ISIS Beating Iraqis and Kurds As One
Lacks ´Heart´ and the Other Ammo

The Islamic militia ISIS has been able to roll back both the Iraqi army and the Kurdish peshmerga force because one lacks the "heart" for a fight while the other lacks the firepower, according to Americans familiar with both forces. ISIS has easily swept the Iraqi army from Anbar province in the southwest of Iraq as well as much of northern Iraq and then blunted attempts by the Iraqi government to retake cities. The Kurdish peshmerga was expected to be a more formidable force, but they have also lost ground to ISIS, including the vital Mosul dam, in recent days.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest on Friday said the U.S. is prepared to “stand with the Yazidis and the Christians in Iraq that are being persecuted by ISIL.”Meanwhile, conservative media outlets quickly pointed out they’ve been standing with the Christians in Iraq the whole time. While much of the mainstream media was focused on violence in Gaza, conservative media outlets and commentators have been shining their spotlight on violence against Iraqi Christians and Yazidis since last month — well before President Barack Obama spoke of Yazidis and Christians on Thursday night.“I believe what is happening to the Christian community

British forces could join the Americans in bombarding militants in Iraq if the situation becomes significantly worse, it emerged last night. Officials did not rule out RAF air strikes if there is a real threat of genocide. It came as American warplanes pounded Islamic State artillery positions near Irbil, where US troops are stationed. Two F/A18 fighter jets were dispatched from the USS George H. W. Bush to unleash 500lb laser-guided bombs on a group of militants outside the northern city, which also houses an American consulate. The Pentagon said its warplanes hit Islamic State artillery positions which had been firing on Kurdish

Bill and Hillary Clinton are making the most of their downtime in the Hamptons. The former U.S. President and his ex-Secretary of State wife were pictured this morning enjoying a stroll on the beach in Amagansett, where they are paying $100,000 to rent an $18million five-bedroom property for three weeks. The couple, who were accompanied by their dogs as well as a Secret Service agent, were dressed in very casual clothes, with President Clinton decked out in black SoulCycle shorts and green sneakers and his wife in a bright blue muumuu and slippers. Mrs Clinton, 66, kept her eyes shaded

There have been Christians in Mosul for just shy of two millennia, since the first century. There are none today. The Yazidi are practitioners of Kurdistan´s oldest religion, fire-worshippers whose presence in the region predates Islam. They´re either being executed or starved to death on a mountain: We are being slaughtered. Our entire religion is being wiped off the face of the earth. ISIS are fast-track Nazis. No messing about with a few property restrictions and intermarriage laws as a little light warm-up: They´re only in the business of "final solutions", and they start on Day One and don´t quit until the last

President Barack Obama will embark on a previously planned two-week vacation to Martha´s Vineyard tomorrow regardless of the violence in Iraq and Gaza. Even as the first military airstrikes he authorized in northern Iraq were carried out Friday, Obama did not cancel the trip. (Snip)In 2009, Obama remained on vacation in his native of Hawaii after a man aboard a Detroit-bound flight tried to detonate a bomb on Christmas. Obama also continued on with Martha´s Vineyard vacations in 2010 as rebels in Libya were on the verge of ousting their government, and last year when Egypt´s military overthrew the country´s

On the last day of the US-Africa Leaders Summit, Michelle Obama, together with journalist Cokie Roberts and former first lady Laura Bush, attended a White House event to promote empowering women. It was during the conversation about girls and education that the first lady switched from the seriousness of racism to the levity of sexist jokes. Discussing with Mrs. Bush that countries that typically oppress women oftentimes struggle economically, Michelle shared that she felt that when it comes to speaking up for girls, first ladies “can’t waste [the] spotlight.” On behalf of both herself and Laura, Michelle pointed out that

True to its word for once, Hamas today resumed rocket attacks on Israel as soon as the cease fire was scheduled to expire. It was a smart play by the terrorist outfit. One senses that Hamas’ stranglehold on Gaza depends on securing Israel’s agreement to remove its blockade. Without this, Hamas has nothing to show for the devastation brought on by its latest war. In this sense, Hamas has little choice but to keep attacking Israel until Netanyahu shows a willingness to lift the blockade. But precisely because Hamas’ viability may depend on ending the blockade (and for other reasons as well),

