Good News for U.S. Capital Markets

After its last meeting at the end of July, the Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC) announced that it has “directed staff to undertake a more focused analysis of industry-wide products and activities” in the asset management industry. This has been interpreted as a step back from the FSOC´s earlier position that the financial distress of large asset managers — or at least the funds they manage — could have systemic effects on the U.S. financial system and thus warrant designation as systemically important financial institutions, or SIFIs. The Wall Street Journal reported that the FSOC had “agreed to revamp their

HOUSTON, Texas -- As Central American illegal immigrants continue to pour across the U.S.-Mexico border, federal agents are releasing tens of thousands of them onto U.S. soil. Consequently, public schools around the nation must gear up to accommodate undocumented children. In Texas alone, around 4,800 foreign minors have been set free--assuming these minors are not immediately deported, they will be expected to enter the public school system come fall. Many Texans have expressed concern over the cost these minors will force onto taxpayers. Due to language barriers, it will likely be more expensive to educate the immigrant children than it is

An Afghan military official says the gunman who killed U.S. Major General Harold Greene on August 5th was an Afghan soldier and that he shot Greene once in the leg and four times in the back. Greene was visiting Marshal Fahim National Defense University when the gunman allegedly "opened fire from a bathroom window in a nearby building." According to NBC News, the gunman "was identified as 27-year-old Mohammad Rafiqullah." "A senior Afghan official" said Rafiqullah had been in "the Afghan army two years and was assigned to the military police." The official also said "[Rafiqullah] had never shown any suspicious intentions before." NBC

The month of July saw a decrease in the number of apprehensions of unaccompanied minors and family units illegally crossing the southern border into the United States, according to new data released by the Department of Homeland Security. In July, 5,508 unaccompanied minors and 7,410 adults with children were apprehended in what DHS is describing as a “significant decrease.” By comparison, in June the government apprehended 10,628 unaccompanied minors and 16,330 adults with children illegally entering the U.S. through the southwest border. “While the decrease in apprehensions in July is good news and reflects a positive trend that we hope continues, the current

A new white paper from Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund puts a target on GOP operative Henry Barbour for his role in incendiary racial appeals in the Mississippi GOP Senate primary. “Henry Barbour was the field general in an unprecedented campaign to smear a fellow Republican, so desperate was his family to cling to power,” Jenny Beth Martin, the chair of TPPCF, said in the statement provided exclusively to Breitbart News. “We’re used to these tactics from Democrats: desperate appeals to emotion, fear-mongering, even playing the ‘Klan’ card. Who would have thought the Barbour machine would finance such despicable race-baiting?”

The brutal slaying of a U.S. Border Patrol agent by illegal aliens highlights the perils of the Obama administration’s de facto open borders policy that has transformed the nation’s southern boundary into a taxpayer-funded welcome center for desperately poor unskilled and low-skill workers, sick children, welfare mooches, and violent criminal gang members. This horrific crime happened not too far from the same border that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) sedately insisted was “secure.”

There are a lot of nice things that can be said about former President George W. Bush: He is a genuinely friendly person, he appears to care deeply about the well-being of injured U.S. soldiers and he is gracious, refraining from lashing out at even the harshest of his critics — no matter how unfair the criticism. But you cannot say that the man is popular. Lord knows he´s not popular. Look, it’s no secret that Bush left the White House in 2009 a deeply disliked person, his approval rating sinking to an all-time low of just 25 percent, according

WASHINGTON— After years of resisting the pull of more Mideast conflicts, President Barack Obama has sent the military back into action in Iraq, where he once accused his predecessor of waging a "dumb war." U.S. planes on Friday bombed Islamic militants who were towing artillery outside Irbil near U.S. personnel, the Pentagon said. The aggressive insurgency threatens to undermine Obama´s legacy as the commander in chief who ended a long and unpopular war in which nearly 4,500 American troops died. It also raises fresh questions about whether Obama´s desire to end the war clouded his assessment of the risks of

