISIS has routed Kurdish forces in their early engagements, mostly because they are better armed. (Snip) There are rumors that the CIA might be supplying the Kurds with small amounts of weaponry, but is the Obama administration finally willing to help arm the Kurds in a significant way? Perhaps not: "Pentagon officials say their policy hasn’t changed — they will only sell arms to Baghdad." My God, how lame is it possible for a human being to be? The peshmerga are a brave, competent fighting force. But they need modern weapons–and they are even willing to pay for them! Everyone

Congress must defund the worst

Although far from central to the ongoing Hamas-Israel hostilities, the United Nations has nonetheless inflicted substantial damage to its own reputation and credibility. So outrageously have several U.N. institutions behaved, before and during the current Gaza crisis, that the United States can no longer ignore or excuse it. Congress must act to defund U.N. bodies that perform unacceptably — thereby denying them the resources and the legitimacy of American support and putting other U.N. agencies on notice they could face a similar fate. Three U.N. agencies in particular have demonstrated serious, sustained bias against both Israel and the United States, starting

Enver Tohti was a surgeon in a hospital in Xinjiang, in the northwestern part of China, when, in June 1995, he was instructed by his superior to prepare for an adventure — surgery in the field. In the morning, when the doctor and his team arrived at their destination, he realized they were at “the Western Mountain Execution Grounds, which specialized in killing political dissidents.” “When you hear a gunshot, drive around the hill,” he was told. He asked why they were there. “You don’t want to know.” After the shot rang out, he drove where he was told, and saw “10, maybe 20, bodies lying at the base of the hill.”

We’re training the Taliban to kill

The assassination of an American general by a Taliban terrorist posing as an Afghan soldier exposes the lunacy of the administration’s Afghanistan strategy. Under pressure from President Obama, the military rushed to recruit local Afghans to stand up a national army and police ahead of his hasty year-end troop withdrawal. To process some 7,000 new recruits each month, corners were cut on background checks, allowing insurgents and terrorists to fill the ranks of the now-350,000-member security force. At the same time, the Pentagon allowed the Afghan government to take over and empty US prisons of Taliban and other terrorists as

CHILMARK -- To the infinity pool and beyond! When President Barack Obama arrives for his fifth summer vacation on Martha´s Vineyard today, he may just want to chill out for a bit at his swanky new rental. The Obamas will unwind at a nearly $12 million property that features a seven-bedroom house along Vineyard Sound. The home, on Gosnold´s Way, is in a more secluded spot than the South Road house the first family rented last year, a location that caused traffic headaches. This summer´s 8,100-square-foot rental home has sweeping views of the Elizabeth Islands, a combination basketball and tennis

Most public facts fall into the “maybe” category. Let’s review the maybes in three categories of recent headlines. 1. the conflict with Russia; 2. the situation in Iraq; 3. the transmissability of Ebola. The conventional wisdom is that ‘Putin is on the run’ and ‘Edward Snowden was a patriotic whistleblower’. Ed Epstein has recorded a YouTube video that might make you rethink the proposition that Snowden acted with good intentions. Epstein argues that the vast majority of documents Snowden stole pertained to US penetrations of Chinese and Russian systems. Only a very small portion of his take bore upon NSA

Before heading off to Operation Martha´s Vineyard, this morning, the president held a brief press conference on the White House lawn to discuss his decision to use air strikes against ISIS in Iraq. Asked if he was having second thoughts about the American withdrawal from Iraq in 2011, and if that gives him pause since the U.S. is doing the same thing in Afghanistan, Obama launched into his trademark doublespeak: “What I think is interesting is how often this keeps coming up as if it was my decision,” Obama answered. In his regular appearance on PBS’s “NewsHour” on Friday, New York Times columnist David Brooks weighed in on how the United States should handle the spread of ISIS in northern Iraq, particularly regarding the humanitarian crisis. Brooks argued against the Obama administration basing foreign policy on polling data because Americans are insulated from what’s going on around the world. “That’s why you can never run a foreign policy on the polls,” Brooks said. “The polls would have been against Hitler in 1933. That was clearly the wrong thing to do against doing anything against Hitler in the 1930s. The American