One reason predictions of a Mitt Romney victory in 2012 were inaccurate, say analysts, is that the turnout among certain Democrat constituencies — in particular blacks and Hispanics -- was greater than expected. And what a significant factor this is! Whether we call it getting out the vote, having a great “ground game” or just turnout, it can make or break an election. But while the phrase “getting out the vote” is well understood, there is a lesser known election strategy: getting in the vote. What’s the difference? While the former involves getting as many as possible of the set number

WASHINGTON — On Wednesday evening, moments after finishing a summit meeting with African leaders at the State Department, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff delivered a stark message to President Obama as they rode back to the White House in Mr. Obama’s limousine. The Kurdish capital, Erbil, once an island of pro-American tranquillity, was in the path of rampaging Sunni militants, the chairman, Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, told the president. And to the west, the militants had trapped thousands of members of Iraqi minority groups on a barren mountaintop, with dwindling supplies, raising concerns about a potential genocide.

TEL AVIV — The Israeli song “Ein Li Eretz Acheret” is a curious tune. “I have no other country,” go the lyrics, “even if my land is on fire.” It’s hard to find a Jewish Israeli who doesn’t identify with it. Lefty Israelis interpret it as a protest song. It was sung at demonstrations against the 1982 Lebanon War and vigils following the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Israelis on the right interpret it as a patriotic song about attachment to the land; they sang it after terrorist attacks and during the 2005 withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. I was

Speaking at the U.S.-Africa Summit earlier this week, Secretary of State John Kerry had a bit of astonishing advice for African leaders. While noting that Africa faces a starvation problem, he also admonished its leaders not to create more farms. The reason? Adding more farms would contribute to “global warming.” Yeah, he really said that: “Certain agricultural processes can actually release carbon pollution and actually contribute to the problem in the first place. It’s a twisted circle. Always complicated. But we also know that there are certain ways to change that. For example, rather than convert natural areas to new farmland, a process

It has been a good couple of weeks for military veterans and their families, who may at long last see real reform at the Department of Veterans Affairs. As an advocate for veterans, I have been generous with my criticisms of the VA and demands for new leadership of the agency. Over the past several years the VA has devolved into a toxic cesspool of dysfunction and corruption devoted to protecting a cosseted class of bureaucrats rather than serving veterans. And as the department’s scandal snowballed, both Congress and President Obama failed to provide the needed oversight and leadership to right the

The ghosts of Benghazi are haunting the Obama administration as it attempts to gain the upper hand in the narrative concerning the swap of the American soldier, Bowe Bergdahl, for five of the worst of the worst Taliban terrorists who had been held at Guantanamo Bay. While the administration first thought they would benefit politically for “leaving no man behind,” when the reality of the deal became clear, the American public didn’t like it at all. Nor should they. The director for counterterrorism at the National Security Council, Army Col. Mark Mitchell, recently told The Washington Times that one of the

When America’s armed forces go into a fight, they deserve support. All the more so in the case of the air strikes President Obama authorized against the Islamic State in northern Iraq. Though he dismissed the al Qaeda offshoot as recently as January (“If a JV team puts on Lakers uniforms, that doesn’t make them Kobe Bryant,” he said) it has now declared a caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria, leaving a trail of beheadings in its wake. The president acted, he says, to secure Americans stationed in Iraq and to relieve the minorities — mostly trapped Yazidis — most immediately threatened

As evidence mounts of a looming taxpayer-funded bailout of health insurance companies under ObamaCare, the urgency grows for Congress to take this possibility off the table for good. As expected, ObamaCare´s costs are rising, and health insurers are passing them along to patients in the form of higher premiums and deductibles. Just this week, a majority of insurers offering health plans in Florida announced rate increases ranging from 11 to 23 percent. This means that if patients balk at paying this sharp increase and drop their coverage, these health insurers will have to make up the difference somehow. Enter section 1342 of the

Warren is riding a liberal surge among Democrats and prodding them in an even more liberal direction. We know where Republicans wound up. They’re the conservative party, all the more so as a result of Tea Party activism. We don’t know where

With regard to President Obama’s attempt last night to show moral leadership by announcing certain actions in Iraq — and while deliberately avoiding all other TV, radio, Internet, or print responses to Obama’s speech — these thoughts insistently push to the fore: Why, pray tell, are there so many thousands of beleaguered people without food or water on a mountaintop in Iraq right now, people who, Obama now says, need to be rescued by American efforts? Because Barack Obama diddled for at least two months longer than he should have before intervening to stop the advance of the pure, unadulterated evil that