See a tree with 20 apples hanging on it and reasonable people conclude it´s an apple tree. So is it a criminal conspiracy when 20 government employees illegally destroy important official emails? If that seems like an extreme question, consider the steadily accumulating evidence about the Obama administration´s modus operandi with potentially incriminating documents subpoenaed by Congress: A scandal erupts. Congressional hearings are held. Documents are requested and withheld. Subpoenas are issued. Contempt charges threatened. A few documents dribble out. Then come the admissions that, oh by the way, emails required by multiple federal laws to be preserved have either

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is doing something unusual with his summer vacation on Martha´s Vineyard: He´ll come back to Washington midway through the getaway to attend White House meetings. It´s an odd move, especially since Obama and his aides for years have fended off questions about the timing of his vacations by arguing that he is president at all times and can do the job wherever he is. Obama planned to go ahead with the vacation even after the first of the military airstrikes he authorized in northern Iraq were carried out Friday. He is scheduled to arrive on the wealthy island

Minor news stories with only a local direct interest nonetheless can carry large general implications, and just such a recent item emerged last weekend: Residents of Toledo, Ohio were warned not to use city water supplies due to algae growth in Lake Erie. (After a few days, the water was declared safe to drink.) For those few days, unsurprisingly, the demand and market prices for bottled water increased sharply, and few politicians can resist such opportunities for demagoguery: “Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine is dispatching employees to the city to investigate complaints of price-gouging on bottled water.” “Price gouging” is

LITITZ, Pa.—This town of 9,400 people in Amish country tells the story of the modern concert industry. In 1968, when Frankie Valli and his group rolled in for a show, two young brothers who did sound for local dances turned the Four Seasons into one of the first music acts to tour with its own speaker system. The brothers built a reputation on the road, but they never moved out of Lititz. Their company became an anchor for a cluster of businesses that now supply the sound and spectacle for many of the world´s biggest acts. The effect that lets pop-star

Three years after US President Barack Obama turned his back on Iraq by ordering the withdrawal of American troops, he now finds himself having to order military intervention against an Iraqi foe that is infinitely more lethal than anything American forces encountered during their troubled campaign in the aftermath of Saddam Hussein´s overthrow. [Snip] I thought this was a pretty lame excuse at the time--Washington could easily have got a deal if it really wanted one--and now we are reaping the appalling consequences of that decision in the form of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis), which is

God bless America. Following the announcement last night by Barack Obama that the United States is about to resume military operations in Iraq, it appears the Yazidi will not now be killed with their families. There is also hope that Iraq’s other minorities may face some form of protection from their persecutors. It’s an announcement that won’t be welcomed by everyone. The old charges of US adventurism and imperialism will be trotted out. And with some historic justification. Iraq is after all the scene of the United States most catastrophic foreign policy misjudgement. “It’s not the job of the US to act

Few of President Obama´s initiatives are more emblematic of his early ambitions to be a transformational liberal leader than his vision for connecting the nation with a vast high-speed rail network. The dream of building a system of bullet trains in the United States akin to what exists in Europe involves massive and sustained government spending, more money for unions, and promises to move the nation away from car-based transportation. Thus, it represents everything that excites American liberals. Obama’s February 2009 economic stimulus package committed $8 billion to 79 projects spanning 31 states that were to lay the groundwork for “13 new,

This morning on New Day, Newt Gingrich came on to discuss Barack Obama‘s proposal to combat ISIS in Iraq — and, judging by his response, thinks that Obama isn’t recognizing that this is a problem of “radical Islam.” “Nobody wants to tell the truth,” he complained. “The truth is this is a radical Islamist group. They say openly if you don’t convert, we’ll kill you. It turns out they actually mean it. There’s no complexity…The president couldn’t even honestly describe ISIS last night because it goes against his ideology.” And, just to be clear, that ideology is that ISIS “has a very
