Hamas has chosen death:
Israel is trying to choose life

I welcome the much needed ceasefire in Gaza and pray that it will lead to a lasting, long-term resolution of a bitter and tragic conflict. [Snip] Within the last month alone, Hamas has fired over 3,000 missiles at population centres in Israel. In its deep-rooted desire to murder and cause maximum damage, Hamas does not distinguish between Jew, Muslim and Christian, so hell-bent is it on killing Israelis. Since Israel withdrew from Gaza nine years ago, Hamas has been diverting humanitarian funds donated by us, the international community, intended to assist and enhance quality of life for the people of

MYSTIC, Conn. - When the whaling ship Charles W. Morgan set sail for the first time, John Tyler was still in the White House. On Wednesday, 34 presidents later, America´s last whaling ship returned from its final voyage, and prepared for a new mission. "It´s the most historic sailing event in my lifetime," said Kip Files, who has served as the ship´s captain for the last three months. "No one alive had ever sailed her before...I haven´t digested it all yet." The Morgan first sailed in 1841. It was one of 2,700 American ships that brought back the whale oil

MOSCOW -- Edward Snowden´s lawyer says the NSA whistleblower has been granted permission to stay in Russia for three more years. Snowden last year was granted temporary asylum of one year in Russia, but that had run out on Aug. 1. His lawyer, Analtoly Kucherena, was quoted by Russian news agencies on Thursday as saying Snowden now has been granted residency for three more years.

In one gray box is a 1778 letter written by George Washington at Valley Forge. The flowing cursive wasn´t particularly eloquent, but showed the minutia he tackled during the Revolution. Washington asked the New York governor for help tracking down an American officer who had confiscated a money box from the British at Princeton, then apparently converted it "to his own use." In another box is a 1865 letter written by Abraham Lincoln to a woman who asked the president to send her a portion of his second inaugural address - in his own hand. "Fondly do we hope, fervently

The killing of U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Harold J. Greene in Afghanistan Monday hit home with terrible irony. It was just four years ago that the general was here with us, representing the Army he served, speaking at a podium in South Boston’s Medal of Honor Park, helping us rededicate our Vietnam memorial that honors our friends and neighbors who gave their lives for their nation in combat. Now, just four years later, he is among them. He came to honor South Boston’s 25 Vietnam war dead, and now we are compelled to honor him. Tom Lyons called me with the news of

Alison Lundergan Grimes may be doing everything she can to distance herself from President Obama, but the Kentucky Democrat is more than happy to associate with one former commander-in-chief. For the second time this year, Bill Clinton joined Grimes on the campaign trail and shared the stage with her during two appearances Wednesday in Kentucky: a morning fundraiser in Lexington and an afternoon rally in the hardscrabble coal-mining town of Hazard. Locked in a closely contested and expensive battle with Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in a state that Clinton carried twice, Grimes sought to present herself as a

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has met with US lawmakers in the hope that they can ring-fence his country from Palestinian accusations that it committed war crimes during the recent fighting. Israel has consistently maintained that its military strikes on Gaza, some of which have resulted in civilian deaths, have been in self-defence against rocket attacks from terrorist group Hamas. However, Palestinian officials are thought to be considering joining the International Criminal Court (ICC) in a bid to have Israel investigated. Netanyahu met with a delegation of US politicians--including Republican Steve Israel--to discuss ways of keeping the spotlight off its actions in

Thousands of Christians are reported to be fleeing after Islamic militants seized the minority´s biggest town in Iraq. The Islamic State (IS) group captured Qaraqosh in Nineveh province overnight after the withdrawal of Kurdish forces. [Snip] Kurdish forces, known as the Peshmerga, have been fighting the Sunni militants´ advance in the north for weeks. In a separate development, the United Nations says it has rescued some of the thousands of people trapped by IS militants in mountains near the town of Sinjar. Up to 50,000 members of the Yazidi religious minority fled there after IS overran Sinjar at the weekend.

There is this notion, one we hear more and more, that the Republican Party has to shed the social issues to seize the future. “Social issues are not the business of government!” says thoroughly modern millennial. It’s a seductive cry, one repeated this past Tuesday in an article about how some young libertarians dubbed the “Liberty Kids” are taking over the moribund Los Angeles GOP. Oh, wouldn’t the political landscape be simple if we could just boil things down to fiscal responsibility? But life is seldom simple.

You should have been defending these rights for us,” rancher Cliven Bundy´s son, Ammon, said in a statement addressed to Clark County Sheriff Doug

Remember when President Barack Obama boasted of lowering the debt by half? Or when, in 2008, Obama accused President George W. Bush of being “unpatriotic” for taking out a “credit card in the name of Bank of China.” Well, it appears that Obama has reached his self-defined “unpatriotic” zone himself. According to CNS News, the new debt increase from the Obama administration is more than all of the presidents from George Washington to Bill Clinton COMBINED: - The total federal debt of the U.S. government has now increased more than $7 trillion during Barack Obama’s tenure as president. - When

Has Vladimir Putin seen this photo of John Kerry yet? Has Benjamin Netanyahu? When they do, I think one of them will be laughing and the other — well, no, even Bibi will be cracking up when he sees Hamas’ best buddy wobbling on a bicycle on Nantucket last weekend. A girl’s bike. A girl’s pink bike. As usual with these annual summer photos on Nantucket, Kerry looks surprised that someone just walking along happens to have a cellphone camera. It’s happened to Liveshot how many times now, just on Nantucket, and he’s still astounded that it’s happened again. Apparently, he still believes it’s 1984,