Port St. Lucie, Fla. - Cats have been disappearing in one Port St. Lucie neighborhood so when Sergeant John Holman was called to the 600 block of SE Faith Terrace Friday morning for a report of another deceased cat, he made a startling discovery. Hiding in some brush, Sgt. Holman spotted a 12-foot long 120-pound Burmese Python. Neighbors believe the large snake has been feasting on their felines. The Sergeant called for backup to help get the large predator from the brush. Cops say the snake belongs to a person who lives near by. No charges have been filed as of yet. Sacramento - Taxi drivers required to pass an English test to renew their permits in Sacramento say they’re being set up for failure. Part of a newly passed ordinance that recently went into effect requires drivers to know a certain level of English. The city says the requirement came from passenger complaints. “We received a number of complaints from passengers that they couldn’t communicate with the driver of where they need to go and what they needed,” said city revenue manager Brad Wasson. The tests, one written and one digital, are required for a driver to renew their permit. In the first week, 18 of the 28 drivers failed at least one portion.

When council members went to take the flag down, they were surprised to find, someone had beat them to it. “The council can confirm that following reports this morning of a flag erected on the

Political conservatives are the greatest threat to the nation, President Barack Obama suggested in a kid-glove interview with the New York Times. “The president mused, the biggest threat to America — the only force that can really weaken us — is us,” said the interviewer, Thomas Friedman. “Our politics are dysfunctional… societies don’t work if political factions take maximalist positions,” said Obama, who repeatedly claims to be a moderate stymied by the GOP’s supposed obstructionism and radicalism. “And the more diverse the country is, the less it can afford to take maximalist positions,” Obama added. Almost every day, it seems, brings a headline demonstrating how right 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was, and how wrong President Barack Obama was, on the critical issues facing America. In 2012, Romney warned that Obama’s failure to secure an agreement to keep a residual military force in Iraq would threaten the U.S. gains made at such a high cost in American lives and treasure. “America’s ability to influence events for the better in Iraq has been undermined by the abrupt withdrawal of our entire troop presence,” Romney asserted. The chaos in Iraq today supports Romney’s view. With no

When you size up Tom Hruby’s chances of securing a spot on the Northwestern football team, it would be fair to say the odds are stacked against him. He’s a junior trying to walk on as a defensive end — meaning he is competing against scholarship athletes aggressively pursued by the university. He’s 32, has a wife, three kids and a full-time job. Overwhelming odds? That’s the perfect scenario for Hruby because that’s how he makes his living. Hruby is an active Navy SEAL. “I don’t feel like where I’m at today is some outstanding or amazing thing,” Hruby told the Sun-Times. “It’s just more of a challenging route . . . the way I kind of

Forty thousand followers of the Yazidi faith are huddling, terrified, on the side of Mount Sinjar, fearing that their women are going to be raped, enslaved or killed. Nearly a quarter of Iraq’s Christians have been driven from their homes in the past week alone. In theory, the Islamic State gave them the choice of converting, paying a fine, or leaving. In practice, many were murdered before they could even make that horrendous choice: the militants have, in the words of Canon Andrew White, vicar of Baghdad, “chopped off heads, chopped children in half, hanged people on crosses. I saw "King Lear" in late July, an outdoor production in New York´s Central Park, and I thought about my mother—though it´s a play in which no one is a mother or even has a mother. For me, right now, "King Lear" is not—not yet—primarily a play about growing old and losing your powers, mental and physical, and your worldly authority. For me, in this stage of my life, it´s a play about taking care—or failing to take proper care—of an aging parent, about watching that aging parent lose the pieces of himself, and about the ways that grown-up and even middle-aged siblings replay their rivalries and relationships as they watch their