Singhal is a former owner of a Subway franchise in Australia, and as he tells the story, he was punished by his corporate bosses after taking issue with the "six grams of fat or less" claim Subway puts on their menus and in advertising. Singhal, who had invested $350,000 into the Subway location, claims that a Subway leasing manager approached him about exchanging his space for a "new busier location." Instead, Singhal closed his old shop, but was left with nothing but a $350,000 loss and a lot of

Russian strategic nuclear bombers conducted at least 16 incursions into northwestern U.S. air defense identification zones over the past 10 days, an unusually sharp increase in aerial penetrations, according to U.S. defense officials. The numerous flight encounters by Tu-95 Russian Bear H bombers prompted the scrambling of U.S. jet fighters on several occasions, and come amid heightened U.S.-Russia tensions over Ukraine. Also, during one bomber incursion near Alaska, a Russian intelligence-gathering jet was detected along with the bombers. “Over the past week, NORAD has visually identified Russian aircraft operating in and around the U.S. air defense identification zones,” said Maj. In yet another uninspiring performance by our unengaged and unengaging president, this time a press conference at the end of a three-day U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C., Barack Obama discussed, among other things, the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas which, according to The One, “we” have achieved. It’s not entirely clear just how “we,” meaning the president, his feckless Secretary of State John Kerry, and his utterly incompetent foreign policy team (but at least they’re loyal — the most important characteristic for employees of any petty dictator), helped achieve anything other than the emboldening of Hamas, which led to the

In the lead-up to the 2012 midterm elections, all the talk was about the GOP taking control of the Senate. Then, as often happens with the Grand Old Party, they figured out a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Todd Akin happened. Then Richard Mourdock did. One-two punch. Flat on the mat 8, 9, 10. Done. Mr. Akin kicked things off in August by saying two words that have never been uttered side by side in the history of the English language: “legitimate rape.” No need to explain, Todd. Stick a fork in it, you’re done. Mr. Mourdock was cruising

Whether the current cease-fire holds or collapses, the facts are thus far incontrovertible: Hamas has lost a war it started, and Israel has won a war it didn’t want. Obi-Wan Kenobi may have told Darth Vader, “If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine,” but this is not “Star Wars.” This is the real world, circa 2014 — and in the real world, winners win when they win and losers lose when they lose. The Force doesn’t exist, and if it did, top Hamas terrorist Khaled Mashaal wouldn’t have it — not even the Dark

Whenever elections approach, there is always a flurry of concern among Democrats regarding the white working class. Despite a steady and gradual decline in its size over the last several decades, this group remains a substantial percentage of the electorate; even relatively small decreases in its support for Democrats can mean defeat to Republican opponents. On a national level, if white working class support falls even 1 or 2 percent below the 36 percent that Obama received from them in 2012, the party´s 2016 nominee will be in serious trouble. In this year’s election cycle, the discussion about white working

LONDON — Not long after stepping down as prime minister in 2007, Tony Blair had drinks at a hotel overlooking the River Thames with Paul Kagame, Rwanda’s president. Mr. Blair was planning a charity that would embed Western experts in finance and government in African state ministries, and he said he wanted to begin in Rwanda. “Tony Blair was pitching himself as a former leader who knew the challenges of government, and he was saying that he could help,” said David Himbara, an economist who at the time was a close aide to Mr. Kagame. In a lust for Latino votes and voters — and, oh yes, great compassion for the children of Central America, etc. — Obama seems poised to act unilaterally on immigration, granting a massive amnesty to illegal aliens while doing little or nothing about border security. In two words, this stinks. It stinks not because of the children, good or bad, justifiable or not, invading our border, or the nice or not so nice people currently here, or even the drug cartels, murderous as they are. Those are problems — in many cases bad problems. But they can be handled in a

A glance at the Associated Press’s write up of the latest AP-GfK poll, conducted July 24 – 28, leads the reader to believe there really isn’t that much to see there. Sure, the American public is incredibly dispirited, mistrustful of their elected leaders, and generally dissatisfied with the direction of the country; but you already knew that. One-third of respondents don’t even care who is in charge – they don’t believe it matters. Neither party “is trusted much to manage the federal government,” the AP write up reads. While there are some indications that the coming midterms are set to benefit Republicans,

Will the US Help the Kurds Fight Isis?

The latest string of victories by Islamic militants in Iraq raises an enormous and obvious question: What’s the U.S. doing to help the Kurds? This week, fighters from Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham, or ISIS, captured the town of Sinjar and, the next day, Mosul Dam, the biggest dam on the Tigris River. These victories offer two terrifying prospects, one for humanitarian reasons, the other for strategic reasons. Sinjar is home to several thousand members of the Yazidi sect, a religious minority with roots in Islam and Zoroastrianism. Islamist extremists, including those who make up the vanguard of ISIS, regard Yazidis

Since it is 100 years ago this week that Britain entered the first world war – and at the moment the world seems to be especially ridden with conflict – it’s an opportune moment to reflect on why human beings seem to be unable to stop fighting wars. In most cases wars are initiated by governments, not by populations. And, most of the time, they are the result of disputes over resources and land, or of a government’s desire to increase its influence and power. However, looking back over the history of warfare, what is most striking is how willing most
